On Point is talking today to Seth Lerer, English and Comparative Literature professor at Stanford. He has just written a book titled "Inventing English: A Portable History of the Language," which looks at the astounding evolution of the English language from Beowolf to Eminem.

This should be a very interesting discussion for those who are fans of words and languages.

I happen to love language, especially the quirky and wierd aspects of it. You would be amazed how many people feel the same way. For about a year now, I left all my different ESL jobs, open up my own website to give away and sell aspects of English, Spanish and French. One aspect of language that I thought would go nowhere but has been a hit ... Latin words and expressions in English. There are hundreds!

Both Tom and the guest mispronounced the name of Tupac Shakur. It is not "too-pac" but "too-POC". Furthermore, I am fairly certain that the audio clip they played was not Tupac rapping at all! It sounded like a famous Tupac beat (music) with someone else rapping over the top. This other rapper didn't really sound anything like Tupac. To incorrectly attribute the rapping delivery and lyrics is no small detail. Why on earth would you bring up someone's name and work if you are completely unfamiliar with either one? Please double check that audio clip you played and set things straight if you did in fact make a mistake.
