We have a hummingbird feeder attached to our dining room window, and it's so much fun to watch the birds eat. They're also very argumentative, at times. Usually, if one bird is eating and another one flies in, they'll both take off, neither willing to share it seems. But the other day, things changed. The little dark-headed bird (I've seen two dark-headed and two that are light headed) was having breakfast when the second dark-headed bird zoomed in. Number one (let's call it Mama--I know, I know, not very creative, but it's the best I can do--) bobbed its little head at number two (Papa Bird, for the present, though they could be the opposite). This might be a warning, a greeting, or whatever. Maybe some of you bird watchers know. Anyway, Mama bobbed her head, Papa hovered nearby, for a few seconds, then he settled down on the second perch and commenced feeding. They ate together. I was surprised.
A couple of days later, I saw almost the same thing happen with the two light-headed hummingbirds. (Auntie and Uncle Bird, of course.) They actually ate at the same time. Maybe they're in love.
They are neat little birds. The photo is actually from last year. It's a baby hummingbird that was learning to fly. I was lucky enough to spot it perched on the feeder one morning, Mama Bird fluttering her wings overhead, urging Baby Bird to fly. Mama Bird would fly down then she'd fly up. Baby Bird ignored her and perched there for quite a while, allowing me to get some great shots through the window. A once in a lifetime chance, I imagine. Finally, Baby Bird gathered its courage and soon was flitting through the air and settling in the mesquite tree, along with Mama Bird.
Enjoy the picture.
