Here are some tried and true techniques for saving money at the grocery store:
Meal Planning
Read the grocery store weekly ads to find out what is on sale. Then begin planning your weekly menu based on the items one sale at the store.
Shop with a List
When ever you go grocery shopping, make a grocery list. When you are at the store: STICK TO YOUR LIST; IF ITS NOT ON THE LIST DON'T BUY IT!
Carry a Calculator
Carrying a calculator with you when you shop allows you to calculate how much you are spending.
Shop early in the day.
You get through the store faster and spend less
Shop alone.
Try to shop when you're alone. Those little helpers can quickly boost your bill.

I have a large upright freezer in my basement as well as a smaller chest freezer. These two thing let me buy in bult when meat is on sale.
You may pay a little more upfront but it will last and save you in the long run.
Using coupons will lower that bill as well. I like to shop at stores that double coupons.
Always compare price, sizes, etc. and get the most for you money.
Weigh prepackaged fruits and vegetables. Buy the largest for the same price as the smallest.
Only buy what you are going to use. Especially if you use coupons. Just because you have a coupon doesn't mean you have to use it. (my mother in law is a prime example for this)
