Find Out Who Your Ancetors Are at Ancestry. Com

In the early 1980’s, my husband’s Grandfather became ill and was unable to take care of himself.

He was so upset because he thought we would put him in a home for the elderly. We never even considered that move. Instead, we built him a room onto our trailer and moved him in with us. This decision proved to be both difficult and very rewarding. We had two daughters who were preteen at the time. We all learned much from this wonderful compassionate man.

Like most elderly people, he loved to tell stories about when he was young. He told of the problems of growing up in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. He told of the hardships that his family had been forced to live though. He told of the old logging work camps. . The logging camps and the days of the late 1800’s may be gone but his stories and memories will live on. These memories will be forever in our family because we took the time to tape him while he was telling the stories. Now his voice and his memories will play an important part in later generations. The stories of his parents and his brothers and sisters are not lost. They are alive and still being shared in our family.

We have black and white pictures of the logging camps of days gone by. We are very fortunate to have all this wonderful information at our fingertips. You may not have stories like this to share with your grandchildren but you can share their heritage with them. There are many wonderful sties online that will help you to find your ancestors. You can find out where they served in the wars. There is just so much wonderful information that is available to you about your family. Do you have a desire to know what country they came from? With the wonderful world wide web, you can find this out and so much more in just a few minutes. You can find those stories that are about your Great, Great Grandmother or Grandfather. Are you ready to find out more about your ancestors and their stories? Come take a tour with me to the site called ancestry.com.

Once you are on the home page, you will see a lot of information. Don’t be overwhelmed at all this. It is really easy to find you way around the site.

Notice at the top of the page, you should see tabs saying Home, My ancestry, search, ancestry community, learning center and store. The tab that is colored green is where you are now. Notice also on the homepage is a section on the left that says “Start your family tree”. That is where you will probably want to start. Just type in a name that you know already and then search backward. After you have put in a name, click the green ‘get started’ button. That will take you to another page where you can put in all the information that you know. You could start with yourself and go backwards.

Also on the home page is a section call “US Census collection” You can search by the year.

Scroll on down a little bit more and you will see “more collections”.

This section has birth, marriage and death records,

The Social Security Death Index (SSDI), obituary collection and many other vital records

Oneworldtree

This section has A worldwide collection of millions of names in family trees submitted by members

UK Census Collection

The full UK Census from 1841 to 1901, including original images of the census documents

US Immigration Collection

Ship passenger lists, naturalization records, ship photos and much more

US Military records

Rich military records including original images of WWI draft cards and much more

Members Collections

An easy way to connect with other members researching the same ancestors

Now, scroll on down to the last section on the left. This site has just added a new free audio storytelling feature to the family tree tool. Just click the “ Audio tab in the family tree and use any phone to record your story and have it saved to your family tree. I just love this new addition. Now our family stories will not get lost. Can you imagine if your ancestors had this feature available to them. What wonderful stories will you preserve for your future generations.?

Now lets click on the “My Ancestry” tab at the top of the page. On this part of the site, you can start your family tree. You will be able to:

Automatically search billions of records to grow your tree

Gather your photos and historical records

Easily share with friends and family

You can even upload an existing family tree file from your computer.

Now click on the “search” tab at the top of the page. This is the part that you will enjoy. Notice that on the left hand side it has four tabs labeled, Historical Records, Family Tree, Stories & Publications, Photos & maps. You will want to explore each of those tabs.

Scroll on down a bit and you will see that you can search for records by location such as Region or by State

On the right you will see a number of records listed. Have fun and explore the site before you start your personal search. Find out what wonderful things it has to offer.

Now click on the Ancestry Community tap at the top. This is the area where you can share research or ideas with other Ancestry members. When you are ready to begin chatting with others just click on the Orange create profile now button.

Now lets go check out the Learning Center. Click on the “learning center” tab at the top of the page. In this section you can learn helpful information and interesting facts about your surname. You can find out the following:

What country did most people with your surname come from?

What does your name mean?

Learn answers to these questions and many more.

Learn tips to help with your research.

The site boasts that The Ancestry Library is the best collection of family history ho to and genealogy learning material on the internet. You can browse so many things at this section.

