As part of an "experiment" I'm conducting concerning posts on Gather; the entire explaination can be found in my post "Here We Go Again - It's Always Something"; here is Question #1......
1. What was your favorite high school CLASS; not subject?
Mr. Pope.....it was a civics class, but we did some laughing in that class. He was so funny, he was bordering stupid, and we never did any work. I know I am lazy....what can I say??LOL
Health Occupations because I was going to go into nursing, but then I had my son when I was 17. Still graduated honor student plus got an A+ in Health Occup. Good to see you Rob! :O)
Sister Anne's American Literature. She had polio as a child and walked with crutches so we called her the dinosaur. (I know, kids are mean) Anyway, she would really engage her classes. I will never forget part of that Robert Frost poem ....."miles to go before I sleep...." Also she had a phrase, "Chew and Digest this", which meant not just to read it and get it over with, but to understand it. (Hey that may be part of why she got that nickname!)
I hated high school, too, but I did have a favorite CLASS---Mr. Rosen's class, because all my friends were in it. And because though we were studying algebra which can get pretty dry, he made it fun.
My favorite high school class was English III. We did practically nothing, had a blast with the teacher, and made lifelong friends. When something bad happened that affected the whole school, we always seemed to be in English III. When something really cool happened, we were in English III. Plus, that was the class where I got to see my first pair of "man thongs". The honor goes to Ricky who was facinated with trying to embarrass me by showing me his underwear. Now that I look back, maybe the cutest boy in school was flirting with me...hmmmm...LOL! High school was a blast!
Miss Driscoll's Creative Writing AKA 13th Period Funny Farm. Miss Driscoll was a bit, shall we say?, odd...if the class got out of control, she would sit in front of the open supply closet and stare at it....She got me interested in Apocalypse, though. Jr Sr High School literary magazine...
My favorite part of high school was the bell that said it was time to go home. But I also enoyed my 10th grade biology class because I had a wonderful teacher who cared more about kids than about power.
Hmmm, I must have read this wrong. I thought you meant Fresh, Soph, Jr., Sen. Class. So, I'm answering both. Senior year was my favorite year. My favorite class was ceramics. The art teacher was a hippie and let us do whatever we wanted. You wouldn't believe how many bongs were created that semister. And I made a bowl for my mom. LOL
Social Studies, junior year of high school, an experimental class that took a few decades at a time and studied the history, literature, art and music of the time, and learned how each had affected the other. For instance, for the 1920's, we studied the Great Gatsby, jazz, prohibition, and disscussed the impact WW I had had on all that. We also all partied together, and every Monday, our teacher set aside the lesson to discuss the party we were sure to have had the weekend before, who was 'zooming' who, the impact of our stupid choices under the influence of adult beverages, and life in general. I learned how our times influence everything around us. I learned to see that what we write, and what we like in literature are affected by the times in which we are living. It connected everything.
My favorite class was Shakespeare. It was taught by a very tiny, white-hair lady, who was named Gwen Holly Simpson. She had been a radio actress and she was tough. It was back in the 70s not real long after the Watt's riots and one of the things that the African-American boys had taken to doing was wearing knit hats on their heads and fluffing out their afros on the bottom. Which meant that when they took their hats off, they had a funny looking "do." She insisted every young man in class needed to be a gentleman and stood up to some very tough characters when she told them that they could either leave class or take off their hats. That might not seem that tough to some, but during my first 2 years at school, we had had several mini race riots with people being "razor-bladed" in the hallways and with the hiring of several guards, etc. And, yes, she would sit on anyone of any color if they didn't behave. It wasn't a race thing. She thought everyone should be treated equal. Since white guys couldn't wear hats, neither could Asians, Hispanics, or African-Americans.
Once she got that issue settled on the first day, we took off into a world of Medieval Magic. She taught us how to read Shakespeare and we all had a great time learning to make the parts come alive. She helped us to see how the situations Shakespeare talked about relate to our own lives. And she truly cared about the students. She would check up on us, making sure everything was fine at home. When she thought you were having a hard time, she'd let you know she suspected so and would encouraged you and support you through it. She was absolutely wonderful!
I actually enjoyed pretty much all of my classes. Yes, I was a dork. :-) Although I think Honors French IV was pretty cool with all the french food we got to make and bring in to eat.
Mr. Aken's 9th grade English Class. He stood on his desk and recited Shakespeare. One time as he was yelling out "Friends, Romans and Countryman lend me your ear" the principal walked in and just stood there with his mouth hanging open. Mr. Willis then said,"Mr. Aken's I need to see you in the hall a minute." The whole class busted out laughing.
Shop- I took law enforcement. I got to have fun beating up Mr. Spar pro. *a training dummy* for self defense and we did various other things in the class.
Oh that is a toughy... But I guess I would say my Junior English class that was taken my senior year... There are others that run up close behind it... but that class was great due to the teacher...
My favorite class? German. I took it for three years in high school. I always had an ear for languages,plus the teacher,Mr. (Herr) Holton,was extremely popular with the kids-including me. I'll never forget him.
My favorite class was Biology with Ms Thompson. It was a huge class of about 70, and she was very strict. She covered a lot of material, and I drank in every bit of it.
Sophomore English Lit, when we read "Great Expectations." I can still remember Mr. Schaeffer imitating "Aged P" and getting me so interested that I went on to read a lot more Dickens.
I really really loved Livestock Science. The teacher whose name I can't remember was super cool. We learned about animals, large animals, farm animals specifically. Cows, sheep, well horses too. the subject was great, the teacher was cool. Joined Future Farmers of America in it too and showed a lamb at the Kern County Fair. It's almost the only good memories that I have of high school
I took a acoustic guitar class my senior year. I built up callouses on my fingers and everything. My guidance counselor was quite upset since he felt I should be taking Physics instead. I'm not a guitar player today, but it was one of the best things I did for myself in high school.
I did this whole thing backwards. Whew last question. Next time you could think about putting links from one article to the next somehow. Favorite class? Subject? My favorite class was my Senior Class. Hooray. Favorite classroom class was Assembly Training.
Leadership we did alot of fun activities to learn how to be a leader and how to work in groups. We went to a camp for a field trip and did activities that required everyone to work together. also Health 10 we did a lot of different activities in there also.
Graphic Arts Class...finding our inner creativity thru that class was enlightening! It also opens your eyes to so many more things that many people don't even see day to day.
I've noticed so many of you have mentioned that it's the teacher that made the class memorable. If you get the opportunity, you should tell them that. God only knows they get so little, and, clearly, they give so much.
