A while ago I read some articles here on Gather.com, saying that the illegal immigrants are using the U.S. resources, including the emergency rooms in hospitals, because they do not have proper health insurance. It made me think that the illegal immigrants can use the emergency rooms for free. Is that right? Or did I misunderstand the claims?
I recently took my daughter to the emergency room, and I have just received a billing statement for nearly $300. It says that the hospital is still processing claims with my insurance company. But until the claim is settled, I am not confident that my insurance will pay for it. I remember reading my insurance policy which says they would not pay for the emergency room visit unless the patient is admitted. We went home that day without any hospital stay, so I don't think we would qualify for the coverage.
I just can't help remembering what I had read about the illegal immigrants. I would be really unhappy if they get to use the emergency rooms for free, and I have to pay the bills myself.
