Before the announcement that two unknown writers were going to be published by Simon & Schuster as a result of winning the First Chapters contest, Gather officials were convinced it would get widespread media coverage.
Not me.
Sure, the initial contest announcement got crazy publicity. Six months later, nobody cared.
So I was surprised to get an advance call from the Associated Press. The reporter and I spoke 15 minutes. He told me the story would move Wednesday night.
To help, I sent Simon & Schuster’s publicists a few contacts from my newspaper days. Actually, I sent 38 contacts, but who’s counting? I also called AP bureaus in states I’d worked and contacted any paper that might be interested in a local angle, from the Erie Times-News, where I’d once been a paper boy, to my new hometown’s Knoxville News-Sentinel.
They all said they’d get back to me.
Well, I still had Greater Niagara Newspapers, where I’d been group editor.
They gave me to the intern.
The intern?
I knew what that meant. Over the years I’d given many people the intern. The managing editor knew this. Back when he was in college, he’d been the intern.
So much for the hype.
The kid was a little nervous but soon we were laughing and it reminded me that the only thing I missed about the news business was working with young writers.
Still, the next day I called a few afternoon papers to let them know I’d won before getting back to my day job. I even stopped checking my email for at least 10 minutes.
Then a friend from Montana congratulated me.
A stranger named Suzy asked me a personal question that really should have been blocked by our company’s spam filter.
Finally, this appeared from a friend in Brooklyn:
“I just read it in black and white in the Arts Section of the New York Times! YOU WON!! John asked me what I was screaming about and I told him ‘Terry won’ and he started screaming, too! CONGRATULATIONS!”
I may have screamed myself.
There we were, below Lindsay Lohan and above Maroon 5.
Soon Valerie Fox of Gather emailed that Forbes, the LA Times and the Boston Globe picked up the stories. Two 30-second segments on NBC affiliates in Portland and Bangor even mentioned that I’d been an editor in Maine.
And it just kept coming. Every time I’d do a Google news search, the list grew. The Deseret News in Salt Lake City. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Boston Herald. Papers across Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Even Reuters in India. I’ve actually lost track and so have friends who have been Googling as much as me.
In fact, I’ve been online and on the phone so much in the past week it’s now a blur. Still, I do remember one thing pretty clearly. My favorite story was written by Fionna Agomuoh. She’s working at the Union-Sun & Journal in Lockport, N.Y. She’s only 19 and she’s the intern.

I havent seen much in the news about this but I dont watch a lot of news. Considering this was the first First Chapters contest I dont think the hype has set in yet.
Maybe try a little self promotion....get hair extensions....die your hair blond and accidentially let your body parts fall out when getting out of a limo cause oops you forgot to wear underwear.
I don't even get the papers anymore because so much ink was spent on the sad, the evil, the scandals, and the exploits of the rich - that I lost interest.
I am a real person with real issues and a real shortage of time to accomplish my goals. I couldn't see wasting any of my time reading most of the papers/magazines... .
I am very happy that someone had the good sense to pick up this Gather success story about you and Geoffrey.
Maybe there is hope for them yet ;)
Diana
Isnt that what this whole thing was about? The best story.
Congratulations again Terry......t
Hey -- you may want to forward a link to the NYT article to any of the media contacts who didn't pick it up and localize it off the initial release. It just may give them a reason to sit up and take better notice.
Thanks for the update.

Paris Hilton is going to JAIL!?!!??!
Bwahhahaha!! Kidding.
Thanks for keeping us informed, Terry. Yanno, if I'd won, I wouldn't even have THOUGHT of contacting all of those papers. Very heads up of you. Well done. Guess I still have sooooo much more to learn, especially about self-promotion.
As has been said before: Enjoy the ride. You've earned it.
Cathy
Wonder if you'd have the time and inclination to keep us all informed about the process you'll go through before final publication..For example: editing effort by Simon; galleys; Cover; public relations/advertising; Any title changes; first printing count; real release schedule to book stores and any other stuff that your fans on Gather might have some interest in. There could be around 2600 wana be winners who will buy the book if you'll sustain their interest down your road to publication. Thanks...and again more well deserved congrats are sent your way.
Bill
I'm definitely going to keep posting. The problem right now is that I'm in the middle of a very accelerated editing process and I haven't had time. But I will!
Scary...but you're well on your way! You may want to practice saying your title in every other sentence you speak!!!
Keep up the good work; I'm hoping to ride along in your and Jeff's wind (until I can eventually speed by you that is).
;-)
Let me know if I can help you and when you're out west, make sure to let me know. I have a couple connections at local bookstores and would be happy to help try and set up a signing.
Terry, can we find her story on-line? Again, many congratulations and may you enjoy your moment in the sun!
Sonia, here's a link to Fionna's story:

I agree with you. It is a great article!
Thanks for taking the time to read my short story. I appreciate it even if you did refer to it as a bizarre little story. :o)
