The following was originally published on March 26, to a rather lackluster reception. Because it is the last thing of substance I plan to produce for this site, I will continue to post it at regular intervals, until all those to whom it pertains become aware of it, or until I reach my point goal, whichever comes first. All comments, positive, negative, substantive or filler-fluff are welcome. If you get tired of seeing it here, piling on the comments is the quickest way to get rid of both the article and its author.

Of necessity, writing is a lonely profession, unless you’re collaborating with someone else, in which case it’s both lonely and irritating. Since I opt to work alone, I avoid that particular hazard, but I often have a desire to “talk shop” with others who do this odd thing for a living. Pre-computer, I accomplished this by joining writer's groups, workshops and retreats, as well as keeping in close contact with the agents, publishers and editors who contributed to my livelihood.
Then along came the WWW and my formerly insular universe was suddenly overrun with self-styled writers who wallowed in their newfound ability to see their words (misspelled and banal though they might be) flying through cyberspace, for all the world to see and discuss. I wasted a lot of time early on, seeking message boards, groups and sites with whom I felt a commonality of skill and purpose. Next, the word “blog” entered my consciousness and I jumped on the concept with a vengeance. I added my work to several blogsites, developed a presence and a following and was moderately satisfied until I realized I had lost the adjective in my job title. I was still a writer, but since nobody was paying me for my work, I could no longer call myself “professional”.
I wrestled with this conundrum until one day, in mid-half-nelson, along came Gather. I was apprised that this was a site for professional writers who would receive compensation for their contributions. Such compensation, I was led to believe, was dependent upon both the quality of work and its reception by the intelligent, discerning membership who would read, rate and comment on it.
“Fabulous!” I told myself (writers not only work alone..they also converse with themselves). “I will become part of this creative community. I will write. I will read. I will enjoy the company of my colleagues. I will surround myself with clever, articulate people to stimulate and be stimulated in return. I will be their Parker; they will be my Benchley; together we will frolic amid our witty badinage, trading quips as we share our divergent views of the world. This Gather must, indeed, be a writer’s paradise!”
And it was, until I became aware of the facts. First, I discovered that the promised “compensation” actually had nothing to do with quality. Rather, it was based on some secret, impenetrable formula that dealt entirely in quantity, or the accrual of “gatherpoints”. As soon as this became apparent to the world at large, Gather morphed from “a site for writers” to a site for the greedy, the venal, the untalented, the unoriginal and the uncreative.
What had been a goldmine of intelligent discourse, clever repartee, and excellent prose became, almost overnight, a garbage dump for the no-talent, simple-minded, semi-literate, shameless carrion-eaters who now flock to the site for the sole purpose of robbery by fraud. They fill the pages with misspelled, ungrammatical non-content, gleefully flaunting their success in amassing money and points from a complacent management. Gather has become a giant piñata and all the kids in the “special” class are beating it to shreds, grabbing all the goodies they can before it collapses around all our heads.
In view of this state of affairs, a handful of us took a few days off to observe what, if any, difference the absence of actual writing would make. For an answer I looked at the “most discussed” list during the boycott period. Would you be surprised to learn that it had NOT ONE SINGLE ARTICLE that contained anything remotely resembling “creative writing”?
No, I was not surprised, either. After all, I know where most of the real writers went. The question is: will I let the slack-jawed weasels chase me off for good? My answer: not just yet. There are still a few laughs to be had, a few people of wit and intellect to whom I can relate and, mostly, a few more “payments” outstanding. Until I feel too suffocated by the stench of offal, I’ll stay and play. It's up to you how long my tenure will be.

