What Every New Gather-er (and a Few Old Ones Too) Should Know About Gathering

June 03, 2007 04:36 AM EDT (Updated: April 08, 2008 07:41 AM EDT)

This article has been updated and republished to give more content and allow the newer Gatherer's a chance to see it.  Click here for the new version.

I have recently invited a few friends to Gather and felt the need, as I have many times, to mentor them on the ins and outs of being succesful on Gather.  I figured I should offer this same mentoring to all of Gather to share the knowlege I have gained in my eighteen months as a Gather member.  I joined in the Beta days when we earned points but had no idea what they would one day be worth or when we would be able to spend them.  I had a dream for awhile that the points would be worth a dollar a piece.  It was a sad wake up call to find out that would not be the case, but I loved Gather so much I knew I would never leave.

At the first glance of learning a point is worth 1.6 cents, you may think all the hullabaloo is not worth the payout, but that 1.6 cents can add up very quickly if you know what you are doing.  I have explained points further in my article: Gather Points Explained: How Can They Add Up?  Take a look at the information below showing how your points can add up:

1.6 cents/point

Points x .016 = $
3125 points a month = $50 a month
781.25 points a week = $50 a month
1099 points a week = $75 a month
1562.5 points a week = $100 a month
105 points a day = $50 a month
157 points a day = $75 a month
210 points a day = $100 a month

Now, as a cash earner I no longer see my points as points, but as the dollars they have added up to.  I can tell you since point spending began in May of 2006 I have never been below $50 for a month, and have earner over $200 a few times too.  So I really have felt the payoff of 1.6 cents a point.  I came for a contest, I have gained more than I could have ever imagined – friends, skills, recognition, a great place to show off my writing – and they want to pay me?  Many places giving all of these opportunities would be asking for your credit card at the sign in screen.  So, there are no complaints here!

Now, for some other resources to help you find the same or better success here on Gather.  Below are links to articles by me or other Gather members that will help you to publish good quality articles and images on Gather, and learn about the ins and outs of the site.  This is by all means not a complete list, and I welcome other successful Gather-ers to add comments with links and advice as well.  If you have a question or need help, drop me a line and I will do my best to assist or send you to someone who can assist.

How to increase your Gather points... by j r. - J R is a new to me Gatherer, but I just loved this article of hers and her sharing spirit.  If you are wondering how to get those points rolling in, she has a lot of great tips.

How to Format Your Comments - by Seth Williams - Seth is from before my time on Gather and is what I like to call a politically savvy dude and a technical Gather Guru.  This article took the site by storm when it came out and is responsible for possibly 90% of the members at the time learning how to use HTML code to their favor on the site.  It is on my top list of must have articles and is frequently revisited by me and many others.  If you want to look professional and stand out in comments, this is a must read article.  And Seth is a great guy to know too.  Ask him about his vinegar pie - it's his favorite.

Make Your Comments and Messages on Gather....Sexy! [or, an almost complete guide to using HTML on Gather] by Kevin ( just another member, like you! ) V. ♥² - Why Kevin V is "just another member, like you" is beyond me!  His knowledge of Gather and technical computer stuff, friendliness, and all around good guy capacity should have gotten him hired by Gather a long time ago.  There are some Gather mysteries we will never solve.  In this article, though, Kevin offers great advice on using HTML code on Gather.  It is a great addition to what Seth has offered and he is an awesome resource to go to if you ever have those "how do I . . > on Gather?" questions.  Thanks Kevin, for all you do for Gather.

Creating a Comment Link Cheat Sheet - Okay, so now you know how to format your comments using easy to learn HTML code.  Well, I needed it to be simpler, so I created a cheat sheet in a word document where I would copy and paste lots of codes to be copied and pasted into comments or private messages as needed.  I could not live without my Comment Link Cheat sheet.

How to Create a Hyperlink Within Your Article - Well, how about putting the handy dandy links in your articles?  I will be the first to tell you that a link will generate triple the traffic of as pasted url.  And it looks far more professional.  They can be subtly slipped in, sometimes without even saying exactly what it is, just to test your readers ability to control their curiosity.  Bhuwha ha ha ha ha ha ha!  Go ahead - click on it.  I dare you.  I double dog dare you!  Leave me a comment there to show just how ballsy you are. ;- P  Oh, and to learn how to put these handy dandy links in your article, go to How to Create a Hyperlink Within Your Article.

fileId:3096224744144451;size:inter;putting photos into your articles - a little bit of help by jessie voigts - Jessie is another one of my most favorite Gather-ers.  If you are wondering about the lower case use - she has a painful disability which makes typing difficult.  You would never know it by her content, other than noticing missing capitals.  Eh - who needs 'em!  She is one of the best bakers on Gather with her sweet daughter Lillie to help her out.  She also has written a great tutorial about inserting photos in your articles.  She is an expert at this - not the inserting part - but the photos part.  I just say, simply breathtaking.  I love her work and treasure her friendship.  And if you really want great looking articles, you need to know how to add photos.  A picture says a million words, and it also attracts readers when your article stands out in the lists with the photo showing in the synopsis.

