PART 5 4/13/07
Entering the dining trailer, the people all formed a line heading to the serving area. Each person was given a plate of food as they went by and at the end they could pick up water, tea, or coffee to drink with their meal. Dave and Helen quickly found seats with their new friends made since the disaster, and enjoyed a lively discussion while eating their meal.
The dinner this evening consisted of American foods such as roast beef, mashed potatoes, and gravy, with pie for desert. Each meal was on a different style to eliminate boredom and cooked by a cook that new that type of cooking. This was easy because among the survivors there were many good cooks from around the world, and they would take turns cooking for the people.
When finished with their meal, Dave and Helen took their dishes over to the place for disposal or washing. They also decided to join some of their friends for a concert outside that was being given by the resident band. This bank was using music and instruments from the big band area, and had good reviews from the others performances they have done around the villages.
Sure enough, the band was as good as reported and they all enjoyed the evening, but time was getting late and tomorrow was another working day. They split up with each walking to their own shelter. Dave and Helen had a small room in one of the portable dormitories. These rooms were just big enough for a small family and just one room with no plumbing. All utilities in the village are in the central supply area that is a maximum one block distance and on raised wooden walks that are always well lighted so the service area can be used 24 hours per day.
Inside the apartment Dave and Helen had a folding chair, and raised inflatable queen bed with blankets and pillows. They also had a reading light and small place to put any belonging they had. Everything in the village is kept sparse so that all have about the same living conditions. This is to keep costs down and reduce looting as there was not much to steal. The village was also heavily guarded such that people could feel safe. The apartments each had a lock with a key to the tenet and one to the village office so they could be locked but entered in the case of an emergency. They also had a ventilation and cooling system for each building to maintain good living conditions.
It should be noted that this village is one of the better designed systems that use portable housing for the residents. The villages can also be erected with a tent type set up to save money and when prior preparation is not complete.
