The Great Haagen Dazs Dispute
Sometimes I tend to be my worst enemy. I do things that will ultimately cause one or more of my health maladies to act up. I am lactose intolerant, I have IBS, plus my body does not assimilate calcium, as it should so it turns to kidney stones.
Months ago, while shopping at Wal-Mart, I happened to spot some Haagen Dazs Mayan Chocolate icecream in the pint sized container. I had never tried that flavor, but it sounded so good. Real chocolate with just a touch of cinnamon, a combination to die for, or at least suffer agonizing cramps for. I watched it for several weeks, and it just wouldn't go away. Each time I went to Wal-Mart, I was drawn to the icecream aisle and there it would be staring at me, whispering my name.
I decided to logically think it through. Icecream, not good for lactose intolerant conditions; chocolate, a trigger for IBS; dairy products, calcium, not good for kidney stones.
I rushed immediately to Wal-Mart and bought a pint.
As soon as I had bought it and was in the truck, driving toward home, reason returned. This was not a wise choice. I would have taken it back right then, but I had already ripped the top off the container and was licking the icecream like a lollipop.
Not a big deal, I'll just eat a few bites everyday, not enough to stir up my little raggy body. The first pint didn't count; it was the test pint, the pint to see if I really liked that flavor. Eating the whole pint was not the end of the world; I could burn off the calories scrubbing the chocolate stains off the steering wheel, out of the upholstery, the windshield, door handle, and my clothes. All in all it had worked out pretty well.
After Hell night with the IBS, I was pretty sure I would NEVER eat chocolate or any dairy products again.
The next week I made it home without opening it the truck. I thought that was real progress. I maintained my *snicker* self-control and fell into a routine where I would sometimes indulge my cravings, and sometimes not.
Then disaster struck! As I went to purchase my daily, er, I mean weekly pint of icecream; I spied on the price sticker delete. I was dumbstruck! How could this be? It had to be a mistake. I found a salesclerk, and pointed out the sticker on the freezer shelf. She confirmed my worst fears. They were going to indeed stop carrying my favorite flavor. It was the vendor's decision, not Wal-Mart, she assured me. I borrowed her black sharpie and wrote DO NOT above the word DELETE.
I phoned the manager over frozen foods the next day and he confirmed what the clerk had told me. He had seen my note on the sticker and agreed to leave it for the vendor.
The next time I went back the sticker and the icecream, and the manager was gone. I again called the manager who agreed to talk to the vendor about the dangers of standing between a woman and her chocolate.
This of course did no good, so I decided to email Haagen Daazs. This is their response:

Dear Ms. Roberts,
Thank you for your email indicating your disappointment with the difficulty
you experienced in trying to locate HÄAGEN-DAZS(r) Mayan Chocolate Ice
Cream. We realize that being unable to find your favorite HÄAGEN-DAZS(r)
flavor can be really frustrating!
We would like to make all our products, flavors, and package sizes available
for all our consumers at every store in the country; unfortunately, we are
constrained by the freezer space available in most grocery stores. We have
alerted our distribution center in your area that you are on the look-out
for HÄAGEN-DAZS(r) Mayan Chocolate Ice Cream at Wal-Mart on Cassville,
Missouri. Our route salesperson will make every effort to stock it, if
authorized at that store, on his next visits.
Please watch for our follow-up response to arrive shortly by U.S. Mail,
along with some coupons for future purchases and a current flavor list. We
appreciate your interest in our company and the time you have taken to
contact us.
Sincerely,
Donna Tocci

I am wondering about the phrase: "Our route salesperson will make every effort to stock it, if
authorized at that store, on his next visits."
Is it Wal-Mart or is it the vendor.
As I sit here, eating my Breyer's All Natural Chocolate Icecream, completely devastated, I wonder who should I email next? Wal-Mart Corporate Offices, or should I take another swipe at Haagen Dazs.

