The crafts thing looks cool. I saw a flyer on it at the hotel I was staying at yesterday. Too bad I'll be there this weekend and not next.

I need to go read about the rollergirls. My stepdaughter lives in Alaska and has just informed us she's joined a team. We're freaked, although I understand it's not like it was 25 years ago. I still picture her getting clotheslined and thrown over a rail.

Ina, it's still a tough contact sport, but NOT like it used to be. They do follow rules and have lots of fun on the rink. It's a flat rink, so no rail, and the brave (or foolhardy) fans who sit on the sidelines often have a roller girl land on their laps!

Joanne, too bad you'll miss the craft sale - it's awfully fun, and not your typical cutesy crap, either.

Frick, yeah! Bring the in-laws!

Zpie ~ I still have a lot of difficulty picturing her doing this. She's a mild-mannered, peace-loving, vegan, sandal-wearing, eco-minded, hippiechick. I don't know what she thinks she's doing.

At the last bout, I thought to myself "Man, if I were only 10 or 15 years younger, I'd do this in a heart beat!" - and I'm peace-loving, mild-mannered, eco-minded, and vegetarian (not vegan). Not really a sandal-wearing hippie chick, though - I'm too mod and glamorous, as you can see from my picture! (wink)

Ina, you'd be surprised at the variety of women who join roller derby teams. They all have day jobs or are students, and they're civic-minded, too -- portions of the proceeds from the MN Rollergirls go to local charities - the gals aren't in it for the money. Check out their web site to learn more about them. Don't fear for your stepdaughter!

Ina: Yes, it's a contact sport, and yes, there are bruises and occasional broken bones, but they also teach them how to fall properly to minimize injuries. They don't make any money off of it, all skaters are volunteers, and proceeds go to charities. I think she's brave for doing this and wish her the best.

*Frick backs up right into Ponce. The chum bucket slams into Ponce's chest and falls along the front of his shirt and pants.
