My dear sweet husband procrastinated like he usually did and did not make a reservation for our Mother's Day Dinner today. Other years we've gone with my Mom and Dad and since she's been gone the last 2 Mother's Days my Dad has taken us somewhere. Well, this year, my dad is overseas, actually in Singapore on a missions teaching trip so it was totally up to the dh.
First of all I have to say that the best part of this morning was a letter my son gave me that said: ‘You are
1. kind
2. beautiful
3. sweet
4. fun
5. the best teacher (we homeschool)
6. number 1 Mom
7. good ideas
8. smart
9. cool
10. wonderful.'
That made everything else that happened today ‘all better.' What a sweetie my little (or I guess not so little - he's 10) guy is!
On the way to church this morning my husband let me know he hadn't made a reservation anywhere even though he's known for 2 weeks that was his responsibility for today. He said he's been too ‘distracted.'
So, another Mothers day down the tubes right? LOL
Actually, funny thing is we all thought Mother's Day was last Sunday (don't ask, I have no idea how we got that mixed up on the dates) and my son got me a great present he picked out himself for me. It was a gift certificate to Build a Bear to make my own Hello Kitty doll. Only my son would notice how much I admired them when we were in there to check out the place last year and he knows how much of a Hello Kitty fan I am.
The next part was Friday night, we went to see a Springfield Cardinals game (the STL Cardinals' AA team) and they handed out a carnation to all the mothers and said Happy Mother's Day.
Back to today.
My son got me a wonderful card and gave me a garden rock with my name FAITH on it. It will look wonderful next to the ones he has made at art fairs in the past few years.
After we got home from church my dh called around and was able to make a reservation at the Outback for this afternoon. I was reluctant to go back there because we'd had poor customer service on our Valentine's Day dinner which we did on 2-15 this year. I'd commented about that on their website and actually got a call from the local manager who talked to me at length and even said he'd send me a gift card to get a free meal in hopes I'd have a better experience. Then, he never bothered to send it. That was really upsetting, it would have been better if he'd never said he was going to.
Our reservation today was for 2:30pm so we were eating later than usual. We had one of the same problems as before, no silverware until we flagged someone down and asked for it. I don't understand why that is a problem at the Outback unless it is Aussie tradition to only eat with your hands.
I don't know.
We started out with the Bloomin' Onion (similar to the one at Chili's but a little spicier) as an appetizer since it was a special occasion.
The dh and I shared the 9 oz. Victoria center cut filet with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. This is a more expensive steak, $19.99 but it is one of the best I've ever eaten in my life for taste and tenderness. The 9 oz portion gives my husband and I more than enough to eat for our dinner (especially when we have an appetizer) and we get better steak quality for what ends up being less money than what we'd pay for 2 cheaper steaks. My son ordered the Joey sirloin which cost a little more than most kid meals (they did have cheaper items) but he got steak which he likes and isn't offered for kids at a most other places we've ever been to.
The good thing that happened there that I wanted to share is this: I am a diabetic and because our reservation was so late and I waited so long for food my blood sugar dropped to 55 (I checked it) in the middle of my meal. My husband called over a waiter named Chip and we explained the problem and asked for some juice. He hesitated, and stated he didn't think they had any but that he'd check in the bar. Well, he came back in a few minutes with orange juice in a mug over ice and said that there was no juice at all in the restaurant but they'd hand squeezed some oranges so I could have the juice.
I am just so amazed that they'd go to this much trouble at this Outback. I'm sure it wouldn't happen anywhere else and I'd have ended up having to eat straight sugar from the sugar packets (which would have been yucky to have to do).
Thank you to Outback and Chip for helping a diabetic get over an unexpected low when I needed help.
Oh and thanks for the lovely carnation they gave to all the moms today!

the oj did the trick. My problem was I was up most of the night fighting lows (had a 46) because we walked at the mall and shopped at Target and all that extra exercise threw me for a loop!
I'm pretty wasted today with little sleep and blood sugars that can't decide what to do.
Good for you at being able to control your type 2 with diet and exercise.
I'm a type one with a pump, I never had the option to control without insulin.
I'm glad you get to enjoy Outback once in a while anyway.
thanks for the comment! Should I say that is a deep subject? LOL
Not sure what to think of well, well but I'm thankful for a comment from you.
it was nice, the whole day turned out surprisingly wonderful after its yucko start.
Oh I forgot to mention, we all talked about fav memories of our mothers and even what our parents had said about their mothers. I love doing that. Then Z said, I want to talk about my mother too! and said what he loves about me.
It was sweet.
nice to see you here. 55 as a high goal? My goodness girl it's been years since I thought of that. I had a time in the eighties when I was 15 or 27 too much of the time.
Yes, I have done glucose, those awful chalky pills. I haven't done the liquid because of how expensive they are. I did have some candy in my purse but didn't think of it at the time. I did some experiments and the candy raised my blood sugar just as fast as the chalky pills so I do that instead.
and thanks for saying it was a nice day.
It really did turn out to be, even with the low.
thanks :)
felt good.
