My husband spent four days in the hospital last week. He's home now, recovering slowly. But as a Type A personality, I'm still stressed. So in order to look at the lighter side, I came up with five things not to do at the hospital.
1. Don't take my writing. Others may be able to work on their prose, compose, edit, etc. Not me. I'm too easily distracted. Or maybe I'm just nosy and want to know everything that's happening.
2. When hubby requests me to raise the head of the bed, don't do it myself, ring for the nurse. That way, he won't end up, knees under his chin because the button I push lifts the middle of the bed. Or his feet won't end up higher than his head. (Is it good to supply more blood to the brain?) Or his lunch tray doesn't smash his legs, because equipment challenged me cannot even raise the tray.
3. Don't try different elevators. Stick to the one I came up on. It seems every hall has elevators. They all go to the same place, right? Not necessarily. Once, I took the one closest to hubby's room. It opened into a spooky hallway, no one in sight, other halls branching out in all different directions. Now, I'm a terrible map reader, anyway, so this was like a maze. Thank heavens for the signs with arrows pointing east or west. I followed the arrow that indicated "Lobby." After numerous twists and turns and things that go bump in the night, I reached the desk and sofa and chairs in the lobby. Yay!
4. Do not ... do not tune into the Sci/Fi channel on the night it shows giant crocodiles dismembering their victims. Gross. Not a pretty picture.
5. And perhaps the most important thing to remember--be very diplomatic when talking with the doctor. Above all, do not mention that you cannot read his handwriting. (Even though it's true.) Enough said.
May you never have to experience the above. This is three times for me in the past two years. Three times is enough.
I did get a lot of reading done.
Happy Writing.
