No major contributions to society by Hispanics, he commented with a tone of self-importance and the conviction of the righteous. There have also been no Nobel Price winners in the Sciences by any Hispanic or Mexican he added. In my time on Gather I have read and have been subjected to numerous idiotic and prejudice filled statements, from “they all look alike” to “they are all deviants, thieves and welfare cheats”. However, no statement has irritated or annoyed me more than the one mention at the beginning of this article.
On Saturday May 5th, my girlfriend and I hosted a fight party and invited all our friends to watch the De La Hoya and Mayweather fight. The majority if not all of the attendees were Business Professionals, Educators and Hispanic. Normally I do not distinguish my friends, business associates and colleagues by race, color or ethnicity. However, it is an important fact in the writing of this article. After the fight and after a few drinks, I mentioned to the small group of people who still found themselves at the party, my dealings with certain individuals on Gather, and how certain people were always making Xenophobic and racist remarks towards me and anyone of Latin decent. After a small amount of prodding I gave in and I brought up Gather on my computer. As I brought up, statement after statement, regarding Hispanics, immigration and illegal immigrants, the laughter was loud and thundering and it almost drowned out the music in the background. The statements that brought the most ridicule and laughter was the one that entitles this article, “No major contributions to society by Hispanics” and “There have been no Nobel Price winners in the Sciences by any Hispanic or Mexican.” After a few heated words between us, my ex-business partner and fraternity brother mentioned that we should look up as much information and facts to prove the individual who made these idiotic statements the fool that he is. So here are a few excerpts from the list and facts we compiled that night. There is no skewing or denials that can be made by anyone that change these truths.
The great American poet, Walt Whitman, said, "I have an idea that there is much of importance about the Latin contributions to American nationality that will never be put with sympathetic understanding and tact on the record."

Santiago Ramón y Cajal Spain
Santiago Ramón y Cajal was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the structure of the nervous system.
Miguel Servet Spain
His work in anatomy and physiology led him to the discovery of the circulation of blood through the human body.
In science in 1968, Luis Alvarez won the Nobel Prize for his work with subatomic particles. As a teacher and researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, he helped develop microwave beacons, a ground-controlled landing approach for aircraft, and a new theory for why the dinosaurs became extinct. Also, in 1995, Mario Molina, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, along with two other scientists, won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for research that helped the world confront the threat that chlorofluorocarbons pose to the earth's protective ozone layer.
In medicine, Dr. Walter Reed is generally credited with originating the theory of yellow fever transmissions by mosquitoes. The truth is that he only confirmed this theory. Carlos Juan Finlay, a modest Cuban physician, was the one who actually originated it. Up until the time that Dr. Finlay began his research into yellow fever, the medical research profession worldwide believed this disease was transmitted through the air or produced by a putrid substance from dead marine organisms. In 1879, Dr. Finlay suspected this theory was wrong and began his research, which lasted two years, after which his findings convinced him that yellow fever was transmitted by mosquitoes. For the next 22 years, American scientists, including Dr. Reed, repeatedly rebuffed Dr. Finlay's attempts to convince them that his theory was correct. During this period, yellow fever killed more American soldiers than died in the Spanish-American War and claimed the lives of 52,000 French workers constructing the Panama Canal. It wasn't until 1901 that the North American scientists, following the lead of their colleagues in Mexico, Cuba and Europe, finally confirmed Dr. Finlay's theory. One can only wonder how many lives would have been saved if more people had listened him earlier.
Hispanic contributions in our country's wars are:
War of 1812 | A battalion of Hispanics from the Canary Islands and New Orleans were among General Andrew Jackson's troops who defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans.
|
Mexican-American War | Captain Juan Sequin and other Hispanic Texans fought at the Alamo against General Santa Anna's soldiers.
|
Civil War | In addition to David Farragut, about 10,000 other Hispanics fought in this war, on both sides of the conflict. Among them was Cuban-born Loretta Janet Velasquez, who fought for the Confederacy disguised as a man. Before she was discovered and discharged from the Army, she fought in several battles, including the Battle of Bull Run. Afterwards, she became an effective spy for the South. On the Union side was Cuban-born Federico Fernandez Cavada, who fought in the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg and was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Later, he wrote a book about his experiences, participated in Cuba's 10-Year War and attained the rank of general.
|
World War II | Over 400,000 Hispanics served in the U.S. armed forces during this war. Twelve were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. In August 1995, Secretary of Defense William Perry participated in a ceremony to honor these people, whose acts of heroism under fire were awe inspiring.
|
Korean War | Thousands of Hispanics served here. The 65th Infantry Regiment, made up of Puerto Ricans, took part in nine major campaigns. Nine Hispanics were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. There was also Colonel Manuel Fernandez of Florida, who became an ACE for shooting down many MIG fighter planes.
|
Vietnam War | Thousands of Hispanics were involved here, too. Among them was Everett Alvarez, a decorated pilot, who spent eight and a half years as a prisoner of war, the longest confirmed POW of this conflict. Hispanic representation in the fighting forces in Southeast Asia was double what it was in the civilian population at home. Several earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.
|
Gulf War | About 25,000 Hispanics served in the U.S. military during this war in 1991 |

I have no problem with people legally entering the united states but people that illegally do it burn me. I dont care where they are from.
