Liza's Melodies
This poem is loosely based on one of South Africa's most beautiful Afrikaans songs.
The melody is hauntingly beautiful.
I have a friend
Near the blue sea
On the slopes of Table Mountain
When the sun sets
She plays her heartfelt melodies
Her fingers know the way
Stroking black and white
The piano's knows her yearning
About heartache and longing
And soothing deepest pains
Yes the whole world pauses
Lost in darkest hours
Hearing sounds of night
And what Liza plays
Liza can't seem to stop
Once she's begun to play
She does not let me leave
Until her last note's done
Standing on her balcony
I drink a glass of wine
And look at Cape Town
At the lights
And the dark dark sea
Below on the street
I see a hobo and his friends
They stand looking up
With garbage at their feet
They all know the melodies
That flow from her home
Long after twelve
With all her doors open
Even if the neighbours moan
She's every hobo's dream
Yes the whole world pauses
Lost in darkest hours
Hearing sounds of night
And to what Liza plays

I loved every moment of her playing
It's an exquisitely moving melody and I wish I knew how to get in on Gather.

Lovely poem.
I hope others will go to the web page so they can hear and enjoy the original song, too.
Please go to the link again and then just wait. It seems to take an age before the music starta. I nearly gave up but I'm glad that I didn't.
I hope that you've got good speakers on your PC. On my laptop it sounded very tinny.
Yes I'm back. Thank you for caring. I value that very much. Salud.
You did write an excellent poem Fred dear.
Thank you so much ! it is soothing my soul just by reading it
love and light
If it soothed your soul then you and I share that glow from the song.
Everynight I open the door as I sing my heart out loud to the music of this my piano player!
The hobos in the story of the song, would linger in below Liza's window just to hear the sounds of her music. They did not want to go home...it meant so much to them.
Well it seems that you've satisfied a lifetime of yearning and I'm happy about that.
Yes I was down but then, like you, i said what the hell. Do I get wounded by a minnow or race through the waves like a dolphin?
i comment on your articles because they touch a chord. Salud
Thank you for coming here. Did you like the song? I hope so.
Yes I know what you mean William. It is a melody even without the music. Glad to have your visit.
Hugs and Thank-you,
Marilyn
Thank you Ed. I hope that you managed to listen to the melody. Glad you came by.
Wat sal jou mamma daar van se?
Dan loop ons so onder deur die maan
Ek en my suikerbossie saam
Fred - dit is onzettened goed - maar ja dat wist je al; maar ik dacht het om jouw te vertellen. "L" ;-)
Hahaha. Yes I did listen to him but the new Afrikaans music is far more melodious than he ever was. He was more for the farmers when they wanted to celebrate after a hard week's work.
Hell you know a lot. You're practically a South African,
Come over and let's have a beer ... Windhoek Export. Or must I come over, bring with me a couple of Meerhof Rubicons and talk about your paintings.
I remember one very early misty spring morning in upstate NY, someone was staying with a friend across the street. I was up making breakfast for my hubby before he went to work. Not an everyday ocassion, mind you! :-) As I cooked and we ate together, the neighbor's guest was on his front step gently picking out some delicate tune on a banjo. I think he was just picking something spontaneous... it wasn't any tune I knew.... It sounded like a mandolin or something the way he played it, very soft and tender. I still remember that morning.... and wished he had stayed longer and made a habit of it. :-)
Liza played in an upstairs room and always with the balcont window open. Hoboo's would satnd on the street to enjoy some moments of joy before retiring to their hovels.
Please get those good speakers. The melody in incredibly beautiful.
Thank you for your visit.
Good job Fred.
