We just finished sending our new comic book to the printers, so this has been an insanely busy week. Tonight, Gynn is in relax mode, but I have some new deadlines looming. Meanwhile, it's college admission season at the school where I work, so the students are in an exciting time. We have a long weekend for Easter, then another week before our spring vacation, which will be the week where we debut the new comic.
So we're off to Borders in Hyannis MA for writing/drawing tonight. It looks like it will just be the two of us. Various illness and vehicular issues are plaguing the rest of the group.
Last Week's Goals: Get the editorial and the "Supervillain Profile" written and do as much layout as possible. I also need to proof the comic pages that are printed, and we are expecting Miranda to bring some of her latest fiction to be critiqued as well. In between all of that I will be reading and reviewing zines I picked up at the Boston Zine Fair.
Last Week's Results: We ended up bringing a partial script, which we gave a pretty thorough going-over to. I wrote the "Supervillain Profile", but not the editorial (but that got done along with the rest of the comic a few days later). We read and critiqued the first three chapters of Miranda's new fantasy novel, but I didn't end up even pulling out the zines.
This Week's Goals: Get substantial work done on my next story for The Edge of Propinquity (deadline is looming), and read/review the last of the stack of zines in between that.
Question of the Week: What is the most common mistake you catch when you proofread your writing?
I can't decide on one answer, so my top three are 1) Punctuation errors involving quotation marks (I'm generally good with punctuation, but I seem to have a mental block when it comes to this particular set of rules), 2) Verb tense agreement errors (unlike the quotation thing, this is something that I catch pretty easily, but it slips in when I'm rushing or when I take breaks while working on a piece), 3) Word repitition (I like certain words and I usually need a second read-through to make sure I'm not overusing them).
I'd love to hear your feedback. What are you writing tonight? What are your goals? And answer this week's question if you're so inclined. And of course, if you're local, join us in person!
