Richard Lindzen, an Alfred Sloan Fellow at MIT, just publised a very telling article in Newsweek, which is, I'm sure, just a token to the concept of fair reporting. Dr. Lindzen goes on to stress at the end that he research is funded strictly by the government and not industry, which should make the radical leftists feel better. For some reason, environmentalists like to believe scientists who feed at the government trough who's findings generally encourage or result in yet more government funding.
It's very telling that scientists actually expunged evidence to support their global warming claim and to make it appear more valid.
Here's some of the more juicy quotes:
- Recently many people have said that the earth is facing a crisis requiring urgent action. This statement has nothing to do with science. There is no compelling evidence that the warming trend we've seen will amount to anything close to catastrophe. What most commentators—and many scientists—seem to miss is that the only thing we can say with certainly about climate is that it changes.
- it's apparent that there's no such thing as an optimal temperature—a climate at which everything is just right. The current alarm rests on the false assumption not only that we live in a perfect world, temperaturewise, but also that our warming forecasts for the year 2040 are somehow more reliable than the weatherman's forecast for next week.
- A warmer climate could prove to be more beneficial than the one we have now. Much of the alarm over climate change is based on ignorance of what is normal for weather and climate. There is no evidence, for instance, that extreme weather events are increasing in any systematic way
- In many other respects, the ill effects of warming are overblown. Sea levels, for example, have been increasing since the end of the last ice age. When you look at recent centuries in perspective, ignoring short-term fluctuations, the rate of sea-level rise has been relatively uniform (less than a couple of millimeters a year). There's even some evidence that the rate was higher in the first half of the twentieth century than in the second half. Overall, the risk of sea-level rise from global warming is less at almost any given location than that from other causes,
- Indeed, one overlooked mystery is why temperatures are not already higher. Various models predict that a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere will raise the world's average temperature by as little as 1.5 degrees Celsius or as much as 4.5 degrees. The important thing about doubled CO2 (or any other greenhouse gas) is its "forcing"—its contribution to warming. At present, the greenhouse forcing is already about three-quarters of what one would get from a doubling of CO2. But average temperatures rose only about 0.6 degrees since the beginning of the industrial era, and the change hasn't been uniform—warming has largely occurred during the periods from 1919 to 1940 and from 1976 to 1998, with cooling in between. Researchers have been unable to explain this discrepancy.
- Modelers claim to have simulated the warming and cooling that occurred before 1976 by choosing among various guesses as to what effect poorly observed volcanoes and unmeasured output from the sun have had. These factors, they claim, don't explain the warming of about 0.4 degrees C between 1976 and 1998. Climate modelers assume the cause must be greenhouse-gas emissions because they have no other explanation. This is a poor substitute for evidence, and simulation hardly constitutes explanation. Ten years ago climate modelers also couldn't account for the warming that occurred from about 1050 to 1300. They tried to expunge the medieval warm period from the observational record—an effort that is now generally discredited.
- Is there any point in pretending that CO2 increases will be catastrophic? Or could they be modest and on balance beneficial? India has warmed during the second half of the 20th century, and agricultural output has increased greatly. Infectious diseases like malaria are a matter not so much of temperature as poverty and public-health policies (like eliminating DDT). Exposure to cold is generally found to be both more dangerous and less comfortable.
- Moreover, actions taken thus far to reduce emissions have already had negative consequences without improving our ability to adapt to climate change. An emphasis on ethanol, for instance, has led to angry protests against corn-price increases in Mexico, and forest clearing and habitat destruction in Southeast Asia. Carbon caps are likely to lead to increased prices, as well as corruption associated with permit trading. (Enron was a leading lobbyist for Kyoto because it had hoped to capitalize on emissions trading.) The alleged solutions have more potential for catastrophe than the putative problem. The conclusion of the late climate scientist Roger Revelle—Al Gore's supposed mentor—is worth pondering: the evidence for global warming thus far doesn't warrant any action unless it is justifiable on grounds that have nothing to do with climate.