Racism is a 2 way street.
That is, seriously, the funniest thing I've read on Gather all day.
You go, Juan. Let the racists drive up and down their 2-way street, whatever that means.
=)
Singular
xenophobia
Plural
xenophobias
xenophobia (plural xenophobias)
A "pathological" fear or hatred of foreigners.
Juan you dont come right out and say you support illegals you just cloud and twist around the issues.
You wrote the article about outlawing spanish. I dont think anyone wants to outlaw spanish but you twisted it around to say that people from the united states wanted to outlaw it.
Is is so unreasonable to want people to learn the language of the country where they want to call home? In the United States we speak ENGLISH. Can I go to Mexico or France and DEMAND that they accomidate all my requests in English?
You talk about smoke screens well you use them. I dont support illegal immigration so automatically I am against hispanics.
People in glass houses.....
Xenophobia is no longer in the APA textbooks.
Show me one person that is a true xenophobic.
I dont support child abuse or animal cruelty or 100's of other things.
Illegal immigrants are CRIMINALS. I don't care why they became criminals, and I don't advocate sending them to the pen. I just want their asses thrown, very unceremoniously, OUT of MY country - and YES I can say that....I'm Native American.... Apache, specifically. Explains my temper, I guess.
And if you truly have heard that I would find a better Burger King to eat at.
And Hispanics NEVER call other people names right?
As for your challenge, if you can show how to prove a negative, if this is possible, I would be glad to try.
Yes I did say to shoot an illegal or 2 in the leg as they cross the border the others will get the message but frankly the illegal immigration issue burns my butt.
How dare these people come to this country and then protest....they are criminals. This stands for all countries.
As far as the native american thing....and dont take offense chandra.
Frankly GET OVER IT. So what you are a native.....if your ancestors would have known how to fight decently then you wouldnt have let the europeans kick your butts.....so blah blah blah I dont want to hear it.
I dont like the term anymore than I like anyone being called a white cracker.
Racism needs to be eliminated from ALL races.
Juan I am assuming that you are also petitioning the Mexican government to realize that all borders are "invisible" so anyone should be able to come and go as they please....and of course all signs forms and everything else should be printed in English and anyone should be able to get any entitlement program because they are no illegals there are just people.
The Mexican government needs to realize this as well as the United States government. Illegal immigration should not be a felony. The mexican government should not deport illegals.
Are you doing this also. Are you so highly critical of the Mexican government?
Finally, I maybe a lot of things, but one thing I am not is a queen. My current and former girlfriends can attest to that.
Very poor to bring the Native Americans in to this like that!! I'm sorry . . . I still love ya', but wow . . . WAY over the line. If you haven't read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, It makes you regret what happened . . . and informs you. We didn't 'kick their butts' . . . they died in huge numbers from disease we brought.
We were wrong my friend. And since we overwhelmed and decimated them from a variety of ways . . . we didn't have to deal with them later . . . like what happened in South Africa. Enslave the population and they will still be there . . . decimate them . . . problem solved.
No honest appraisal of the history would ever say anything good about the US policy.
This need not have entered your discussion and (as a personal favor) - please read the book.

Doyle I <~~~~~
Singling out contributions to civilization by Hispanic people is inherently racist. It doesn't relate at all to illegal immigration issues. In my opinion, selecting any race and gathering statistics on that race only engenders continued racism. What next, compare the stats to another race, add them and mention one is statistically better?
I never see a list like yours listing accomplishments of green-eyed people. Why do you suppose that is?
Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
The article is in direct response to certain individuals who keep making idiotic statements downplaying the contributions of the Hispanic culture to America and to the world as a whole. Every time some moron makes some derogatory statement against me or all Hispanics then I will do my best to prove them for the fool they are. As for facts and stats regarding the contributions of green-eyed people to America, I will do my best to placate you.
I recommend you state as much IN the article . . . so the purpose is clear. I for one have no doubt every race has contributed in their own way.
Thank GOD for tacos . . . and thank a Hispanic!!!! (Sorry to make light . . . but it IS a brilliant contribution)!
Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
PS: Burritos too.
You have called many people who do not support the illegal invaders being in our country racists and xenophobes!! As Lori stated, you twist comments in order to achieve your goals. Many of us have experienced this tactic.
I know you well enough now to know that you aren't an illegal immigrant supporter, however through your comments/ articles, that is what people are perceiving.
I dont have problem 1 with legal immigration. I have a HUGE problem with illegals. I dont care what country they are from or what planet for that matter. If they want to come to the united states then they need to do so according to the law. I have to abide by laws so does Timothy and everyone else. Why should we bend or break the law for these people?
