H.P. died yesterday morning. I did not mourn him though maybe I should have since he has been my companion for the past five years come this May. But the decision had to be made. Over the last several days he has been sputtering away, his pace maker shutting down and then rebooting. I called Gaelic in the city on Saturday and told him my troubles; as before, he told me to hold on and he would come down and assess the situation.
"Mom, there's no hope...you need to pull the plug...HP is going through a painful death!"
"I don't care about his painful death. I'm really irritated with him. In the middle of my Gather sessions, he interupts me. I am in the middle of commenting on some article and his pacemaker stops. I kick him...I pound on him ...and then he sputters some more. How can I Gather, if he is still around? How can I write an article if he eats it up? Just pull the plug...disengage all those wires."
And so the deed was done. HP died and has been shoved into the corner...and off to the Apple Store in Hingham we traveled singing sweet songs all the way. Now Mac has the place of honor where HP used to reside...and HP will go to the landfill tomorrow.

Oh Jan, Plymouth Dump has a recycling center and you pay $15 to turn in old computers, tv's, etc so it's really not going into the landfill...but it sounded good in the story...you know a proper burial for ole HP.
My is flat screen, Cecile...and it has all these do-das at the bottom...all just waiting to be clicked on. I think I'm going to really like having Mac come to live with us. He's a man of culture and refinement.
Guyana Wendy for stopping by...I felt I needed a pacemaker myself last week when HP was "doing his dying"!
Before you dump him in the landfill, I suggest that you post an "Offer" on your local Freecycle group, or Craig's List. You never know if anyone would want it for parts. I have seen plenty of old computers being offered up in my area, and people take them.
Sparten...when you cross pollinate between an Apple and a Dell, what on earth do you get? Super baby graphics?
PS. I just read one of your comments on an article of mine where you said you had been in Spokane many times. How neat!
oh my!!! So you can understand my concern when ole HP kept shutting down.
Oh yes, I've been to Spokane. Mary Thiebes, a girl I taught with at the Mission in '68, came from Spokane (See "Alaska Bound" story). She, along with my room-mate went to Gonzaga. During the early 70's dropped into Spokane several times to see Thiebes. Last year, Thiebes' 22 year old son and a senior at Gonzaga died in an avalanche (See my story "Thirty-eight Years Later".
Lauren...Will Evans is my service guy...though I have to wait for his family visits to the home place...sometimes that could be days if he's really busy.