Click on the store tab at the top. This section is where you will purchase any material that you are interested in about Family History. They offer everything from books to software and maps. If you need it, they probably have it.

Now this site does charge for you to have a membership. Membership ranges in price from $34.95 for one month or you can upgrade to $155.40 for a year. There is a lot of things that are available to use for free but if you want the best information, you will need to pay for that.

Now are you ready to find out where your ancestors came from? Have fun and get to know who you are by looking into your genealogy.

Connie, you have gone to a lot of effort to get this information to us. Thank you. I love working at genealogy. It's a lot like Gather - addictive! I've not had a chance to carefully read your article, but I will take the time to do so.

I am afraid that it may be too big of an article to get peoples attention. Maybe I should have submitted it in 2 sections.

Thank you for sharing this great information, and for the part about your husband's grandfather. We all need to pay more attention to our ancestry, because before we know it many of these people will be gone and all the wonderful stories they could have shared will be gone with them.

Connie, my sister and I have been doing this for a while now, my sister has gathered loads of inf. she has come across family that we didnt know existed in other states. We have found out so much interesting stuff, The big thrill is to see your family members named in a web site, because someone is also , looking for the same family members, and they have already started a family tree.

Thanks for all the information! I need to get busy on our family tree again, but I keep hitting a brick wall! Both my great grandmother's were orphans...one was basically sold to my great grandfather off of the Indian Orphan Train. It's going to be a challenge to say the least!

My only problem with Ancestry. com is the price, but I had some extra money in my account one day and decided to go for it. I have had a great time with it also. I love the link where I can find out who my famous relatives are. Since my husband and I both have a line that has been here since the Mayflower, we are related to many famous people. I recently added Shirley Temple and the Winchesters. (why can't we all be first cousins instead of 10 times removed!!) My husband is third or so cousin to Laura Bush. I have also found some living non-famous people, and it has been a help to add some more of those branches.

Vickey,
My oldest daughter and her husband has written books on geneology and they did a book for my Mother and for my Father with each of their family history back to the 1500's. It was really cool. As it turned out, my dad was going to church with some of his distant relatives and did not know it until he got the book for Christmas.

In our area, we used to make a family tree each year in grade school as part of our class. We would even go to the cemetaries and do tracings of the tumbstones of our ancestors.

Connie, I found out alot in the past several years. My sister knows alot more than I do because she is older than me. I found out alot when I had my son christened in NY and after my mother died. But what I have learned really goes only as far as my grandparents. My mom would tell me about my grandparents on both sides but not too much else further back. I know some about the extended part of the family. I don't think she knew alot since she was the baby of the family and her mother died when she was about a year old. Oh and to make things worse, I only found out at a family reunion in 2000 that we weren't related at all by blood to the family that was having the reunion. The two families were raised together very closely in Vandagrift PA when they came over from Slovakia.

Now, could someone tell what is so inappropriate about this article? Why, Why and Why would someone flag this. If that person could post a comment as to why they flagged it and let the writer know why. A persons feelings were hurt here, there was alot of time spent on this article, it is very informative and I am sure took alot of time to write it. Keep on Connie, as you can see, everyone that commented here enjoyed your article. Always remember there are unkind people all over this earth, apparently were not raised with manners. Connie: This is a GREAT article and I can't believe how much time and effort you put into this. I am most definitely going to be checking out Ancestry.com now. I have always wanted to know more about my family, but have never taken the time to check it out. This article makes me want to do that, so thank you.

I can't understand why this article is flagged though. You haven't violated any of Gather's TOS, so it's a tad unclear. The ONLY thing that I see that needs a small fix is just the fact that Ancestors isn't spelled correctly in the title (you accidentally spelled it "ancetors"), but that's IT!

Connie, you are a wealth of information and I always look forward to reading the things you publish. Please keep up the good work and I hope you get an answer soon from Gather as to why this has been flagged.