But, feel free to continue ignoring real science, in favor of fake "science" produced by the very industry that stands to lose when we progress beyond fossil fuels. And, be sure to tell your daughter, when she gets a bit older and watches millions of people around the world starve to death and die of dehydration that you helped to make that possible for her to see.
Some things are just the right thing to do.
Or that we were going to run out of resources in the early 1990s?
Or that the overpopulation would reduce us all to poverty?
One thing neither you or the other rights-stealing tax-raising extremists acknowledge is: 1) the adaptability of man-kind, and 2) the consequences have NEVER been as extreme as you've predicted.
You make your living scaring the bejesus out of people in hopes that more money is steered your way.
So, I'll look at my daughter and say, "Baby, the nuts took over and raised our taxes to the point that it wasn't in anyone's interest to create wealth. Then they hampered industry in such a way that they shut down and left most of us in poverty."
How much is the oil industry paying you to foist their nonsensical, disproven manure on us? I sure hope that it's enough to justify you making an utter fool of yourself on a continual basis. Does your daughter know that her daddy is a fool and a shameless tool of the oil industry?
What will be gained, beyond whatever you're being paid to make a fool of yourself publicly, by delaying the inevitable? Someday, we WILL be FORCED to move away from our dependence on the finite resource of oil, and, like it or not, even you and your daughter will be forced to drive cars that get better mileage or use alternative fuels, and power your lights and TVs with electricity that comes from the wind and sun, rather than fossil fuels. What on earth are you going to do then? How will you be able to stomach it? Will your life come to an end when that happens?
Or, will you be foolish enough to cling to your gas guzzler, pay $15.00/gallon for gas, and sit in the dark and silence at home?
Nothing Clark, he has said in another thread that he likes getting points so he can buy more crap from Barnes and Noble, or something like that.
The mind boggles.
See, that's what I like. You all don't answer arguments, you make accusations and demonize.
Not one of my questions on the absurdity of the dire predictions was answered.
All I got was, "How much is the oil industry paying you to foist their nonsensical, disproven manure on us?"
But to answer Mr. Kent's question on what I will do: I will buy alternative energy once it's competitive with what we currently have. To make it competitve will take time for further development and, I would argue, tax credits and other inducements to explore.
But in the meantime, we need to be able to access all available options. To not do so is to stick our heads in the sand and pretend there's no issue.
Truly disturbing, and goes to the heart of the true goal of radical environmentalism:
mother earth will breath a sigh of relief when the last human parasite on her dies...and she will go on to do great things again...millions of years from now...
Is it any wonder then that I and others have an attitude? Why should I play along with your stupid games when you won't treat me or anyone fairly?
Tell me, why shouldn't I treat you just like you have treated me?
Everyone that has been posted showing an opposing view to Global Warming seem's to be in Big oil's pocket. That's the answer that I've seen reported about every post showing scientist that are giving evidence and opinion contrary to public opinion. But it seem's to me that scientist that are in Big Government's pocket seem to be up front and honest and unbiased.
How is it good that milk, beef, chicken, egg's, corn and more have risen dramatically over the last year in the name of global warming. Egg prices have risen nearly 30% in 4 months. For farmer's that rely on corn for cow's have doubled in the past year. That in turn mean's that milk I paid $1.88 last year is now up to $ 2.85 now. Farmer's are planting less soy bean, wheat and other crop's in favor of corn because it pay's more. That will in turn drive up the cost of a loaf of bread and other food's we depend on.
I live below the poverty line and see these cost going up and realise that I can't afford to fill my car because I'm spending more to buy the food that me and my kid's need. So Global Warming effects me very much. Or maybe I should say the solutions effect me. So yes I do have to think about the here and now. According to many here that make's me ignorant. Well if having to choose between cutting CO2 emissions and feeding me and my kids well I choose food.
Just another way, though, that the lefties try to silence dissenting opinions.
oh oh, here comes the whammmmmmbulance!
She's right you know.
It's only fair use if you quote parts of an article. The main body really ought to be mostly in your own words. Just putting in a link doesn't cut it.

