Can We Talk About This? Nukes Outside of Iran and Israel

In many eyes, the U.S. attacking Iran without being provoked would be worse for the U.S. Iran attacking Israel would be much worse fo rthe World, but give the U.S. reason and backing then to attack Iran.

Good forwarding of news. Seems a lot of countries are going nuclear in the Middle East. When you carry a big stick it's always on how your gonna use that big stick. Glade to see Jordan, Egypt, and other Middle East countries thinking past oil. Maybe we should. As for the terrorist, we have many big sticks and we don't have to have troops in their neighborhoods to use them.

Well, I think the fact that for Iran to be meddling in Iraq is reason enough. Providing sanctuary to Moqtada al-Sadr is reason enough. But I don't want for us to always be the bad guys in the world.

Iran did attack Israel, remember the Hezbollah dust up of last summer? Hezbollah is an extension of Iran. In my opinion, that's another reason we should attack, but I'm not in charge.

But we are not using our sticks. I suppose that we do not want to be labelled as unjust, or unilateral.

A comment was made this morning that gave me some thought - and it would tie in somewhat with the possibility of attacking any one anywhere anymore..The comment was made on Meet the Press this morning after a very annoying interview with Cheney..(same old replies to new concerns and "I'm not going to answer that) At the end of the show, the final comment made was: Should we be considering being involved in any war in other countries with a volunteer army?

There was a time I believe we did carry a big stick and we used it to the best of our ability to defend others....the difference I see with Iraq and Iran is we have a big stick - only this time we are holding it in the middle of a civil war that has nothing to do with our freedom or anyone else's...a result of going in the first place for the wrong reasons....my other point is - personally I feel...there are very few wanting to do anything with the stick they hold now, because its no where near as big as it use to be....let alone carry it....

Not even addressing the morality of the issue, we do not have a military sufficient to enter another theatre of war. There are already worries that the National Guard will not be able to aid in any potential US disasters.

If Iran is funding terrorist organizations on a massive scale, it is only a matter of time until we will have war with them. Diplomacy is best, but when the other side uses diplomacy as a shield to attack, then it is meaningless. There is a weapon system that will make long range nuclear warheads obsolete. China has already tested this device and I know we have several proto-types. The problem is controlling the energy source. The USSR was the first to try to make this weapon work effectively in the 1950's. That China used this weapon to destroy a weather satellite really raised some eyebrows. Our world gets more frightening everyday.

I know this sounds kind of rude.. and it has nothing to do with Marty. Just want to reassure you Marty I do not mean anything towards you.. What I say is in reference to the whole situtation all together.. Even though I know there is never a chance in hell it will happen..

I truly wish the stupid bs of all the crap in the world would stop.. I wish we could all live in harmony.. I am tired of the fighting, tired of the wars, tired of people being injuried.. Sorry just needed to vent..

I'm going to address as many of these points as I can.

We were under the Nonagressive pact we signed in 1921 after the first WW, we could not attack any country in Europe unless we were asked to help. Much is the same attitude today with Europe. They put that on themselves by forcing us to sign that damned treaty.

Wrong. We have thousands of untouched troopps in Europe, and many of these countries don't want there, so we could use them in a third front and still have enough troops. The thing is, when the US pulls out of these countries, and leaves them to their own accord, they have this nasty way of starting another WW and crying for help. When we do help, we are spit on soon afterwards, by Allies like France (who in both wars played both sides of the fence and killed many US troops). So I think we could with little risk, and if they did go to war with each other again, only help the UK and our present allies helping in the middle east.

This has been an on going debate about the middle east, that diplomicy has never truely worked there. Countries like Iran see diplomicy as a sign of weakness and not strength, so they will play the EU for what they can get and try to make the US look bad, which many (including Americans) are so willing to let them do.

Now the article.

With many of these countries in the Middle East, trusting them with Nuclear power, is like trusing a madman with a ton of C-4. I will promise you few if any will use it for what it was intended for. We would see many "Irans" come to life, and they would all be willing to use the weapons without a second thought.