Sarina,
Thank you for taking the time to read my article. I posted in hopes that someone could use the information to find their family history. Sometimes it can be overwelming when you see all the tags and links on a site. I wanted to help in some small way. I know your mother will love the article but I am not sure she can read it untill the flag is gone unless she goes to my namespace and looks at my articles. Thanks

Audrey, not yet. I am working on it though. When I found out alot we were partially moved into a new place in Ca. Then, shortly after getting back, we decided to move back to Florida, so that was a whole other project. I still have boxes that I have in my dining room to go through pictures from both my husband and me, though mainly mine, to organize with alot of notes from what I found out at my son's christening and from my mom's funeral. I am still working on it though and the next time I go to NY I swear I am brining a tape recorder! The only thing that upsets me is that I got a bunch of photos from my sister that were "extras" fromwhen my mom, dad, aunt and uncle were young and dating that I never saw before and haven't been able to locate. I am hoping they are just somewhere and not lost from the move.

Thanks so much for this info that you have put together Connie. I am doing my
genealogy from the Chuch of LDS. They have much info there and I have found
people way back to 1800's. I will keep searching until I find all there is to find!

Karolyn,
That would be so sad if they are lost permanently. What a loss. I hope you find them and they are unharmed.

I've always wanted to do this since I know nothing about my ancestors or family for that matter, I just don't have the funds. I'm going to check this out though. Thanks for the information and great article. It's so interesting.

I have the book on my father's side and it goes back to the 1600's. His nephew did all the finding out for the family.

What a great article, Connie. I've bookmarked it. My grandparents and my aunt and uncle (mother's side) have done most of the family geneaology for me, back to Mayflower and Revolutionary War. No Civil War. We were all in Utah by that time.

I've played around with the various genealogical sites; they are a lot of fun.

At the time, we did realize just how much taping them would benefit everyone. Now we are very thankful that we did it.

Connie,isn't genealogy FUN?!?
I have lots of information on my family dating back to the 1600s and my family comes from Royalty...I just ended up on the wrong branch!
Once we reached a certain point the history books led us the rest of the way.
I have to give my aunt credit for most of the information. She researched to join the DAR.
Still...it's nice to know where ancestors hail from.

This is a great resource. I have been a member of ancestry.com for about 5 years now. The boards there are great and people are willing to go out of their ways to help in addition, the free tree program is better than the gamily tree maker program that I purchased for 70 bucks.

your article was very inspiring. after my surgery in 2005 i spent a month in rehab. i was one of the youngest people there. to see the older generation just waiting for family to visit and never coming was heartbreaking. the people were sitting at the nurse's station in the hallway with nothing to do. everyday i would wheel around talking to them and having fun. i promised myself that my mother would never be in a home as long as we can give her the care she needed. i respect you for the decision to help and take care of your grandfather.

Brenda,
I find that to be true all over the place. The elderly in our own community are so lonely. They love to just have someone to stop by and say HI. I am glad you were there to help ease their lonilness. Thanks for sharing your story with me.

Hi Connie, Just when I thought she has hit a brick wall, along you come with this... I think I will use this to see if I can go further now. Actually what I know of today is because of the hard efforts and research done by my wonderful sister in law Renee.
This girl has done wonders let me say, and thanks to that, it may be possible to proceed further now.
Thank you in advance for this information which I hope will be very useful.

My mother has done tons of work on our family geneology. She is pretty computer illiterate, but she sure was able to teach herself how to use the Family Tree Maker without problem! She loves it and the rest of our family benefits from her hard work. She has created four huge 3-ring binders with all of the info from both of her parent's lines as well as both of my Dad's lines. So interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Connie,
I just found your article.
We're about at the end of a 2 week trial of ancestor.com.
Are there other places we can research?
My husband has also been wondering if there is freeware to do your family tree info on or what other software you'd recommend?

Faith,
Yes, there is a wonderful site and it is one of my favorities. It is called Family Search a>
It has the program that I use for my family tree. It is 100% free and so is the download. They even have Ellis Island records.

Faith,
The entire world is at your fingertips at the family search site. Check it out. It is great. So much wonderful knowledge. We have alot of our family posted on Family search as well.

I am a member of The Church Of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saints, commonly refered to as "Mormon"
We are big on genealogy. The Family Search site is run by our church. That is why it is totally free.
