The basic concept is to make a word transition into another, by becoming other words in the interim. Each change is brought about by adding or removing one letter to make the word that follows it. For example, consider the word "men". "amen" or "mean" could be formed by inserting an 'a', or "me" by removing the 'n'.
In this puzzle, a list of ten pairs of beginning and ending words is provided. Choose one of these, and then look for a sequence of such word changes to convert the first word into the last. All of these are solvable using fairly common English words.
Be sure to add or take away only one letter per word change. Adding or subtracting two letters requires two steps and the intermediate letter combination must actually be a word.
The intent is for it to take two or more steps to change a letter. However, to make it a little easier, let's allow the changing of a single letter as just one step. Nonetheless, a way to transform the first word into the second without a one-step letter change is to be considered to be a better solution.
None of these problems require forming a two-letter word, although they are permissible. No single-letter words.
Please show a solution for only one combo per post. Also, there might be more than one way to solve each pair, so don't shy away from one just because there it's already been solved; maybe there is a shorter or more efficient way to do it, or a way that doesn't require a letter change in only one step! Conversely, a less direct, more roundabout way is also okay, why not?
As an illustration, here is one way to transform "star" into "pearl":
star >> tar >> tear >> ear>> pear >> pearl
Notice that this example shows two steps to convert "tear" into "pear", effectively replacing the tee with a pee.