"What good is served by a weapon that shouldn't be used?" NONE.
Nuclear power generation is the absolute stupidest option when it comes to alternatives to fossil fuel. We are already up to our asses in nuclear waste. Hell, some morons even decided to make it into bullets to get rid of it, and the physical effects on OUR troops using such is still not known, but it certainly can't be totally benign. Teller and Oppenheimer let a very nasty genie out of the bottle.
God help us all.

Christine, this would not be another theater of war. We are in the area already. Another theater would be China, or North Korea, or Russia.

We have a volunteer Armed Forces.

We should not be planning to invade/occupy Iran.

I question if we will ultimately do anything with our sticks in the area.

There will be several unstable governments for awhile. Remember, India and Pakistan are nuclear powers.

Christine Zibas don't sell these troops short they are some of the best in the world. They can and will step up to the plate and get the job done. Let them do their job and don't cut their legs out from under them and they will get it done.

What business is it to us anyway? To me, this is like the schoolyard bully (U.S.) trying to take away spit-wad shooters from the nerds. Halliburton is a company that has already endowed Iran with nuclear technology -- why is that never mentioned? And Israel has already bombed and taken out Iran's previous effort at nuclear technology. So why are we acting as Israel's proxy fighter in the region? Clearly America's government should be protecting America -- not a socialist basket case bully (see the recent Lebanon experience). Let's stop feeding into this whole neocon mentality that we are an ever-lurching-forward empire. Intervention is generally counterproductive, so let's stop trying to run the world. We saw vividly what happened when we supported the Shah (and by association, his secret Savak police). That's how Iran was radicalized -- and Bush is doing it again in Iraq today. Instead of trying to run the world, let's pursue a policy of real free trade -- along with limited government and diplomacy. Then the world will be inspired by our example -- instead of sickened and killed by our misguided policies.

Those are not our only two choices. If only we would support the pro-democracy groups in Iran in a real way and left them to do what they needed, there would be a regime change, but the Congress has dropped the ball again. They already have voted for such a plan, and they did not fund it. You can thank the State Dept. who thinks all dictators and terrorists are just peachy...

Dear Felicia, do not feel badly. Everyone gets sick and tired every now and then. The only problem is that the other side (the enemy) does have a 'vote' in the whole of this. Sure, we could pull out. Sure, we could quit and give up. Would that end it? NO! It would enbolden our enemy.

Why am I using a singular when referring to our enemy? Because while it may appear as though they are many, they are one. They just call themselves by different names.

If you would like help, there is a group of Muslims who are trying to take back their religion who really need our support right here at home. They need to get their voices heard. Here is their site: American Islamic Forum for Democracy. Read about them, write about them, interview them.

In other words, there are things we can do to combat war. We can help those who are being hurt the most by having their voices silenced.

Felicia, in an arguement in Iraq's parliament, one of the speakers used a phrase that harkens back to a split in Islam over 4oo years ago.
That kind of hatred continues even unto this day. The people of Iraq foolishly listened to their spiritual advisors when electing their reps to parliament. A secular body would by now have stopped much of this sectarian violence.
And here, look what we did by letting the religious factor weigh in. WE HAVE A LEADER THAT THINKS HE IS A CRUSADER.

William from whatI understand it wasn't China that used that technology. Think about they just within the last 10 years have been able to launch high orbit satellites. They don't have the technology to make the weapon you are talking about. That technology has been largely abandoned in favor of something called a fragmentation satellite. Basically a claymore mine in orbit, that when detonated sprays small pieces of shrapnel at high speeds in all directions. In zero G those fragments will go for 100's of miles. One piece an inch across can wipe out a comm sat.

The ABM system is not fully operational but is gettting closer.

We won't go into Iran. The Israelis will take care of that tinpot dictator themselves and save us the political fallout. Expect a mysterious explosion at the Iranian Nuclear Facility sometime in the next 6 months.

Oh Yeah visionaerie, that little nugget about Haliburton is never mentioned because it is patently false. Haliburton has nothing to do with nuclear technology. A pakistani nuclear physicist has admitted selling the information to Iran and to N. Korea. We have had no diplomatic relations with Iran since 1979.

But I have heard Haliburton is responsible for the increased solar flare activity and nor'easter last week that wiped out a big chunk of maines seacoast....Pass it on
