Comments....

The question is are they quality pieces getting comments or just random games and silly stuff that no one has to think up a decent comment for? Other than that it could be tons of connections. I hope one day to have 100 comments for real on an article, (my experiment doesn't count) with thoughtful debate going on and thoughtful remarks on something I write but I'm just happy that some are reading and some are commenting and I feel very connected to several of the connections I have made so far. You are certainly one of them.

Controversial subjects usually get a lot of comments.

I notice the shorter your articles are the more comments they get.

Beats me...I never get near that many either... some of them are just really really popular

We'd all like to get that many comments. If you'll notice with some who do, one quarter to half of the comments they make themself in response to what someone else has written. Others will carry on "conversations" with their friends using the comment section as a "chat messenger" of sorts. Then the are the ones who go on begging people to leave whatever they want to say in response to their plea to hit 100 comments because they've never had that many before. Personally, I have never attained that many comments, though I have recieved upwards to 70 or 80. Those are posts that discussed something important or controversial, which I don't do that often. I specialize more in writing something humorous to make people feel god, smile and laugh. I usually average 30 - 40 comments on one of my "normal" posts.

Oh, I also forgot the "point whores" who are only here to accumulate points so they can see what they can get for free. They play "games" which require little or no thinking on the part of those who comment. The "point whore" will post a one sentence question; what's your favorite color, boy's names that start with the letter "M", etc....and they only require a one word answer.

Here is a comment for you. I believe that if people complain about the Gather Community there are generally a lot of comments.

Sue - That seems kind of ironic, doesn't it? LOL

I think it has to do with the tags you use (people interested in that tag will read and readers will comment), the size of your network (more people, more potential readers,) and groups you post to (again more people, more potential readers.

Complain about gather, politics, abortion, another member, or play a games, like Rob said. I made up the dumbest game I could think of asking about toe fungus as a joke, and it got more comments than a short story I wrote. Go figure.

Yep, Jody nailed it. Rob, too. Point Whores are great though. I had a blast being a PW of the week, so I'm sticking up for them. The only other ones I've seen are the Good Morning, Good Afternoon articles that have a following. On average I only get between 15 and 25 comments on an article. The more people you have also helps.

Guilty as charged, Rob. But it was a fun experiment to see if anyone would do it.
I like to think that one day on here some will read my more serious stuff and know that I do more of that than the crap i sometimes spew out.

I too was a PW and I loved it. We do work hard for our points though.

Connie..everyone likes to be the PW sometimes, but the abuses are what pisses people off and why this is such a topic all the time.

oh so thats the secret complain and get more comments, travis your right i just said the same thing to. i like the points to but its like some of them get mad if you dont comment or rate, but they dont for us and its not fair, you know i feel like crying will that help get more comments then . i read, comment and rate the articles i read sothat you know travis and i gave you a 10 double

I've noticed too that the siliest stuff gets like 100 comments, but a well thought out, and thought provoking article may get 30 something at the most; I've found myself bewildered by it myself.
