I was having a good day today. Finally able to work in the yard after all these cloudy cold days. I went inside to fix my grandson a snack, then went out to the car to look for his little container of applesauce he thought he had brought from his house. When I came back, my shoe caught on his little wagon and I fell onto the cement steps. I put my arm down to brace myself and heard the bone crack.
I went in the house and knelt down to avoid fainting. Tried to reach a friend to drive us to urgent care but no answer. Finally I loaded up my grandson, hooking his seatbelt the best I could with one hand. I thought I would be responsible and go to urgent care rather than the ER of the hospital where I work. Big mistake! It was actually VERY non urgent care, for sure! They were training someone to do x-rays, so that was a slow process. I believe their x-ray machine was built 2 weeks after the x-ray process was discovered. I am sure I am now totally irradiated!
Finally 2 1/2 hrs after arriving, I was allowed to go stand at the counter and wait another era while they processed my discharge. A convict could have gotten released from prison faster! My hungry, tired little grandson got a bite to eat and then we went to pick up his sister.
I am off work indefinitely, not a good thing. The hospital is already short staffed and now my unit will be even worse. I will see an orthopod next week and hopefully get a better idea of how long I will be off. The doctor today couldn't tell if there were one or two fractures so that will be the major deciding point in how long I will be unable to work.
So I will be here on Gather typing away with one hand.

Why don't these things happen in the dead of winter when there's nothing to do!!!
Hang in there!!!
I can't imagine having to do all that you did right after you broke it. I'd want someone to baby me but me being a Mom I probably would have taken care of myself anyway. Good luck with it!
I hate this one handed typing! Jackie, thanks for reading slow!
"I went in the house and knelt down to avoid fainting" you poor bugger :(
Thanks for sharing your misfortune with humor.
Fortunately, I am not in any pain; it is just in the way. Hard to take a bath, hard to get dressed and many other small things you just take for granted.
Appreciate all the good wishes.
Yanno I have to say I'd probably feel like a complete blithering idiot to offer up that little rosey bit of sunshine here...
BUT in a valiant effort to focus on the positive, the bright side here is two fold. One, your grandchild wasn't hurt...just mildly traumatized. Second, it could have been both arms.
BUT DONT GET ANY IDEAS! ;)
I recount this to the two of you ONLY because sometimes the hospitals aren't always the "best". The bottom line I have learned from all of this (and trust me, I've omitted a lot) is this: IT IS MY BODY AND ONLY I CAN TAKE CARE OF IT. I MUST TRUST WHAT MY BODY TELLS ME AND BE INSISTANT AND PERSISTANT WHEN DEALING WITH THE PROFESSIONALS WHO WORK FOR ME TO HELP ME. I CANNOT TRUST THEIR JUDGEMENT. They live outside my body and will make generalizations if I don't make everything VERY, VERY clear to them and persist until I am satisfied they have done all possible.
I have complained repeatedly about pain in my upper arm from my shoulder(since the accident), but since it's relatively minor, I haven't insisted on x-ray or treatment. If it continues after the rest of me is healed, I might have my GP pursue it.
I know the medical profession has a lot going against them with insurance demands, et al. It still doesn't alter my final awareness in caps above. Had I not been insistent, I would be living with unbearable pain in my back (still just bearable at this point), and not understanding why my elbow would be so painful to use.
Sorry for the length.
I work at a nearby hospital and KNOW things would have been better handled had I gone there. I am sorry that you had such a DREADFUL hospital experience. Next time, call me and I will come take care of you!
Years ago when I broke my elbow, the emergency room x-rays were read by an elderly doctor. He said my elbow was fine. All weekend, I lay on the couch with my arm propped up as I could not move it. On Monday, I got a call from my doctor's office saying to come in to get it casted. The radiologist had read the x-rays Monday morning and had seen the fracture!
I'm glad this is way past and you're all healed!
