When I was little, I took piano lessons and I liked it, but I always got in trouble for not practicing. I didn’t like the typical learning pieces and I didn’t care about being able to read music, I just wanted to play. Unfortunately, this was discouraged by my teacher and after a while I gave up and quit. However, a bit later, my dad had been messing around with trying to build acoustic guitars, and one day I picked one of the two he built up and began to play. I learned by ear, what sounded good to me was what I played. Later, I was convinced by my parents to take guitar lessons from a renowned teacher and blues guitarist. I figured it was about time to start learning music ‘seriously’ if that is what I really wanted to do with my life. But it soon became apparent that this teacher had the same obsession with learning theory and told me that unless I learned theory as well, I would never be a real guitarist, just some guy playing guitar. This perturbed me so much, that I quit the lessons after three months and have never tried to take any again. I’m perfectly satisfied playing what I want, how I want. To this day I can barely show you where the C chord is, but I dare you to say I’m not a guitarist. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’ll never be something just because you don’t do it the same way as everyone else. The best ones never do.
