Nonfiction....

I went to a workshop today that made me think about nonfiction reading. The basis of the workshop was that if we used more nonfiction in teaching, we would better prepare children for some real life situations as most REAL LIFE things are nonfiction. One of the questions they asked was what percent of nonfiction we read each year including newspapers,leisure reading, Internet, etccc? Also, what the last nonfiction BOOK we actually read was titled? There were other questions too, but those were two that made me realize they might be onto something. I tend to lean toward fiction writing except for the news, etc....What about you? What are your thoughts on nonfiction materials in and out of a classroom?

It all depends on my mood, whether I am interested in reading fiction or nonfiction. I don't believe there is any wrong or right opinion on what we should be reading or how much of either...and as for children ~ they just need to read, read, read!

Memoirs are my most absolute favorite reads. I especially enjoy memoirs on addiction recovery as I find them quite helpful to me. I also read a lot of true crime. I am most definitely an avid reader of non-fiction. Oh and did I mention the more disturbing the topic the better? Currently I am reading Driving with Dead People. I picked it on the title alone. I'll let you know how it goes.

I read about 75 percent nonfiction/25 percent fiction. I think truth is, really, stranger than fiction.

In the classroom I believe children should get a healthy balance of both. Personally I love a good fiction book but I have been reading more non-fiction thanks to Gather. :D

I enjoy both non fiction as well as fiction books. Growing up I read the same. I think as long as it interests the child it is good. They just need to read.
