Do you know more about grammar and usage than any English teacher alive? Is the dictionary your best friend? Then maybe you have what it takes to be a copy editor.
Copy editors check written material before it is set into type, in order to correct errors in grammar, spelling, usage and style. They also must keep an eye out for libel and errors of fact. While some companies employ fact checkers, copy editors are often asked to take on this task.
Although reading proofs is often part of the job description, copy editors are not proofreaders. The difference is that proofreaders simply look for typos and mechanical errors on printed material.
Many copy editors are fully qualified journalists, and often have the liberty to rewrite. Copy editors are the last line of defense against bad writing.
