I guess what I'm asking is:
What hard-copy CD's have you bought this year?
What downloads have you paid for?
This is not a witch hunt for copyright pirates!

This is a very intriguing question to me. Do people actually buy CD's anymore? With the closure of Tower Records, and the continuing increase of pirate downloads, does this spell the end of the hard copy CD?

But hard copies or whatever that I was bought or given
Maroon 5 - bought for me
Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet - Bought for me
How to Save a Life by the Fray - Bought for me
Fall Out Boy - Bought For me
I only buy itunes but the hubby buys me cds as gifts.
The most recent CD has been Meds by Placebo...going to see them later this month!! Woo!!
I've downloaded a few songs here and there but not whole albums.
Julie, I totally remember getting LPs! There is nothing like the distinct smell of vinyl records. In high school, my friends and I would also go to all the used record stores for old treasures from The Who, Bowie, Stones, Aerosmith, etc.
Sadly, times have changed in the music business and it seems it's a lot harder to get that gold record or to even measure an artist's success properly. I sure hope that TALENT still stands for something with the buying public...if so, your CD will fly off the shelves, MiG.
There is not enough space here for me to list them all, but I will try to select a few, since you said this year. Last year, I bought too many.
"Amazing Grace" - Mark Forrest
"Betania, Hail Mary" - Betania Choir
"Amazing Ordinary Things" - Ann McCue
"Dangerously in Love" - Beyonce
"Dim Stars, Bright Sky" - John Doe
"Elvis at Sun" - Elvis Presley
"Exitos de la Coral Betania" - Betania Choir
"Flowers of My Heart" - Lani Misenas
"Full" - Jon Dee Graham
"Metamorphosis" - Gina Alston
"One Rose, One Heart" - Marty Rotella
"The Phantom of the Opera" - Original Cast
"Ronan" - Ronan Tynan
"Such Things Are Finely Done" - Michael Smith
"Tales From the Tavern, Vol. I" - Dave Alvin, Peter Case, David Crosby, Michael on Fire, Sarah Lee guthrie and others.
"We Will Rock You" - original cast
"Whisper of the Wind" - Marty Rotella
and.... I have 7 copies of the new CD "MIG" on order at Amazon.
Kaite Trotta~ Release
Mindy Smith~ Long Island Shores
Great Big Sea~Courage & Patience & Grit
This year I have only bought Live at the Sunset Room and MiG (Phils edition and Oz edition).
Downloads from I-tunes....
Baby, I Love Your Way. Couldn't wait for the CD.
Thank God It's Christmas. Needed it for my Queen music collection.
I Play Chicken With the Train (Cowboy Troy... good for the treadmill)
I don't download any music.
My kids are likely to share with me. However, I did buy one CD this year. It was right in front of me, and put out by one of my top favorite singers on earth. It's "Growing in the Lord" by Nick Naylor. He is eleven years old, attends my church, and if he was on a TV talent show, I know he would be right at the top.
The first time I saw this little boy getting up to sing, I thought, Oh how cute, a little boy is going to sing" In about two minutes, I was thinking, Oh how cool, this little boy CAN SING! I mean, to use an old fashioned term, he opens up and "belts out" a song like any great performer. I'm sure he'll have a great career in music.
Now to end, I have to let you know, that I am going to buy your new CD in a few days. I'm really looking forward to it! My taste in music is pretty eclectic, like the rest of my life!
Ive purchased: James Taylor Christmas, Chris Daughtry,
I've downloaded songs from Yahoo Jukebox and paid for them! Which included: Clay Aiken's (most from his new CD - had to get Susie's McNeill's vocals in there!)
several of Bryan Adams
James Taylor and Alison Kraus - How's the World Treating you
Selected songs I liked from Rockstar: Supernova
MiG's Baby I Love Your Way
Some of us are still old school -chuckles- I we have old school kids who we have rubbed off on (my son actually found my stash of albums and found that our turntable still works so he is ALL into listening to stuff on vinyl), so while I think the recording companies who depend on CD sales may run into some money issues I don't think those of us that prefer to buy the entire album..er..cd...will ever totally go away!
