When someone mentions the South, the first thing that comes to mind is hospitality. The Southerners are known for the genuine Southern Hospitality. I love portions of the south. Not only is it beautiful but full of history!
The first thing that comes to mind? Southern draws. I mean the southern drawls of ladies and gentlemen, not the kind of trash talk that SOME people who aren't me, think of when they think of the south.
From my experiance in the south, I would say hospitality was the norm. People moved a lot slower because of the humidity. But the only southern state I have really been in is Texas. I do not think of The Duke's of Hazard"!

Hey..where are all of the Aussies, Canadians and Kiwis ? They were more than glad to post on my Confederate Flag image and threads about gun control, but now that I've opend up the discussion to include them, they seem to have done the old " Duck and Run " !!
I think of humid summers, great thunderstorms, and beltbuckles the size of hubcaps.

Most people are not ignorant to make prejudiced statements about the South alone (well, maybe a few). Remember, I still have family in Texas as well as tons of friends, and my husband has family all over Alabama.
BUT, your other article had to do with the symbolism of the Confederate flag, and THAT symbolism is what most people don't like.
Yeah, Southern cookin', yum. After living in Texas and Arkansas (and being a YANKEE) I found that people in the south have a lot more respect for their parents and 'elders' in general. They are polite. No one is a stranger. Everyone is Mr. and Ms. It's all good.

well i have been down here since 1982 and one thing for sure is the people are a lot friendlier...or most of them are. i had a hard time getting used to everybdoy waving and saying hi i was raised in illinois and they don't so that there. Another thing in the small towns people are easy to get to know and they got your back in most cases. and i knowi will hear about this but living in florida was like living up north, i guess its because most of the people there are from the north....

The first thing I think of is SWEET TEA!! I love it!!!
I think Southern people have funny (in a good way) accent. I often ask my husband to "talk Southern" to amuse me.
Considring comments on other threads, I'm quite surprised at the comments here so far.

my opinion is that it's losing its sense of self through commercialism, tourism and mass migration into it from those eleswhere :-(
