THE VOICE (Satis Shroff)
A voice says I don’t want
To have anything to do with you.
Another voice wonders aloud
How they could have gone so far.
From the first words of love
The first warm and electrifying touch
The first kiss.
The first quarrel
Then the many differences
The biting remarks
That grew like cancer
Till the tumour of hatred.
Metastasis.
A voice says, ‘I’m not sorry.’
Another says, ‘Neither am I.’
A lawyer asks politely,
‘Did you have intercourse,
During the last year?’
A voice replies, ‘No.’
The same question is posed
To the other half.
Or was it the better half?
The other voice replies ditto.
‘Then I declare this bazaar closed,’
Says the old, paunchy German judge.
The air of freedom outside the court
Tastes bitter
Laden with carbon-monoxide.
The voice thanks the lawyer
For the expedient divorce
And hums an old tune:
Yesterday, love was such an easy
Game to play.
But there’s no life in it.

Relationships are mysterious and take a lot of work. Sometimes it's best to say goodbye. I hope something good will come out of the destruction.