I've been replacing some cd's I lost in a house fire so most of mine are 'oldies' such as Phil Collins Greatest Hits, The Eagles Complete Hits stuff, Rod Stewart's Storyteller, etc.
Of course I HAD to replace my Garth Books Sevens cd and all my Eminem -huffs-
yes..yes...all-over-the-map would best describe my musical tastes.
But, let's see what I've got:
iTunes download:
*RENT soundtrack
*Pink - I'm Not Dead album
*Collective Soul - Home (live album)
*Various other songs including some Nelly Furtado, Gorillaz, and of course the BILYW single ;)
CDs in plastic:
*Christina Aguilera - Back To Basics
*Daughtry (self-titled)
*Evanescence - The Open Door (yessss!!!!!)
*Nickelback - All The Right Reasons
And more recently, I've been borrowing some Panic! At The Disco, Green Day and Fall Out Boy CDs from my good buddy Emma. Was kinda forced into it, but listening to the Green Day one made me regret not buying it before she did. ;)
And I'm running to my local Borders on Tuesday to get my MiG fix!!!
Much love, Lizzie
I've bought 17 hard copy cds and downloaded 7 from itunes. I prefer hard copies because I too like to read the booklets. I'll just list a sampling of my puchases ( too lazy to type that many titles)
Hard copy- Jack Johnson - Curious George and On and On
Pat Benatar- Greatest Hits
Bee Gees -Love Songs
Keith Urban- Love, Pain, and the Whole Crazy Thing
John Mayer- Continum
and of course MiG!
download- Yusuf Islam- An Other Cup
Matt Wertz- Somedays
Silly Songs with Larry- Veggie Tales
I mostly buy Vinyl records, the music I dig was meant for a turntable...
At a rough estimate this past year I have purchased around 30-35 CD's and 25 Vinyl 45rpm's and 5 Vinyl LP's.
My last 45rpm I bought was "Automobile" - The Stickshifts, and my last LP bought was "Country Christmas" by Loretta Lynn
Will be buying MiG in 5 more days
I buys CD's for my daughter..Hannah Montana, Vanessa Hudgen, 3 Rascal Flatts
I don't mind downloading, but my pc ain't the greatest...it has it's benefits since you don't have to have every song from one album, especially if you only liked two or three. I still prefer getting them 'the old fashoioned way'. :)

This is the world we live in where the internet really has become the focal point for so many aspects of our lives. With the rapidly decreasing real estate of where to sell music, the internet has become the #1 avenue to sell music. The music industry has never been in such a bad state, and we have to think 'out of the box' to see how we can best serve musicians and music lovers.
As an artist, I beg people not to download illegally, but I cannot stop anyone, nor blame anyone, especially since so much is available for free. To answer Sue S,'s question, artists do get a percentage of money earned from iTunes. But the thing about downloading illegally is that we as artists have no idea of who is actually listening to us, where to concentrate our energies, who to play to, etc. As a breaking artist, I will probably not be making any money from my debut cd anyway, but to know people listen to it, love it, and will buy more music or go to a MiG concert is information that is priceless. If there's a way where illegal downloads can give a count to how much is being downloaded, it would give us artists so much more encouragement and confidence to continue to make music.
Believe me, I'm not preaching. I get some promo cd's from my label, which is kinda the same thing as I get it for free, and I understand how expensive music can be. If I could give my music away, I would, but my label would drop me!!
I am just beginning to understand how this industry works, and I must be crazy to be releasing a cd in this music climate, but I must do this as I have come too far to turn back now.
I hope you enjoy my music. I am truly honoured to be the featured artist on gather.com. I think this community is truly awesome and love being a part of it.
Nickelback - All the Right Reasons
Mylene Farmer - L'autre...
John Mayer - Heavier Things
Bellylicious (I know, I know, but it's fun and has a great beat!)