Dont talk to me about "invisible borders" have you ever tried to get into Canada? They are tough. We should take a lesson.
Dont talk to me about the effects on the children. I have my own kids to worry about and frankly it is the parents fault they put them in the situation in the first place. We need to get rid of the anchor babies. That will end the controversy....deport the kids with the parents.
I have crossed into Canada and back several times, and it was never was what I would call tough. At most I had to produce a driver's license, and when accompanied by children, I didn't have to produce any documentation for them even though I had it with me.
There is no fence along the Canadian border and in most places it is invisible. If you live close enough to it, you can cross by taking a stroll over to see your neighbor.. It is only the heavily used roads that have border crossing stations that are staffed.
The fact that you blame it all on the people who enter this country illegally and not the U.S. citizens who profit by encouraging to the come here so they can be paid sub-standard and often illegal wages speaks volumes.
Secondly, the articles and comments I write are aimed at educating the fact that it is delusional to deny the underling affect and boost the topic and problems of illegal immigration has had on extremist and hate groups. I have always felt; if you do not denounce hate, when given the chance, then you are contributing and enabling that same hate.
Finally, as for writing an article critical of illegal immigrants, in order to prove my anti-illegal immigrant feelings and views, I can only response in this way. There are many people here on Gather that I know are against murder and rape and yet they have never said word one about their views on this.
You dont know me. So how can you tell me that I dont support any kind of sanctions against employers because I do. The fact of the matter is people have free will and yes it is their fault that they cross the border illegally...noone is twisting their arms.
If you have a DWI or a domestic assault or other charges you have to go through a lot of paperwork to get into Canada legally. If you dont want to do it legally you are a criminal. I know one of my girlfriends had to clear up her record to be allowed access to canada.
Maybe you should know what you are talking about before your fingers start moving.
I am mostly responding to something Juan commented on earlier, which I think is very true: a lot of posts are put up here, ostensibly about illegal immigration, and they're window dressing for racism and xenophobia, which is not only offensive on the obvious levels but also offensive to those of us who aren't racists but are interested in civil debate on that issue. It's very much akin to posts that people put up "about affirmative action," or "about hate crime legislation," when the reader finds out quickly that it's not about affirmative action or hate crimes: it's about a way for that person to put his views onstage behind a smoke screen. In other words, these people aren't just bigots, they're bigots and cowards.
This was a very informative article, Juan. Thanks!
It's ridiculous how people start jumping all over you as if you're pro-illegal...again...and your article has nothing to do with it. :) Here's a 10.
What wrong with saying "Yay for hispanics"? Or "Yay for any other human subset" (including caucasian)?
Being part Native American (as are many hispanics, though I'm not hispanic personally), it's hard for me to be hard over on illegal aliens. Since all of this land was effectively stolen from the people that were there first, I just can't get worked up over illegal aliens. I'm a huge fan of PEOPLE of all nationalities. I still think the fact we're such a hodge podge is what's makes this country great.
Of course, I live in Texas and there's still a question in my mind of whether or not they don't have a better claim to this particular part of the country than I do. But I'm not going to lose sleep on it.
Good for you, Juan, for reminding us how much hispanics have contributed.
"Of course, I live in Texas and there's still a question in my mind of whether or not they don't have a better claim to this particular part of the country than I do".
What a clueless, uneducated statement. Are you for real??
You don't deserve to be a citizen of this country.
You both need to get a clue and wake up. Of course the employers need to be blamed/punished as well.
Who cares how easy you can get into Canada. Maybe take a trip there and take all of the illegals with you!!!
This country belongs to US citizens----NOT illegal invaders from other countries who think that they are going to illegally come here, march in our streets and DEMAND citizenship rights and benefits.
As many of us have said........Feel free to support them with your paycheck once they get back to their own countries, but you are NOT going to force the majority in this country to support them with ours!!! It is NOT going to happen.
If you feel so strongly about the issue, why aren't you in any of those countries volunteering your time to try to make change?? Oh, I see-----you don't want to give up your US comforts and luxuries.
Look at how you have written this article-----simply to get a reaction. You intentionally write articles like this, then put on the "poor me" hat when the reactions start to surface.
Just in case he decides to provide those links, I must tell you that those links don't represent those of us " True Americans " who are opposed to illegal immigration.
Brenda as for your contention, I am playing the fool and victim. This article has everything to do with empowerment and nothing to do with victimization. Every time we as Americans stand up for our rights, it is a victory to ideals of what the U.S. really stands for.
You are more concerned about Mexico and Mexicans than you are the US and US citizens. Actually, you are the one who is racist. You consider yourself part of those people and that country, more than you consider yourself a US citizen.
If it was up to you, there would be no problem with the entire population of Mexico illegally coming here.
You use articles like this to try to bring out your racism and try to hide it at the same time.
