The truth is here -- as is the verdict on the long-awaited CD from local rapper Brother Ali, "The Undisputed Truth." Mark Wheat and Danny Sigelman are my guests, and the enthusiasm for this one is mutual and, well, undisputed.
The same can't quite be said for our other picks this week (but that's often how we like it on Musicheads; it keeps things interesting): Mark's choice, the self-titled debut from a rather Nick Cave-ish band out of New Zealand called The Veils, and my pick, the latest from neo-bluegrass trio The Avett Brothers, "Emotionalism."

Movin' on....
You know, I don't just crank up Brother Ali for the heck of it. Some singles find their way into a pod playlist or so, but I don't just sit down and listen. Which is a shame, because his work is solid. Not to mention (and to sort of reflect Mark's statement) a smokin' hot producer in Ant.
Personally I haven't heard the entire album yet (lame!) but what I've heard is giving me a good shake, so I'm grabbing a deeper sneak peak of his myspace page now. He's also engaging live: Brother Ali: Live from SXSW.
Hadn't registered on The Veils, but love the razor-sharp album title.
p.s. What up with all the Shriekback hate? Man, "This Big Hush" is a creepy snapshot of the mid-eighties as far as I'm concerned and who says that's a bad thing?
I think Brother Ali made the local album of the year. Thoughts?
Sorry Julia. Just never was a Shriekback fan.
I haven't heard the Brother Ali album, but I have the utmost respect for Ant and the Rhymesayers artists. Intelligent hip-hop with powerful messages, and innovative production. This is coming from a guy who, two years ago would have sworn to you that he'd NEVER own a hip-hop album, nor would keep the radio tuned to a staion that played it. i totally dig Atmosphere and Unknown Prophets, and will be checking out BA soon.
Brother Ali is probably the most exciting MC right now. His vocal delivery is stunning.
And, aside from the nauseating album title, I like that Veils disc. Whenever Nick Cave is conjured up, that's OK with me.
And Bill...not a Shriekback fan? Big Night Music is a really good album. Try "Black Light Trap," the horns are great. And "Gunning for the Buddha" is good, too.
I'm out.
The Avett Brothers are on Late Night with Conan O'Brien tonight (Friday 5/11)
Well, who can argue with that?
Seems like Tony and I have a point of disagreement on The Veils' album title. It nauseates you, Tony? I think it is sharply sly - and maybe a bit too much so - as a reference to strychnine. Makes me wonder what happens when artists sit down to determine their album title.
Is it anger? Is it art? Questions, questions.
I just got caught up with the "vomica" part and the association I made with it. Although, ingesting strychnine will, no doubt, give one a major tummy ache.
I hope we get these guys in the studio this summer and we can ask them what it's all about...