Don't know what to publish?  There are three quizzes you can copy/paste/answer in your own article.  They are agreat way to have people get to know you, and a great way for you to get to know others. You can find them in the Getting to Know You group:

Getting To Know You Quiz One

Getting To Know You Quiz Two

Getting to Know You Quiz Three

What Do Pubs and Agents Want? An Author's View: This article, written by Patty Kelley, a nonfiction writer/author who has had traditional book deals and has worked with agents, tells aspiring writers about challenges that are new to the modern day author in the publishing industry.

There is a ton more great articles to help a new Gather-er (and a few old ones too) learn howto best utilize this great Gather site and have a wonderful Gather experience.  If you have advice or helpful links to offer, please post them below.  As I said at the top of this article, I love Gather.  With the right spirit and effort, you can too.  And you just might earn some extra cash in the process.  How great is that?

Also - a tip on Groups: Many people are annoyed by a huge list of off topic groups at the top of articles. So, I suggest you join only the groups you really like and definitely, above all post only on topic articles and images to groups. The reason I drop connections is almost always because they abuse the system and cause me as a group owner to spend too much time declining their work when I could be enjoying someone else's.

Also, group ownership is a GREAT way to bring in the points. To create quality groups, moderate content and feature the great content from the group in your feature section frequently. Let the member know their article is featured - use a link to the group in a comment on the article saying something like: This article is being featured on The Write Connections homepage. Thanks for posting great content!

To feature group content, you must be in the articles section of your group. You will see a link that says content settings - by clicking this link (located after the date of the article) you will come to a screen which allows you to check to either featurethe article or remove the article from the group. You can also un-feature an article through this same link.

Thanks, Monica. This article certainly deserves a place on my bookmark list.
I seem to get a small fraction of the points you talk about. Obviously you are much more popular.
Then again: Living in Europe, those points don't do a lot for me anyway. So I can proudly claim that I am here just for the fun, the learning and the networking.
Cheers
Hajo

Thanx. I am a newbie here at Gather and I think that this will be greatly helpful.

You said that points are worth $. If thats so, how we can we redeem them? I am unemployed for the present, so $100 a month will mean the difference between beans and steak for dinner. ROTFLOL! (My doctor won't let me eat either one) Are they like the supermarket "green stamps" of the fifties, where you had to go to a dingy storefront in a god-forsaken part of town to redeem them?

Seriously, a great article!

Thanks for the info - and for those interested - I am thinking about doing an economic analysis of gathering - namely - how much time does it take spent on Gather to actually earn those points. My hypothesis is that you earn far less by an order of magnitude than the minimum wage. So what I want to capture is the non-monetary value that you all are theoretically gaining by gathering. For instance - if you spend 8 hours per on Gather, and earn 400/day points, then for 160 hours of gathering, you have earned $200, which works out to $1.25 per hour. This of course assumes that in the 8 hours per day you spend gathering, you are consistently spending your time doing gather points-earning activities. To be "rational" in the economic theory sense, you need to be gaining at least the difference between $1.25 and the minimum wage - otherwise you would get a job at Starbucks. It's probably best to think of gather points as a little bonus, not a wage-earning mechanism. Thought of another way - it takes about 16 hours to earn enough points to buy $20 book. He could do the same working for less than 3 hours at McDonalds @ 6.25/hour.

thanks for all this wonderful information. I am glad that I was able to profit from Gather by having fun. Where else can you socialize, learn new things and express yourself and get paid to do it. To me, it is wonderful. I agree with what you're saying Will but I can't work at McDonald's without getting there or wearing decent clothes - plus I'd probably have to comb my hair - this way I can be beautiful always - lol...tell your mama I said hello. Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. I cannot address each of you individually, but I did want to say to Will Evans, you would be surprised at how much you can earn when you build up "real estate: on Gather -great groups and content that is revisited over time. I have had months when I was barely on gatehr at all and still earned over $50 for the month - so in those cases, I probably earned about $10 per hour of time on the site for that month. There are months when all I do on Gather is make sure my moderated group articles get approved or declined, because my life gets too busy to Gather. So, I would say for me, most of my Gather earnings come not from time on the site, but by what I have built up here.

