Someone that I am very close to found out that he has prostate cancer today. :o( Looks like it's at stage 2. His docotor wants to do surgery and remove the entire prostate.
My friend will be researching this cancer and getting a second opinion, but if anyone has any info they would like to share with me....I'll pass it on to him.

So whatever you do don't lose hope! Fortunately this is a part of the body that one can survive without.
Scribbling you both on the prayer list
Thanks Matt. Yes, it does seem like SO MANY are touched by some type of cancer. It's awful. :o(
Nicole~Thanks sharing info about your dad....I will pass this along to my friend. I know he's a bit freaked right now and all the "good news" I can give him will help... I'm sure. Also, thanks for your prayers.
Thanks so much for your prayers Bob.
Thanks Iris. So glad to hear that your sis is okay now.
Sandra~Thank you.
I talked about Gary in "The Air Cavalry" about us picking up a hitchhiker in Colorado.
Gary's cancer returned with a vengance early this year and he died at home last Saturday, 5-12-07 in Riverton Wyoming. I feel for your friend and for Gary's wife of 34 years, Kandace. I also hope your friend's treatment goes well and that he recovers.
Thanks for bringing up a subject most men are queasy about. A good friend of mine died of it years ago. There's no excuse; men, go and get an annual prostate exam!
He was fine for a while but it spread. He passed away Oct 2005,he lived 9 years after finding out. There are different treatments but I think it depends on what stage he is in. I will be praying for him
He lived well into his latter 80s and it was his heart not cancer that took him.
Blessings

(Even my cat is a cancer survivor.)
I started out my nursing career as a Urology nurse back in the '80s and even then stage two prostate cancer had a fairly positive diagnosis. The surgical procedure has been streamlined and doesn't involve as much of the surrounding anatomy as it used to. My room-mate's current BF has just come out of his first full year post treatment for the same thing and is living a full productive life and is still sexually active (he's 56 or so). In the old days the more radical surgical treatments left the victim's impotent.
Web MD is a good resource for information as well as the NIH National Library of Medicine website at :
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/medlineplus.html
the lead article on their homepage this week is about prostate cancer. This site will give you links to hundreds of different articles and support groups for you both to check out.
I hope this is able to help him make his decision and wish you both luck in the coming battle.
Update: My friend had his surgery about 3 weeks ago. It looks like they got all the cancer so there will be no treatment for now. He'll be going in for regular blood work so that if it returns...they can catch in early.
Thanks again for all the awesome replies! *group hug*