Good luck with your ice cream dilema. Which reminds me of my latest diet: The Haagan Dazs diet. Here's how it works; 20 minutes before dinner, eat a pint of Haagan Dazs ice cream and you won't eat as much for dinner. Good plan? Probably not. Fun? Definitely!
The next closest store is about 15 miles I think. Their prices are higher than this Walmart, which is something else that ticks me off. I am so sick of the prices going up, I have been taking the item to the service department, and saying "See this item, I wont be buying it anymore since you raised the price." It does no good but makes me feel better. And of course I am nice to the people because I know it isnt their fault, they actually seem to enjoy it.
My daughter worked there for 5plus years and they all know her and me, so they know what to expect.
Elizabeth, I feel your pain. You have some really nice friends! I make it a point to stand in front of the freezer when the manager is there. I stare at him and usually vacates quickly!
Thanks Charles, They will know they've been in a fight!
Karen, The withdrawal is torture. I'm glad they have your brand where you live. Thanks for commenting.
Ginger, I have to walk a tightrope on the foods I can eat. One has to rebel from time to time. I always swear I wont fudge again, but my determination goes away with the pain, hohoho Thanks for the info.
Not sure what your IBS is caused from (mine was from Ulcerative Colitis - if you have Crohn's I don't think this works) but it seems there used to be something you could take before eating the 'forbidden fruit' that would help with the lactose intolerant part - lactase??? something.
Have you looked into frozen yogurts - they are yummy and NO aftereffects.
Black Cherry Mackinaw Fudge (don't know the brand, wasn't around long enough to learn, and carton was too ripped up to read)
Sharon, I am on meds for IBS and I take the lactose tablets. But if you eat a trigger food, the IBs will make you pay.
Thanks James, I think that is a great idea, I'll write to both of them! PB and chocolate sounds good!
Thanks Linda, beware it is addictive!
Carol, you and my daughter! strawberry anything. I like strawberries too. Thanks for commenting.
Louise, I will keep my dialog with both companies very active:) Thanks for your comment Louise
I haven't worked in frozen foods in five years, though, so they may have gotten more obnoxious - but in general, Wal-Mart managers like to claim they can add anything if there's sufficient demand. Oh, and if the frozen foods department manager doesn't help / isn't there, ask for the store manager. If 'he isn't around right now', ask for his business card and/or phone number, or the contact information for their market manager. In short, b**** to high heaven.
I am an ice cream snob, only like certain kinds. I used to like Blueberry Delight by Steve's. Alas, it is no more....Dreamery makes a Coney Island Waffle Cone ice cream to die for...
Roxanne, I guess I am a snob, or esle I am spoiled, I want the kind I want, and resent the fact the my request was a brush-off. Thanks!
You have just given me a new phrase " raggy" body. Because I certainly have one! You can't have "Calcuim". And I must have more, they took out my Thyroid and the gland that produced calcium for the body. They want me to take 10, 600mg. pills of calcuim a day. I 'm not supposed to have salt because I have had two heartattacks and have high-blood pressure. But when they tell you what you can't have it just make's you want it more. Good Luck on finding your "Ice Cream".
Charlene, I know just what you are saying. They took half off my thyroid due to a tumor, I have been diagnosed with graves also. i need calcium because I have osteoporosis, but the calcium goes to kidney stones. I also have sponge kidney, cant take any of the meds for osteoporosis so it is a juggling act! I have low bloood pressure. But you are certainly correct, When they say you cant have it you want it more.:) Thanks for your comments!
I found another frozen foods clerk and he said yep the manger saw me and ran. He said perhaps it had been discontinued, I whipped out my letter from Haagen Dazs. I then offered to buy a six pack, he said he would look into it. I thanked him and told him to tell the manager he was going to get damn cold hiding in the freezer everytime I come in. Then I smiled sweetly and said "Never come between a woman and her chocolate." He was laughing and promised to pass it on. I told him I would see him tomorrow :)
Now if they continue to keep their word, I wont have to!
I wonder if you can order it directly from the company, if Walmart won't come through? Or another grocery store chain?
I can't eat ice cream- lactose intolerant but with me it just won't stay down! No point ;)
that inspired me to start a group called ConsumerComplaints