This would make a great introduction to a college course in "Gatherization" -- if only my economics courses had been this interesting! I guess it's like anything in life -- the more time and effort you spend on it, the more it pays off! I think I just lack the discipline to delete or unsubscribe from a lot of other e-mail that unnecessarily detains me -- that probably holds me back somewhat. I like the way you laid out all the different point sums and goals. I think if you develop a sense of the "zeitgeist" or what people are interested in, you can score more points by tapping into that vein. So you might want to take a look at which of your articles was most popular, then take it from there. Thanks for this great article -- live long and prosper!

ho9wever, may it be remembered that there is no way to assess the points that you "earn" and some folks stay at a perpetual standstill regardlesss of what they do

and some folks are systematically harassed and attacked and their articles and images downranked so that they never receive the credit they deserve

and many folks might get points, but the points are wprthless because they do not live in the US.

and after a while, it gets very tedious to watch all the games and garbage on Gather earning tons of points, but people who contribute good content and photographs get trashed.

and then there are all those who earn tons of points by cutnpaste plagiarism and those who contribute contentless drivel that is always on the front page--

and that's Gather.

the more one-liners and junk you contribute that has little value, the more you earn.

so why not just go about stamping "thanks for sharing" on 40-50pages a day. It actually gets more in rewards than anything I put up that takes hours and hours of preparation

and I get little recognition, virtually no points and no reimbursement for the points or for the beautiful photography I post.

It's a very bad joke.

Thanks Monica. I can really use this information. I joined a while back, but just recently started contributing to the site, and it is nice to know that I can earn points, etc. and how to go about doing that. Thanks for all the wonderful tips.

I am also on the cash program and I have the feeling that I am earning less than what I would have earned in the points program. I wish I had not converted, because I cannot go back.

Selene - I was told you have a one time chance to back out to points again, but then can never go back to cash. SO, if you really want to change, send a message to earnings@gather.com. They will tell you more.

Though I think this is great article and you deserve a ten for it, I am not sure why anyone would spend all their free time hanging out a website all day. I think its great for aspiring writers, but for the rest you would be better off, getting out of the house and enjoying what life has to offer. Imagine what your missing hanging on a computer for hours at a time.

Michelle - FYI - I have a life outside of Gather 9you may not have been referring to me per say). I may occasionally spend a few hours at one sitting here, but generally it is a little here and a little there. Many members also come play on Gather while at work, in-between their duties (and occasionally I am sure instead of their duties, lol). I know of some who are agoraphobic and Gather is their connection to the real world. There are a lot worse things a person could do than spend hours on Gather. But, to your point - there are people here that are literally addicted to Gather - they know they spend way too much time and effort here, but cannot control themselves. I came to that brink once and was able to pull away. I have not let Gather be that controlling of me since and I am better for it. We do need lives outside of Gather.

Everyone - thank you for your kind comments!

Thanks Monica, for this help. In just one day, I have used these aids several times, and not for points either. Does the rating system affect the points at all? How do you get points? Could you explain these things to me?

I've always gotten gift cards.

If you elect to use the payout instead, do your points carry over to the next month if you don't cash out, or have not accrued enough yet?

I'm new here. It's been rather fun trying to figure things out on my own. I'm not serious about much of anything as far as writing goes. It's just an outlet. I love my photography and this is a great place to share a lot of it and get nice feedback.

It was incredibly gracious of you to put all your time and effort into putting this valuable information here for others. Thank You!

Stan - the point earning calculation is pretty sophisticated (laughing at myself in my tiredness almost spelled if suffisticated - too funny). They have not said specifically how many points for what and they really don't want people figuring the calc out - that leads to abuse of the system - not that people don't try. I will say from my experience is it really about building up what I call Gather real estate - content that creates an environment people want to come to and spend time on. They would use the word quality content, but as many of us know it is really about quantity conten - NOT that you must post a lot, but you must bring a lot of clickers to the site - people to read your stuff. You get content for advertising Gather outside of Gather - if they notice you have info in your e-mail signature line or you get listed for an article on about.com or some other search engine . . . You also get points for being a positive part of the communityy- it is all about how you bring value to the site. How they do this, I don't know Is there someone who looks at everything each member does personally to add points here and there - no. I am not sure how this is all done and this is just what I have "Gathered" as a long time member - reading staff articles about the subject and pure experience with the system - all guesswork at best but maybe this helps you a bit more.

Dawne Joy - Once you have earned at the $50 in one month level, you would have the option to become a cash earner. You see your points as dollars instead of points but you still only cash out when you want to - so you can wait til you have $3000 if you wanted to. You can cash out as many times per month as you want or only do it once every five years - they don't care. If you earn less than $50 in a given month after being a cash earner you still have it in your account as cash = you do not revert to points nor do you lose anything.

I hope this helps!

Andrea - I have a folder in my AOL Explorer Favorites dedicated to Gather with subcategories for groups, articles by topics, and people. It makes it easy to find what I want to find on Gather. It is not hard to do and can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. I hope you find that tip helpful!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments!
