$4.00 per gallon?!

I got this from moveon.org. This is a petition that would stop oil companies from stealing consumer's money simply to make a ridiculously high profit. I definitely cannot afford to drive much under such circumstances, and I won't let the oil companies steal my money either.

 

Hi,

Can you face another summer where a day trip to the lake or the beach costs you an arm and a leg? It's shaping up to be just that if we don't ask Congress to stand up to Big Oil now.

But theres a bill in the House this week that could make gas price gouging a federal crime, so we don't pay more while the oil companies rake in record profits. I signed a petition to urge my representative to pass this bill this week -- can you join me at the link below?

I'll be signing this. Personally, I am purchasing a car soon, and I'd like to enjoy my new freedom instead of tearing my hair out over the cost of just getting to work! I think we should just give OPEC the bird and buy electric cars (or better).

thanks.. gas prices are getting rediculous.. it costs more to go out boating now than it does to walk to the movie theater... it is outrageous.

your right oil companies shouldn't make extreme profits off of us, but let's face it the price of gasoline is only going to keep going up. it's called supply and demand. the supply of oil is diminishing and the demand for it at the very least is staying the same. thanks for the info about the petition though.

Thanks for this link! I signed it. My husband just got gas this morning and put $50 in the tank and it was only about 3/4 full!!! That's ridiculous! Gas prices here are about $3.50 a gallon for the cheap stuff at a no-name gas station. If you go to like Chevron, Shell,etc...add about 25-40 cents to that.

Maybe we should have another couple of days of not buying gas, it seemed to lower the gas price for almost a week here! But then again we went from $2.86 to $3.19 yesterday
I would love to know how it jumps 33 cents in ONE day!?

That's true Heidi. But it still won't justify them stealing our money. They take advantages of such situations. The supply and demand situation is true, but they use it as an excuse to push the prices very high

Thanks for the post! I fear that gas prices are just going to continue to climb. It is scary! It makes it very difficult for the average household to fork over the extra money at the pump! I know I've personally scaled back on my own driving.

Thanks Sigriet, I signed too. Wow, Picture This, I've been complaining all day about the $.18 jump we had here yesterday, but yours is almost double that! This is getting so far out of hand. At the current prices, I'm spending around $70 on gas each week just to get to work...and that's if I work at home one or two days to cut down on costs!

I think it's about time!!! My son makes a little over minimum wage and has to commute 50 miles one way to work!!! This is the scenario for most people here...
there is no public transportation here, so soon it'll be whether you can afford to go to work????

Gas was 3.09 this morning and 3.49 by this afternoon. I ABSLOUTELY don't believe that there is any reason for it other than greed. The gas was already in the tanks at the station and is paid for so, I don't buy that it needed to go up that much (convienietly right before a holiday weekend).

I agree it's major consumer issue but price gouging is not the real problem. Refinery capacity for gasoline is and that takes a while to fix, further aggravated by "not in my back yard" issues.
In a tight supply situation, a little extra demand, like long summer weekends, really pushes prices up fast.

I agree with Susan completely!! It is all about GREED. And because "Big Oil" is run by PEOPLE, and those people have friends in high places, I don't really expect this petition, our boycott, or anything else we do, to have any impact on the price of gas.
Some mornings, I feel that they just spin a big wheel somewhere to decide how high to raise the price! Five cents??? Twenty?? Thirtynine cents??
I would like to believe there was a logical reason behind the price, but as we all know, there isn't one. Except that the Heads of the oil companies don't seem to be satisfied wiith their millions. They want to see the rest of us grovel!!

I signed it also - nice to see our young adults are as concerned as we older ones are...I heard it is a tight supply situation, I have heard its Iraq, and Iran and the Middle Easts fault, I even heard someone today remark our refineries are in need of repair and updating...well excuse me folks, but what the "HdoubleLL" have they been doing with the record tax breaks, and windfall profits they have been getting the last few years...???????????? How is it we can regulate the energy electric business's but cannot regulate the oil business....???????????

Kewl thanks, yeah we need to do something about this, i drive almost 50 miles a day to and from work and that doesnt leave me with much money to go do fun things like drive to the beach, now Hurricane season is comming for us and its only going to make it worse with this mandatory generator law these gas stations have to have by June 1st, its freakin crazy

I thought price gouging was already illegal? A big part of the rising price of gas is a lack of refineries. The EPA makes it almost impossible to build one "according to standards" and the ones in operation now are old and not up to par, either.
If you're going to blame someone, blame the environmental extremists.
I'm not saying oil companies don't make a good profit, all big businesses do, but all of your gas money is not going into their pockets.

I'd have to see where you are getting your sources from Pat. You do make a good point, it might be the EPA making it hard to make refinieries. But hey, who wants oil drilling and contaminated water, dead animals, all for our greed for oil. If anything, there needs to be change. We need to stop our reliance on oil. It will never stop, we use petroleum for so many things other than fuel for cars. But if we can rely less on oil and more on otehr alternatives which aren't so environmentally and wallet-wise devastating, then there woudl be no need for higher oil prices, need to drill and destroy our precious environmental resources.

We have the smallest Hyundai on the market. It has excellent mileage and it cost us $13.50 just to drive from Cape Canaveral to Daytona ... a 2-hour round trip, all highway driving. Prices here jumped 7 cents yesterday.

Sigriet: What's wrong with you and the above people! Much of that gas money is returned via taxes to our government. I find nothing wrong with that; and for instance, our wonderful President Bush has many investments in oil, so their is a tiny, tiny, tiny chance that every time you fill up your tank, you at the same times are adding just a few cents into our Presidents wallet..(I admit I might be wrong on that, am I?) I love my country....Now that you know this...Don't you really want it to go up to one hundred dollars a gallon? In a way....It's like buying war bonds!

I've already signed...I paid $3.12 yesterday in Kendall.On Miami Beach I saw a station selling gas for 3.69.........it wont be long before it is 4.00 I'm already worried about how much it will cost to fill our gasoline cans for our generator should a hurricane come our way....
