Who needs it....?

Some days, I wonder who needs the baggage that comes with being a good person. When you are a good person, people rely on you to do things. Often times, it becomes a matter of taking downright advantage of you. When you are a good person, people know that they can guilt you into about anything. When you try to be a good person, you always let yourself down because there is no way one person can meet such high expectations that you set for yourself.

 So, my fellow Gathering Friends...I ask you WHO NEEDS IT? Who needs to be good and live the best life they know how to live. I guess that would be me, but it sure does come with a lot of responsibility...:)

Yes you are right about the responsibilities, however the alternative would be less acceptable I think. There are some rewards to being a good person. But the best reward is knowing that you are a good and genuine person that does not expect to get anything from the good deeds we do. But every once in a while it is nice to not be so depended on. I know exacactly how you feel. It is always worse when I am having a bad day. Some times you feel all alone in the world. I do hate being taken advantage of because they know they can. I have learned to sort out those people and not let it happen. I can always come up with something to tell them.

I think being a good person as you say, makes it easier to sleep at night. But, don't confuse being good with not being able to say "no." It took me a lot of years to figure out that I could actually choose to say "no" once in a while, it gets easier with practice!

I agree with Sue, I think it is possible to be a good person without allowing yourself to always be the "go to" person. Saying no or I can't does not make you a bad person. Give yourself a break.

Just say now now and then. Yes people will be mad for awhile but, maybe not. You have your own life to live. Being good doesn't mean you aren't allowed to say no. Been there done that. Good luck.

The simple thing to remember is if you lay down near your door people will use you as a doormat. Just a DB piece of Jamie's wisdom. (hey, it's hard commenting when everyone said it already)... :D (hugs)

Sue said it best- you can sleep at night. Be a good person for yourself. Not because of what other people think. And sometimes you have to say no. I am just learning this myself.

Good people always get taken advantage of, to some degree. It comes with the person's nature. The thing to remember is the reason you are doing it. Is it to make yourself feel better, got God or? If it's for God, it's not wasted, no matter how things turn out. I'm nit saying become a professional martyr. There are times when a pattern develops and you'll just have to say, "I can't," or "Not this time," or "I don't do that anymore," WITH NO EXPLANATION, following. If you start explaining, you can get dragged into an arguement or feeling guilty. Remember what Mary Poppins said when asked to explain herself: "Mr. Banks, I never explain ANYTHING."

I understand perfectly, because I often feel that way. But as I get older, I am more able to say no, and not make excuses. There is something very freeing about being totally honest, and saying "No, thank you". People rebel at first, but ignore that.
