This year has been a marketing year for me, and part of that has been discovering the power of an author's chat.
You've probably all seen chatrooms on the Internet. They're free to download, easy to use and can either be a great way to communicate across the miles, or a real drain on your time (occassionally both). Author's chats are more focused: they're like an open interview, with the audience able to ask questions and a moderator to keep the conversation on track. For the audience, it's a great way to meet your favorite authors in an semi-formal setting, learn about their books, their ideas, the writing, publishing, and marketing process, and whatever. For authors, it's free publicity and a great chance to get some positive feedback (something every author should have.)
I started my chat room almost by accident. I'd joined a blog roll to promote my book, Infinite Space, Infinite God (http://isigsf.tripod.com), just about the time a friend opened her chat room. It seemed like a neat idea, so I offered to put one on my site for the blog roll team. Word spread, and soon I had to set a regular chat time or end up spending every weeknight hosting chats! I'm already booked into September, and loving it.
FabChat meets Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern Time (US). To attend, go to www.fabianspace.com. Click on FabChat. Type in a user name. If asked, click "Enter Without Password."
Below is the schedule for the month. If you'd like to join, contact me via the chat site or Gather. If you'd like a reminder of the chats, contat me and I'll get you on my list.

I'm already on several writer's chats, but none that meet on Thursdays :)
I write high-tech SF (I taught physics and engineering at several Universities) and my three novels that are out are doing well in the U.S. and Canada and very well in Europe. I recently returned from a trip to Russia. I've contacted a translator there so that I can break into their market. Russians eat of SF, especially if there are Russians in it :) I have 7 Russians in each book.