Your observations duly noted [lol] and sincerely hope I don't particularly fall into the categories you so aptly describe [well, let's face it sometimes I do]. I know the frustration though. You might be interested in my article, "Gather Wars Blowback."
Btw, I've never given a hoot about points or Starbucks coupons, but will come back and comment again. This should be good!
I've "met" some good people and good writers as a result of the contest, which is great. But there does seem to be a whole other side to this site (including right-wingers who downrate politics they don't like), and the whole "points" system still confuses me. All of this Darwinian competition is essentiallly about coupons?
See the above article for an example of how promises are kept around here.
More points for you, Dusty.
Hehehe.......................!
What do you think of dem apples???
I never expected to make any significant money here. I was a fairly early joiner, and they gave us these nebulous points, but no value had been assigned. I always figured that they would be like Crackerjack box surprises...not worth much. I was surprised that I was able to cash in enough to get some Barnes & Noble gift certificates that saved me a couple hundred bucks last Christmas...much more than I would ever have expected to get out of Gather participation. Of course that was over a year's worth of points accumulation.
My problem with Gather is not the lack of remuneration. It's the lack of interest in serious writing. The things that seem to attract the most comments (and points, probably) are...well, I won't enumerate. Let's just say there is no creative writing skill involved at all. Whatever it is, Gather is no longer a site for writers, if it ever was.
I saw "clicking for points" somewhere in one of the threads -- don't ask me whose -- though they may have been using it in the sense that the ads pay for the whole shebang and if while you're cashing in you starbuck's coupons you're in the mood for a new mortgage, why not?
Seriously, I have no idea and wondered if those of you who write seriously have ever seen anything that spells out the remuneration arrangement. I haven't and I just got flagged for something and was sent a copy of the TOS, or rather it popped up on my screen. It's one of those contracts where they get a thousand percent of everything and the other side gets a thousand percent of not much. I could see anything where it says how they figure it out -- the coupons, etc.
I don't know how long you have been around Gather, but if you haven't seen a significant change in the quality of the writing in the past six months, you have not been paying attention. Many, many good writers have left. Whether you like Dame Ruth's attitude or not, go read some of her stuff. You might learn something about writing. I have learned a lot from her. If she leaves, it will be Gather's loss...and mine...and yours.
YOU NOW HAVE YOUR WRITING SITE AND NO LONGER NEED TO CONSTANTLY SPAM GATHER ABOUT HOW TERRIRBLE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY NOT DO THAT??????????
OH YEA......YOU ARE JUST ALL ABOUT POINTS AND MAKING MONEY....SO IN LIEU OF A WRITER'S SITE YOU WANT POINTS AND MONEY
OK......KEEP COMPLAINING THEN......
You state yourself that you are sticking around for the points, and who can blame you. I've got nearly enough giftcards for a really nice microwave from Home Depot, myself.
But why does everyone else who enjoys posting here, have to be "putdown" in such a derogatory manner? Why NOT just set up your own private Gather Group, and ignore everyone you don't deem worthy?
Bert, Travis.: Thanks for coming to the defense of this old damsel. Not necessary, but appreciated, nonetheless.
Jeannie: I thought "volias" were like moles, only bigger.
It would have been so easy to prevent. Simple infrastructure changes, simple application of rules in an evenhanded manner, simple technologies could have totally changed the picture.
MySpace for grownups? For how long until it's just MySpace by another name?
I probably won't make my point goal, since I've been mostly gone for quite some time now. But here's 1/2 one or so toward your goal.
May you find success in whatever your next endeavor. I hope to run into you again one day.
Mark Y.,why would anyone trust your judgment or consider your challenge when it is obvious that you didn't recognize great writing when you read this article? I guess you made your statement without doing any investigation. Ruth has made her living writing, and if you had checked what she has published on this site, you would probably have guessed that. If you are the expert your comment leads me to believe you think you are, anyway.
When Amber enters a conversation, it's like someone farted. Everyone just turns away and pretends they don't notice, but the stink is still there.
What children of the writing world? The clap trap being put out there now hardly qualifies, and when someone truly does try it gets buried under all the rubbish.

I suppose this part disturbs me for one reason. How did you come to your conclusion? And when was your boycott? You see some of us, myself in particular, may not fall under your classification of someone worth reading but I do and haved posted several creative writing things since I've joined. Go figure..only one of them recieved a comment..and yet everywhere I look on this site all I hear is how real writers are upset at what is posted. Perhaps more 'real' writers would post more of their work if they even knew it was being read. I didn't come here for the point, could give a spit in the ocean about the points actually..I came here because it is a place to post my work that I take seriously even if it doesn't meet someone else's standards, and because there are many interesting folks here and I enjoy learning the opinions of others on a great many topics that interest me.
So, I suppose the number of my questions is now four. Are you here to belittle other writers or help them? Or are you here only to be read and participate in discussions with other writers who are on what you feel is, your level of writing capability?
Sandy:I know you always have my back, as a fellow professional and good friend. Needless to say, that goes both ways.
As for your other questions, 4) I am here neither to belittle nor help other writers. When I offer critique or editing suggestions, I am paid to do so; I seldom offer my services gratis. And 5) Yes, of course, I prefer to read and engage in discussions with my peers. I find no gratification in engaging in juvenile games or ignorant conversations, although I do admit to a certain enjoyment in occasionally deflating some of the pompous, self-satisfied dimwits who delude themselves into believing they can write. (This has nothing to do with you, this being the only place I have encountered your name, so please don't take it personally). If you have further questions, I'll be happy to address them.
Four and Five were my own personal curiosity and I thank you for answering those as well. No worry on my taking it personally, I generally assume that 'you' is used collectively and not specifically unless the opposite is pointed out.
I appreciate your opinions and your standing behind your belief even if I don't completely agree.
Have a wonderful week!
Sort of like the stuff your fellow blacked out compadre Bongo Mirror publishes (remember his articles about Monkey Poo and Beating Grandmas??????????)

I've read you Dame Ruth, and admired you almost from the instant I arrived. It's quite a shame to see that you are leaving. (I wonder if any of those who are confused have read you, or perchance even Googled your name?) You've been quite the inspritation to me. I thank you for however many reposts it takes.
And those of you who wish to quibble over ideals might wish to do a bit of research right here on Gather. The problem isn't complicated. There are solutions everyone could live with.
The problem is, no one is listening.
