Presidential Dollars: Errors Or Not?
Our new Presidential Dollars have been on the street in circulation ow for a few months. As usual there have been anomalies, errors & other off-marks created. There have also been some normal anomalistic acts that are not considered to be errors or other value-adding anomalies.
In proof grade coins the edge imprint of the date , mint mark & motto will be face-side up. In circulation coins they can be reverse-side up without being value-adding anomalies. According to the U. S. Mint approximately 45%-55% of the coins will have the imprint face-side up or down as the case may be. Coins without the imprint at all are also being found commonly as well. These are anomalies but not worth the high bucks that the unscrupulous dealers on E-Bay are asking in ranges up to $100+. They have a value of $5 to $10 but no higher. These are mint-production “skips” that happen because one or more coins are stacked on top of others and only the bottom coin gets imprinted. These skips account for 20%-25% of the new dollars coins being minted.
Imprinted coins without the faces being imprinted have also been found & these are of great value as are a very “double strike” coins also being found. As far as the mint can tell only 8 of these coins have been minted so far.
Collectors should inspect the coins that they buy. Open rolls, inspect each coin & then seal the individual coins into 2x2’s or other mounting devices to preserve them. Be watchful for anomalies, get opinions, (note that I said opinions, plural) of the anomalies & if the anomaly seems genuine send the coin into NGCS, or ANC to be certified & verified.