MiG - Philippines/Australia version and soon the US version
MiG, I agree there are a lot of treasures to be found on CDs that will never be available for download. And you can get more of a glimpse into the artist with a CD. It's a richer experience. People of all ages love your music, and many of us still buy CDs, or will be convinced to, if you made them.
On the other hand, last year I bought CDs of The Doors, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, the Rolling Stones and the Best of the BeeGees. Also bought Classic Jazz, Funk Party, 's70 R&B, Things Are Swingin'- Peggy Lee, The Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions, A Jazz Odyssey - Oscar Peterson, Il Divo, The Ultimate Collection - Michael Jackson, and lots of Rock collections.
Then I stopped buying from BMG, because I wanted to save up for MiG's music. Unfortunately not soon enough to order MiG's Philippine and Australian CDs, but hope to get copies someday. But the MiG CD in the US will have some of his originals on it also. So each version is different.
Only a few more days. I wonder how long it will take for Amazon to get MiGs CDs here. I can't wait to give them to my friends.
I just downloaded these three songs tonigh (and yes, legally!):
Robin Thicke "Lost Without U"
Gym Class Heroes "Cupid's Chokehold"
Marvin Gaye "What's Going On"
My wife was in Honolulu when she learned that Tower Records was holding its big bankruptcy sale, but most of the stuff she would have wanted was already gone by the time she got there. She did manage to snag "Emerson, Lake, and Powell," though, which she had been wanting for some time. I also would recommend to ANYBODY the simpy WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL Grammy-winning "Slack Key Guitar" CDs, both vol 1 and vol 2: some utterly gorgeous stuff there.

Jim Swan's "None-Too-Great Hits" now on iTunes.
I will admit to never having downloaded anything from iTunes - yet! But even without that my iPod is very happy with all the songs currently in it.
It should read
GAME - What CD's having you actually bought this year?
Duh!!
Sorry guys. I love your input on my question. Very interesting.
As long as there are people who love music, there will always be musicians.
I just wish we knew how many people, and who actually does love my music.
Je t'aime
Je t'adore
Quelle vieux mieux encore?
Just realised the 'HAVING'...!! What is wrong with me! Alzheimer's already setting in.
I happened to have passed English with honours...
Honest!
right mig?
but yeah, honour, colour, favourite, etc... proper english, we are not used to it here in America. and I think the reason we don't always notice typo's, even ones as bad as MiG's (lol luv you MiG!) is because our minds seem to fill in the gap.
*hug* :)
No need to stress over one or ten spelling mess-ups, I think the stress is making it worse! ;)
And *I* got an award in English last year. Boo. Ya.
*OMG* Well, look who's txt-talking. ;) hahaha
It doesn't surprise me that you passed English with Honors.
I've been a proofreader since I was 15 and I missed the his instead of this and only saw the having instead of have. But everyone understood what the question was, didn 't they?
And MiG, everyone who hears your music will want to have it and buy it. Remember, don't worry and be happy - it will happen. Your music is as special as you are. I've never heard rock music so beautiful and I still haven't heard the CD only the clips! They should make a classic rock muscial starring you on Broadway.
Queen, did you hear that?
So, I figure, MiG-Debut CD will be the VERY first one that I'll ever have gotten for myself and KNOW the person!
I don't download, I don't have an ipod and probably never will. I like the 'listening experience' and, like you said MiG,....if you don't get ALL the songs on a CD, you could really be missing out on some great stuff!
I remember when the Beattles came out with a 45 (ok,..Don't laugh...I DID buy 45's) I can't even remember th HIT song that I 'bought', but, my friends and I 'discovered' on the flip side "You Can't Sit Down"...well....that was our FAVORITE form that record and not even in the top 100 I don't think until word got out. So, there ya go,...just never know what your tastes can run to when you Don't listen to the 'fad or critic' on what the 'hot' tunes are to just download Those.
We ALL have different tastes and opinions. I want the WHOLE THING and then....WAIT FOR THE SECOND CD from the MiG-ster! :) RM
Thank you for all your responses. I was just curious, honestly.
HAVE A WONDERFUL EASTER EVERYONE!
