Inspired by Mike Firesmith's images of a neighbors foal, and grieving a bit that we would be denied foal patrol this season since our own mares were not bred last year, Tonia and I went on a different kind of 'foal patrol' this afternoon. Instead of the all day, all night vigils that normally woud define this season for us, we drove until we found a stable not far off the highway. In separate paddocks we found two different youngsters.
This sweetie is a filly. She raised her head, and sought comfort from mom when my attention made her uneasy.

Her buckskin mom was satisfied that I was not a serious threat.

I left them in peace and wandered around the corner of a barn.

This mare had a colt. He was extremely curious and friendly and her relaxed behavior told me that she was an experienced mother. She glanced my way only once or twice while I admired her son.

On my way back to the car I couldn't resist one more picture of Miss Filly.

I decided that I could wait the eleven months it would take for Poesia and Sonata to have thier own foals, as long as I could find scenes like these to enjoy.

Bob, truly you should plan to come! It would be so much fun visiting while we waited beside a campfire for the blessed event!
MK, I wanted to bring them both home!
Mike, I hope you come by to see these two!
Thank you Marilyn!
Well, Mike, I don't know. We found some zebras on a big compound but couldn't take shots of any quality through the fence. I didn't see any youngsters at their sides, but one might have been pregnant. :)
Debbie, I am glad you enjoyed! Yes, nature makes me smile!
Tonia you will be worse by far when your Miss Sonata has her first!
Really Layla? Well, get ready for a herd to gallop through!
I've been on one foal patrol with you Debbie. As I remember, we all nearly froze to death. We then had a few interesting bbq's on the open fire pit that you kept smoldering for a week or more, I made a batch of my secret bbq sauce that made everyone a little crazy, and I had to go home before the little guy was actually born. I can see where the late spring births would make for an easier intro into the world and better photos. But I'll never forget my introduction to this interesting part of the horsey set.
Rosa, It really seemed both foals posed! Glad you enjoyed!
Pam, you have to come next year for another celebration!
Nancy, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed!
THANKS for posting this essy.
Hilary, isn't it amazing how quickly they master themselves!
Melissa, Thanks!
Carolion, I loved your descriptive name! Baby gallopers! I have heard of the nuns at Brenham, and their herd. I have never visited, but perhaps some day. We have a herd of minis near us. I pass them every day on the way to the horse pasture. :)
Ina, I hope your weather improves soon! I do look forward to your pictures!
Aaron, I am thrilled you've enjoyed!
Trish, thanks for coming by and checking them out!
Brian, aren't they so fun! Thanks for coming!
