A Movie Review, Because I Said So 2007

Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore star in this cute comedy about the love between a grown daughter and her mother. I paid heed to the PG-13 rating on the back of the DVD cover, and rented it to watch with my thirteen year old daughter. I felt that the sexual content in the movie was not intended for children as young as 13, and admit it was fairly uncomfortable to watch with my girl. Certain things came about in the movie that I was not expecting to have to talk to my daughter about on a Friday night. Other than that, the movie was cute yet predictable. My daughter and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Good rental, but I am glad I saved the big money and did not see it in the theater.

Keaton stars as Daphne Wilder, a mother whose love knows no bounds or boundaries. She is the proud mom of three daughters: stable psychologist Maggie (Lauren Graham), sexy and irreverent Mae (Piper Perabo) and insecure, adorable Milly (Mandy Moore) - who, when it comes to men, is like psychotic flypaper. In order to prevent her youngest from making the same mistakes she did, Daphne decides to set Milly up with the perfect man. Little does Milly know, however, that her mom placed an ad in the online personals to find him. Comic mayhem unfolds as Daphne continues to do the wrong thing for the right reasons...all in the name of love. In a hilarious battle of strong wills, the mother-daughter dynamic is tested in all its fierce, wacky complexity. The girls help Daphne finally discover the truths and impossibilities of motherly love, all while trying to answer the questions: where does it begin and where should it end?

Like you I'm glad this was a rental and not a big screen big dollar purchase! Although it was good, it seemed like the talents of Mandy Moore and Diane Keaton were wasted throughout much of the film!

I also rented this and watched with my husband. My sister loves the movie but I was somewhat disappointed. Mandy Moore's character seemed a little promiscuous to me and I really didn't find that part of the movie all that necessary. I think I'll stick with movies like You've Got Mail and While You Were Sleeping.

I really like Mandy Moore. I had a hard time with this movie because of her character's promiscuity. Frankly, my 22 year old daughter was surprised that Mandy took the part. However, it was otherwise an enjoyable film. I didn't care for the gratuitous "I have a penis, you have a vagina" comment that seemed to have been pulled right out of Kindergarten Cop, and a lot of things in could have been done better, but the chemistry between the characters, and the chemistry with the whole food and polka dots sub themes, worked well for me.