Kerry, John F. U.S. Senator, D-MA
Gingrich, Newt Founder, Center for Health Transformation
Senator John Kerry and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich talk about how Congress can make wise decisions about long-term policy issues such as global environmental change. Topics include ways in which Congress might be able to resolve its differences on this long-range issue through institutional change, new analytic techniques, and legislative innovation.
You are so angry and full of hate, I truly feel sorry for you. You believe we're all doomed, while I'm optimistic in that I look for positives in situation, rather than focusing on the negatives and trying to capitalize (probably shouldn't use that word, socialize, maybe?) on the positives.
You see only doom and ignore the adaptability of humans. It's almost as if you want the world to be doomed. Reminds of a post on a previous blog entry that said something to the effect of "it'll be a great day when mother earth is rid of the human parasites."
I'm quite proud of the roll I play as father. Having a child is a wonderful thing. The only thing that comes close is the satisfaction I feel as a producer (in the sense that I help create) and being part of the creative class that keeps this country moving forward.
I'll continue to teach her right from wrong, to see the positives, to using her mind to produce and be weary of those who have a radical agenda.
The only thing that saddens me about that, though, is she'll be one of the ones trashed as I have been, she'll be one of those punished through draconian taxes so that others can feel good about themselves.
Well done. You can see how good it is by the ire you've raised from Gather's liberal community. What I'm surprised at is the lack of people who would back you up on your views commenting here - and there are many who would. Maybe you should join a few more groups and republish.
Let me preface this by saying, neither Chris A or myself is disputing that there has been an increase in the temperature is that clear enough? So stop saying we are disputing "Global Warming", it's misleading and disingenuous.
That said, since it is your firmly held conviction that Al Gore and his band of merry sycophants who have made over $20 Million so far on this "the sky is falling book tour" and is raking in between 50-100K per speaking engagement are in no way saying what they say for monetary gain. In fact is correct in humans corrupting the environment of this planet to the point that we have changed the atmosphere to a degree that it going to cause climatical changes that will be catastrophic to us, How do you explain the virtually parallel climatalogical temperature increase being observed on Mars over the same period of time?? I have posed this question several times to apocalypse is upon us crowd and NOT ONE of you has even attempted to address it. Do any of you have the spine to acknowledge that this would seemingly challenge the assertion of human's causal effect? Or is this fact just too inconvenient?
Just goes to show that most of these people know what they are saying is pure **** disguised as science and then couched in words that sound impressive but actually ambiguous, therefore easy to claim an entirely different meaning.
I don't have the time and frankly, I find the dishonest on the part of you and Chris A such that I feel it is not worth it for me to argue. Give me a reason to believe that either of you will behave honestly and maybe I'll reconsider. You argue like creationists, whom I've debated long ago. You are no different that they are and just as deceitful too.
You are liars, both of you, there is no truth in you. But by all means, prove me wrong. Let's see your position.
I notice she uses some of the 25 rules of disinformation.
She hasn't answered ANY arguments, instead she:
1. Becomes incredulous and indignant,
2. Sidetracks opponents with name-calling, ridicule,
3. Questions motives,
4. Plays dumb,
5. Associates opponents charges with old news,
6. Enigmas have no solutions,
7. Fit the facts to alternative conclusions,
8. Change the subject,
9. Ignore facts, demand impossible proofs,
10. Create bigger distractions.
Put up your best argument.
Stick to one point. No side tracking by you either.
No ad hominum attacks allowed.
Make your best case and stick to those rules.
However, I notice that elsewhere you have admitted that global warming is real and is due to human activity. State your full position for the record please. Best as I can tell it is that global warming is real, is caused by people, but is not a crisis and will only be 2-3 degrees and the we will invent our way out of it. Have I got that right?
Run Chris run.
OK - my argument.
1. Warming and cooling - climate change - are natural and cyclical,
2. The consequences will not be as disastrous as predicted (we can't accurately predict weather next week; I'm not falling for the clap-trap that we can predict it 50 or even 100 years from now based on models built on fudged data that decrease in accuracy as the further projection in time progresses),
3. The Radical Left and environmentalists simply use climate change (aka global warming) as a tool to cut down on development (aka economic growth) and increase taxes.
