If I were forced to take the political equivalent of the Pepsi challenge, I absolutely would not be able to determine each candidate’s “brand.” They all seem to clamor to agree with each other and then act as if the minor shades of gray differentiate themselves from the pack. “I hate the war!” “I hate the war too, but more than you!” “I hated the war before any of you!” Obama even specifically stated when asked if English should be the official language of the US that the question is meant to “divide” the candidates. That’s the whole point of these questions! Voters want to know who lines up the best with their personal ideology. By adding to the noise in the vast echo chamber, these presidential hopefuls are doing a disservice to the voters.
The only one who really distinguishes himself is Gravel. He almost seems like he’s… not a career politician. He decides what he really thinks and believes and then he says it! Based on his straight forward, no-nonsense way of speaking, I’d be interested in hearing what else he has to say. I hope they give him more time to stand up on his soapbox.
In a time where a record number of people are describing themselves as "indepenents," it should be in their best interest to do something other than just tow the party line.
