The beloved Department of Homeland Suppression has handed down their new proposals for the Domestic Identity Papers they have been mandated to force upon us. They have greatly watered down their proposals because of a wide spread rebellion by the states but we are by no means safe from the suppressors yet. See the article, (which is much nicer and more politically correct than this one by the way) DHS Issues Proposed Regulations for Real ID Act to see where things stand now.
The proposal now is barcodes instead of RFID chips, apparently so we will at least know when we are being spied on, and no Federal data base of the information open to every White House flunky who wanted to stalk someone. The plan now will insert a state level flunky between the DHS and our data.. No court involved, of course, just a brave and stalwart state bureaucrat who will surely see that the data is not misused. Oh my, I feel so much better!
They still propose to collect the following on everybody (well at least everybody who wants a drivers license): “full legal name, address, digital photograph, gender, date of birth, signature, document number and machine-readable technology “ plus it would be nice but “does not require a State to collect fingerprints, iris images, or other biometric data in connection with obtaining a license and has no plans to serve as a repository for the face images the states will collect." (Bold is my emphasis. Apparently they do have plans for serving as a repository for ' fingerprints, iris images, or other biometric data' collected by the states.)
What is very interesting to note is that all this is being done to avoid a repeat of something like 9/11/2001 and yet those terrorists did not enter the country under false papers, ...even the ones on the terrorist watch list came in under their own names.
And if they are not going to require anything more than the states already do for drivers where is the gain? I go to the Drivers License office, I tell them I am John Doe. I live at 2222 Back Street, Miami, Fl. I was born July 7th, 1952. I am male. I never had a license before because I never drove. I sign and I get my picture taken. What the heck are they going to check? I take the training, I take my test and I get my license.. And not a word of it need be true except that I do rent the place at 2222 Back Street, Miami. And given that they get hundreds of applications a week how likely it is that they would ever check that?
All that information does not catch crooks who planned all along to break the law. It only bothers those who decided to break the rules and go 'illegal' at some later date or who found that the rules were changed to make them 'illegal' at some later date..
All in all a fine boondoggle for the profiteers of terrorism and a fine little power gain for “we gotta control the rabble' folks.

This is not a totally done deal as yet but, like you, I am afraid that it is on the way! Somehow the federal should be stopped from forcing states to do by withholding money or other considerations, when it is not the federal prerogative to do it directly. In this case the federal government will render each state's driver's licenses worthless for ID and try to develop acceptance of the system.
But this is no different that the withholding of funds to make the states require seat belts, establish certain speed limits, etc. at the behest of the federal government. This one does differ in that instead of withholding money, it will actually cost the states money to comply! That, hopefully, will be our salvation in this matter. A rose, by any other name, would smell the same, and the same can be said for fascism!
