We're already friends. :-) I only have 68 people and I can't keep up with all their postings when they're in a talkative mood. I'm sure I'll be picking up some more along the way tho!
I have 12 friends and 436 points. I don't take a lot of friends request. I talk to just a few people on gather and I don't like all the stuff that comes with taking a friend. Comments, articles and pictures. if you want points post articles.

If you write interesting articles (interesting is loosely defined and is ultimately determined by your audience, there is not set formula) post images that people want to look at, and you take the time to read and comment on other people's articles and images, then you will find that you have more than enough connections, you have lots of fun and a fulfilling experience on gather ... and the points will take care of themselves.
I have made lots of connections. I have disconnected from many that turned stale or became deadwood because they were not using gather much anymore. And ... I have no points!
I just checked "My Gather" and realized that I've crossed the 200 mark for connections. I'm thrilled. I've also crossed the 1,000 "milestone" on points. Thrilled again.... ; ) Here are my totals:
