I want to take you through the horror I experienced one rainy night. It was so horrifying that I could not even speak for hours after the ordeal was over.
It started out like any other evening being home and alone. I was a about 16 years old at the time and spent a lot of time home by myself without others being around. I would sit in my room and do activities, homework or just watch television. This night though, was different than most nights.
I happened to be watching television and things seemed just fine, Until the noises started happening. The first out of place noise I heard was of dishes clanging around that were on the counter as if someone bumped into them. I kept telling myself that it was just our cat who likes to get into trouble and was probably on the counter. I continued on with what I was doing trying to ignore any noise that may scare me that should not even scare me.
After about a half an hour or so, it began to rain. At the time we lived in Monticello, Indiana and the storms down there were quite much worse than anything in here in michigan could ever deliver, but at least it was only raining. I noticed scratching on the window and looked up to see the cat wanting in the house and out of the rain. Wait a minute. Didn't I try to dispell a noise blaming it on a cat that was not in the house at all.
My bedroom was just at the top of the stairs, so I peered quietly out my bedroom door and looked down the stairs to see if I could see anything. I saw nothing that would make me worry. I am so glad that I had brought the phone up to my room and would not have to go down to the main floor to get it for any reason. I also have a knife I keep between my mattresses, cuz you just never know when there may be an intruder and you need to protect yourself.
I tried to calm myself down and began watching more tv when after moments had passed it sounded like someone was walking up the stairs. I tried to tell myself that this is just an old house and it is creaking and groaning. Thud,creak... thud, creak... the sound began to get louder and sounded like someone was either playing tricks on me or they were after me. I called my boyfreind at the time and talked to him thinking that would calm my fears.
We talked for a while and about 15 min into our conversation, I told him about the footsteps on the stairs. I told him it sounded like someone had combat boots on adn would step on the stair loudly and then you would hear a creak. There would be a moment of pause and it would happen again. The sound did not seem to get closer, but I was too afriad to look out my bedroom door and had shut the door to make it all go away.
What happened next just scared the living daylights out of me. If someone would have actually peeked around that door, I would have probably died of frieght. You know when you are watching a scary movie and you are yelling at the actor to just scream out for help but they seem to say nothing at all, or they try to just talk and nothing comes out. Well, let me tell you that you can actually be so scared that you are not able to talk for hours.
After being on the phone with my boyfriend at the time, the sounds began to begin again. I stayed on the phone with him for quite some time when he could hear the noises over the phone. He began to become scared as he really thought someone was in the house with me and the noises we were hearing had to be someone in the house making them. He had me call the police.
I did call the police, but it actually took 15 minutes for me to say "I think someone is in my house". Yes I am not exagerating, it took that long and by then she said that police were on the way. As I could hear the sirens from afar, I felt a bit of relief knowing that help was on the way. There were several cars that flashed their lights all over to see if they could find anyone. No one was to be found.
When the officer came in to talk to me, he could see that I was truly upset about something.. It took me about an hour to tell him about the thuding like there was someone on the stairs. The officers were there at the house for about 15-20 min and my parents showed up. My parents to this day do not believe me in what I heard and how I was so scared that night. They even laugh at me, but I know what I heard and how scared it made me feel.
I know the noises could have been a many of things or even a ghost trying to toil with me. When we lived in Monticello in the late 1980's, it was considered a very white town. The KKK was and probably still is prevelant in the town. I know think it may have been a ghost of someone who was in the KKK. Being native american Indian, KKK is not very fond of us. With our dark tanning in the summertime, when there are no other blacks or Indians around to compare, it can be difficult for others to really know what race you are.
I hope you enjoyed this story with me.
Have a great day and don't get scared.

I remember several times being alone at night as a kid and 'hearing things'. I always got the old stand by explanations too, the house is settling, it's just an old water pipe, etc., but isn't it odd how these easily explained phenomenons that others pooh-pooh at stay with us well into our adult years?
