I stock up on new colorful socks from department stores and dollar stores and I turn them into what I like to call (drumroll please) Quirky Sock Critters. So far I haven't had much luck selling them, but they've been a big hit as gifts. And they match my nutty personality so it's all good.
I don't use patterns. I visualize what kind of monster, animal, doll, toy or whatever I want to make and go from there. Sometimes the print of the socks is what inspires me. Like the purple giraffe print and the cow print. How could I resist? I save all the little scraps to make ears, noses, horns, antennae's, and what not.
Usually the eyes are buttons or glue on googly eyes or felt. If it was for a baby, I'd just embroider the eyes. I stuff them with polyfil. Most of the parts are sewn together on my trusty dusty machine, but then I have to do a lot of handstitching to add the embroidery, buttons, and details. But it is a lot of fun and they are very squishy and cuddly. I just wish I had time to make more. I feel like a mad scientist sometimes with bins full of arms and ears and parts they will someday be a trunk or a horn or something.
I'll show you some photos if you'd like.

I love those! Have you tried a MySpace account? You could have an account just for these critters! I bet you could even try to market them to PerpetualKid.com or some like business. I think they are great! Even cool toy stores could sell them for you...
