Hello to all,
The final section of my recent urban hike up Market St. Had my daypack, camera, digital voice recorder (my memory these days) and moved my feet up the sidewalk.
Urban hiking is a great way to learn your town, village, burg, or city and to get some exercise and fun. With the pictures you take you can amaze us on Gather by posting them on Urban Hike the World.
This is #12 for me. I've gone on an Urban Art Safari, seen Monsters in Benton Park Lake, and Quested for Statues, plus a lot more. Living in St. Louis for nearly 16 years and I've found things and places I never knew existed. Try it in your area.
The Kiel Opera House is an immense chunk of stone that once had a back to back auditorium (torn down to build another event venue). Designed by LaBeaume and Klein and built in 1934 its doors closed for the final time in 1991. In its history it has hosted a great variety of events - Presidents have spoken there, music of every genre - The Rat Pack (Sinatra, Martin, Davis), Grateful Dead, Herman's Hermits) - has echoed from its walls, people have cheered and stomped as wrestlers grappled in the squared circle. I never had the pleasure of being inside but Mary tells me it was a cool place to see a concert (the last she saw in it was R.E.M.).
Check out the pics. Someplace near you is something to discover.
Namaste, Wayne
Great columns above the doors. Beautiful detail around the windows and what must have been a great view from the balcony. Years of patina have split the sculptured face above the door. Sheets of plywood cover the old doors but someone painted doors giving it a funky look.

The ticket window is now painted on a piece of plyboard that blocks the opening.
