For the last two or three years, my sister and I have been living two lives. When we're home we have relatively normal lives with family, TV, time on the computer, work, and sometimes a little fun. When we get involved with my aunt's problems in Wisconsin, things get very strange. It's like a whole different world, and I've been reluctant to write about some of the things that have happened up there partly because I'm not entirely sure anyone would believe me.
Here's an example. During the period between the death of my cousin David in late 2001 and the death of my uncle in early 2005, David's farm was vacant much of the time. My older sister Wilma and her husband Red, both retired (very early retirement--lucky dogs) and winter Texans, stopped by twice every year and stayed at David's house for a couple of weeks with my aunt and uncle's permission.
One evening during one of those visits my sister was washing dishes in front of the kitchen window. It was dark out, and Wilma didn't see one of my uncle's cows which had wandered out onto the highway until a van hit the cow. The van stopped abruptly when when it hit nearly a thousand pounds worth of cow. An 18-wheeler which was apparently speeding and following too close, had to take the other lane to avoid the van. Then it had to take the ditch on the wrong side of the road to avoid an oncoming car. The truck rolled on its side and skidded along the road ditch, coming to rest not far from a big propane tank in David's front yard.
The oncoming car escaped without a scratch, but not quite unscathed. The cow had been standing facing the van, which meant that the other end was aimed directly at the oncoming car. You can probably figure out what came out of that other end and had to be hosed off of the poor woman's car. As I said in the title, not quite BS but close.
Things could have gone a lot worse. The cow died, which was sad, but astonishingly enough no one in the van or the truck was seriously hurt. My aunt is still facing two lawsuits over the incident.
