Article on Obesity...

thanks for writing this important issue..this is a national health crises for america and people need to take steps to stay healthy

I agree with bhumika. They say that it is getting up there in the top 3? since it causes heart disease. I've been readin on it for quite some time. I am sorry, I must have missed your article yesterday.

Teenage/childhood obesity makes me sick. I blame the parents. When I see a parent with an obese child I want to shake them and slap them (the parents that is). It is the parents responsibility to teach their children how to be a human being. That includes hygiene, social skills, learning to drive, the importance of education. And of course the importance of diet and exercise. Not everyone needs to be an olympian, not everyone will have a six pack, but we can all try to be healthy if we get direction from our parents first.

James what about the parents who just don't know because they themselves were never taught? I was overweight as a child. Not because my parents didn't love me and want the best for me, but because they themselves were overweight and had come from overweight parents. Back then they weren't taught about proper nutrition and such. Can we blame parents such as mine just as easily? I don't think so. Luckily my kids live in a different era where knowledge is more readily available so I am able to teach them better than I learned in hopes they will do the same someday for their children. I believe obesity, like alcoholism, is a cycle, and that someone amid the generations has to stand up and stop it from continuing to ratate. I have fought my weight my entire life. I am trying to keep my children from being forced to fight the same battles.

I am a teenager and I was very interrested in this conversation. I am not overweight. It is hard when you see someone who looks so much better than you think you are. You feel the need to go to the guy and work off that "baby fat" that you still have. I also agree with the article and I think that we spend to much time eating food and watching tv than having fun and enjoying the outdors. i play soccer year round but that doesnt mean that I am in the best of shape in the winter. I am not super skinny but I am not fat either. I am 5 foot 2 and weigh 125 lbs. I think once this damn snow goes away all of us teens should get out and enjoy the spring with outdoor games and barbeques(spelling?). Thank you for this article I enjoyed it.
