Outside the attic window,
a bird flew against the glass;
not hurt, he flapped again and chirped.
Up the attic stairs, thunderous steps
the sound of one hundred elephants, times two;
it was only Mao, the tuxedo and his brother, Cheddar, the orange tabby,
come to claim their dinner territory.
Poised on the narrow balustrades at top of attic staircase,
each feline stood, delicately perched, tippy toes, all four;
Mao yelped plaintively and swiped under the crack
between the air conditioner and the window.
"Birdie, birdie, I know you're out there. I can see you,
hear you; I want to touch you, feel you, eat you. Yum."
Cheddar joined Mao in the futile hunt for the bird trapped
outside the window. Cheddar sqeaked: "I'm too big for
this balustrade. I want to swipe, but fear I might fall off. I feel so frustrated."
Seeing a 6-foot drop on carpeted stairs, I did not fear the worst for
either bird or cats. The normally lazy, somnolent kitties reared
their ugly, beasty heads. This is their territory, they can handle the
consequences.
Mao swiped again, gurgling a low Meow. Cheddar swiped, too.
In my mind's eye, I saw Mao and Ched tip to one side of the balustrade
and fall down 6 feet of stairs, disgruntled and shamed they could not
achieve their King of the Jungle Hunter status today.
I opened my eyes to see Mao and Cheddar resolute in their stance,
firm in their resolve, waiting a long moment until bird gets bored
(or frightened) and flies away.
Determined to put them out of their misery, I walked into the kitchen
and opened a can of 9 Lives Beef with Slices.
Thunderous steps, the sound of one hundred elephants, times two.
Mao bubbled Meows in a series, Cheddar squeaked three times.
I was treated to a chorus of the Cats' Fancy, twice this morning.

That sounds like an interesting start to the day.
this morning at dawn as I opened the door,
No Fancy Feast or Nine Lives for her
But my friend on the forthesia tree is no more.
Deborah, Generally, we feed them Purina One Indoor Formula dry food. I checked all the FDA and Menu Foods recalls. Nine Lives is not on any list.
Thanks Barney, Laurun, Kim, Lloyd!!! Nina.
I'm here! I'm here! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kathryn, what a vibrant and beautiful ode to your little sweeties! Give them a scritch behind the ears for me. : )

Well written. Loved reading it, Kathryn.
Kiki also gets the Purina Indoor (and an occasional mouse that is foolish enough to invade HER home). She doesn't eat them though, just plays with and then puts in by the toilet for mama to take care of!
Mao is now demanding to be fed DRY food. Imagine, he was not happy with half a can of 9 lives, half to his brother.
Barney, and all it taks is ONE to sound like a thundeirng herd. Karen and Ginger, oh yeah.
Sharon, at least Kiki puts the half dead or dead mice by the toilet and not under your BED!
Thanks Jess, Vijay and daniela !!!
About the pet food recall - I woud stay away from ANY supermarket food that contains wheat gluten, including dry food. The recall gets bigger by the day, and in general, grain products aren't good for cats. For those interested, check out http://catinfo.org - for details on cat nutrition. For the recall, http://www.itchmo.com has been really on top of the controversy.
There are plenty of high-quality brands available in pet stores - Wellness, Innova, Merrick, others which I can't remember right now, that are safe to feed. These use "human quality" ingredients" and stay away from additives and by-products. They cost more, but in the long run they will probably save you a lot of vet bills and heartache. Of course this isn't true for all animals; some will thrive no matter what you feed them. But it's worth it to me.
It is definitely possible to home-cook food for your cats and dogs, you just need to know what their nutritional requirements are. Cat's for example need taurine. But you can certainly cook high-quality foods for your animals that will meet their needs.
Thanks all for enjoying your kitties.

Lisa F., thanks for the info. I'll check that out and also will check Purina One and 9 Lives. I had a cat, Emma Peel, who lived for 20 years on Friskies Wet food. I did not know cats need Taurine.
Florence, Orph sounds adorable. Love Carl Orff.
Thanks Carol, Lisa, Florence, donna h., Trav !!! Cortney, Robin, Cecile,
and Pat M., thanks for the info. I will check out the Aussie birds. Went to the zoo-or park in Brisbane center and saw the Kookaburra (heard him loud and clear, too) as well as other fine Oz feathered friends.

In 1992 I visited the home of Anne Rivers Siddons to interview her for an article I was writing. The sign in her driveway said "Cat Crossing," so I expected to see at least a few felines inside. It turned out she had four (plus two semi-tame raccoons which wandered in as they pleased). After the interview she and her husband, Heyward, introduced me to each of the cats. One was named Buckley "because he leans to the right," as Hayward put it. I told them I had one cat, a black semi-longhair female I'd been given the previous fall, on the day Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court, and had named her Anita Hill. The author then weighed in with her advice. "If you have a cat named Anita Hill, you must always call her by her full name," she said in quite a serious tone. When I'm addressing the now nearly 16-year-old cat directly, I try to follow that advice.
Leonard, a DELIGHTFUL story. Mao (Magic Oleski) and Cheddar Oleski would be pleased to know of this. I'd tell them, if I thought I'd have a hair's chance in hell.
I had an Emma Peel !!! from 1972 to 1992. Never thought the cat my Chicago boyfriend got me for my 21st birthday would live to know my kids, and they, her.
Musts check your profile.
Jennifer, the great Cat God designed a perfect being.
Ed, yes - our two boys have appeared in other segments. I've never seen cats do what they did, though.
Yes cats can be a ton of fun!
