What could she say
In those moments,
The minutes ticking away,
The space narrowing
Between her and him,
As the light dimmed
And the heart pounded in disbelief?
She didn’t know,
Her mind froze in the closing scene,
The murmuring words,
The closing of eyes.
Memories flashed,
Sounds filtered through
Like spilt juice, stabbing jabs
In heart and head,
And the slow realisation,
Like a waking stretch,
Pushing through the silent room,
That he whom she loved
Lay motionless and dead.
