A Brief Gripe About Groups

Look here. If you know there is already one or more groups for a psecific thing... say Artwork by Gather members, birds, whatever... do not go and make another one. This a big part of the problem with navigating through groups on Gather: Way too much redundancy.

Please do try to find what it is your are looking for,  if it doesn't exist then by all means make a new group... but not if there is already a group for it... or several even. That is just irritating and makes it much harder for new people to figure out what to join. Use your freakin heads.

Also, please oh please do not continually update your article 18 times. It is annoying to get an alert that I need to go approve an article only to find I had already approved a zillion times. got an update to your project? Post in another article, hell, you'll get even more hits that way.

I always search before creating a group, however that doesn't stop people from duplicating them.

To be fair, I've searched before making one, and later found there sorta was one similar to mine that didn't come up in the search. Oh well.

Yes. The search does suck... and I have fallen prey to that myself when I was a bit newer.

...but I have seen people making duplicate groups that they knew damn well already existed. It's irritating.

Sound advice. I wonder if people do that because they think it will yield them more points. Actually, it only dilutes responses. I haven't formed any groups on global warming or environmental issues because several of them already exist. Does anyone ever use tags to find articles they're interested in?

Yes... and yes. They do it when they think a group is popular and they weant to cash in on that, and yes, it absolutely dilutes everything when they do it. The idiots.

I have searched by tag, but not for groups. Good idea, that.

Editing once or twice is expected.... but I actually have one ( a person I really like, too) who has edited like 20 times in the last month. ohj.

That's what I hate about Yahoo. You go looking for a group and no matter how obscure the topic, there's 30. Of those 30, 25 are no longer active, but you have to slog through all of them to figure which ones aren't. When I started my ESL teaching group, it was because I was looking for one to join and there wasn't one.

I can only hope people will take your advice.

My biggest group peeve is people posting an article to every group of which they are a member, relevant to the group or not. I have to CONSTANTLY remove content from ReviewBoston.

I'm sorry, sweetie, but no one is paying attention. I published two article about groups, a year apart, to no avail. Like Laura said, people publish to every group they belong to, making the whole concept useless anyway.

Sigh. I guess I can't get anything right around here. I thought the new Gather was all about creating thousands of groups for the same thing and publishing to all of them (as well as to another 1,000 that have nothing at all to do with the topic of the article).

Dang.

I removed an article about Paris Hilton from the '100 Interesting Things About Me' group (which was around a long time before someone created the copycat 1 - 1001 interesting things about me group). If I find out Paris Hilton is publishing here under an alias, I will apologize.

I have to agree with this article.. If there is already a group.. then I join that group... If there is not a group.. then I make one for others to join ...

And I do try to keep my postings to groups that are relevant, I think gather needs to let us categorize them as we need themso that we dont miss groups and we dont put articles in groups we are not suppose to.

No problem here. I haven't created one group yet. I won't create a group. I don't even like being accused of being a member (ugh) of a group. I did however join a bunch of Gather groups because I was told it was a good thing to do. Then I deleted them in bunches. Now I'm joining them again just for the fun of seeing it say "You have been accepted." I love to read that.

I can't keep up with the groups I belong to..when I post an article or picture it takes me longer going through them to figure out who to post it to than the actual writing...LOL

You are so right - I was so annoyed myself today because once again I had to remove totally unsuitable content. yes, we all miss once in a while sending stuff to the wrong groups unwillingly but this person posted several articles per day and NONE had anything to do with the group's theme.

I just read this today. It cracks me up that people join a public site and then think they can tell other members what to do or what not to do. I realized you said "please," but really, when you write an article like this, do you actually expect anyone other than the jokers or your buds to agree to follow your instructions? Is it just venting because you are frustrated? You don't actually expect anyone to say "Oh, Wow!!! I never thought of that," do you?
