The light of her inner girl blinded him. Jason Prine had never met anyone like Lucy Boston in his life. Lucy had a way of affecting all the boys, but Jason was struck in a way that was so distracting, he walked into the metal divider between the double doors as he entered his classroom’s corridor. This spectacle caught the attention of quite a few of the kids mulling about between periods. Loften High was a lively place at almost any hour of the day. Today, to Jason, it seemed as though the entire school body was congregated in this corridor – even though just moments ago, there appeared to be only himself and Lucy in the entire school. Such can be the effect of an encounter as he had that day.
Jason now sat in his last class before lunch. His mind was faraway and not so long ago, retooling the details in his memory of his first sight of Lucy. Lucy, the liquid look in her lively eyes; the warm way she paused and looked right at him, before continuing on with her clutch of girlfriends – laughing and looking. Looking his way after they had passed each other, and, yes, it surely was true she smiled and even winked at him. Yes, he is sure she did! Anyway, a boy is entitled to fantasize a bit. After all, he was certain that she, as well as every student on campus, did look at him after he collided with the door divider. When the teacher was suddenly standing over him, Jason snapped back to real-time, with more embarrassment to now contend with. All in all, running into Lucy (or actually the doorway) did not bring about any immediate rewards, and yet, the powdery euphoric feeling in his brain overrode the rest of the grief, leaving Jason happy.
Life at A. Percy Loften was generally an easy to enjoy experience. Jason was a sophomore and enjoyed not being one of the lowly freshmen this year. The girls Lucy was hanging out with seemed to be older than him, but he wasn’t so sure about Lucy. Jason couldn’t remember too much about her beyond the power she seemed to radiate. Whatever the source of her radiance, Jason just knew that he had to find her again… and soon!
Meanwhile, Jason had a ton of things he needed to get working on and he really couldn’t let himself stay occupied with thoughts of Lucy all day. There was the big game this weekend. The band would be spotlighted during half time because some members from the State University Marching Band were going to join the Loften High squad during Homecoming. Now that was important! But Lucy Boston…what was up with that girl?!