Always,
MiG
xx
Actually I started out writing most words more like the Bretish than American English, because my parents were Canadian and my grandmother was from Scotland, so I have a most eclectic way of writinga dn write words interchangeably -sometimes like behaviour and sometimes behavior.
I also have a very eclectic CD collection!
Actually words like Tim's spelking make us smile, so I think it is a good thing!
Happy April 10th! You can be sure I will be buying the CD of MiG today!
Last ones I bought were "Seal"--mostly because I loved the way you sang "Kiss From a Rose" and "Leave the Light On" by an old friend of mine named Chris Smither.
I look forward to your NEXT CD with lots of original material.
All the best. I hope to see you perform here in L.A. soon.
As for downloads, I just got an iPod this year, so I've been downloading like crazy and paying for them all. First of all, as a starving artist myself, I would never dream of stealing music. I ain't that poor that I can't flop down a buck for a song I like. Secondly, my profound fear of the PO-lice, and all things jailbird orange, prevents me from breaking the law. LMAO!
"Into the Blue Again" - The Album Leaf
"In a Safe Place" - The Album Leaf
Yours, Of course :D
Kelly Clarkson
Simon Keenlyside "Tales of the Opera"
Nelly Furtado
Rabbit Fur Coat Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins
Comfort of Strangers Orton, Beth
Brandi Carlile [Audio CD] Carlile, Brandi
Cello & Piano Sonatas Volume 1 Beethoven; Zuill Bailey.
There's more I'm sure, but I don't have time right now to dig them out of my e-bay achives. :D
Take Care,
Love,
Wendy J.
As for what I've purchased this year lets see:
newest Shins album
The Kinks (greatest hits kind of thing)
The Birds and the bees (definite chick music- my boyfriend wrinkles his nose at the lyrics)
that may be it- I just recently purchased a new camera so my disposable income is pretty down
future purchase: Modest Mouse- new album sounds fantastic
I only buy hardcopies of CD's a REALLLY REALLY LOVE :) Mostly I do buy off of itunes now.. I listen to the clips and if I like 90% of the CD I'll buy the whole thing of itunes.. if not I'll pick the songs I want..
Here are the list of WHOLE CD's I've bought of itunes this year.
Downhere: "Wide-Eyed and Mystified"
several Harry Connick, Jr cd's
(I thought there would be more but I guess I pick and chose bunches of songs but not many albums..) I've bought many albums off itunes.. just not many THIS year.
CD's I've bought hardopies for THIS year...
Keith Urban - "Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing"
MiG - "MiG" see.. I REALLY REALLY love your CD
Rockstar Supernova
nah it's all good - mostly I just skip over typos and know what they mean .. sometimes don't even realize they are typos at all!
Audioslave
Fall Out Boy
Kaiser Chiefs
The Fray
John Mayer
As a music buyer for all of the Borders stores, (I buy Mainstream Pop -Sarah Mclachlan, Madonna, Jewel, etc.-, Singer/Songwriter -Jack Johnson, John Mayer, etc.-, Dance/Electronica, Soundtracks and Showtunes), it is disheartening to see all of the ITunes responses, but ultimately, as long as music is being enjoyed , I am happy. (jeez, even I download from ITunes)!!!. An interesting fact about ITunes (or digital downloads for that matter) is the number of individual songs downloaded is staggering, but the number of full cd's downloaded is pretty small. Makes me wonder what the music industry will look like in 5 or 10 years. I wonder if artists and/or labels will focus solely on "singles" and will we have shorter cd's. In my book, cd's will still be around for a good while (I pray).
It's great to see all of the posts by music lovers. Keep up the good work. BTW MiG, I am the buyer for your cd!!! Thanks for putting out good work that is easy to sell. :)
A few things currently wearing out my Ipod/cd player are...
Amy Winehouse
Brandi Carlile
The Last Town Chorus (WONDERFUL stuff)
Lucinda Williams
James Morrison
Joan As Police Woman (out soon)
Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (out soon)
Paula Cole (out soon)
Sinead O'Connor (out soon)
Best to all
David
