IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED START ANOTHER WAR ?
There are persistent and growing indications - imagined and real - that the U.S. and who knows who else - are preparing to attack Iran in the near future. I imagine most who read this will probably write off this prospect as outlandish. Why this scoffing response would be perfectly understandable is painfully obvious:
- There are probably only two people in the world that believe we are winning the war in Iraq: President Bush, and Vice President Cheney.
- Polls, popular opinion, critical opinion, weigh in on the speculation that the Bush presidency may be noted in future generations as the absolute worst one in American History. If Bush is interested in a admirable legacy he best radically change the direction of his initiatives.
- The Democrats on the surface have regained control of the congress and are expected to start blocking Bush's 'adventurism.'
- On a daily basis the press throws in our faces the scary news that out military forces are stretched dangerously thin. HOw under such conditions could we even fantasize about opening yet another front.
- Our armed forces lack vital equipment.
- The morale has to be low due to the fact that the same troops that have been employed are reemployed over and over again.
- There is a slight problem with Russia and China probably not welcoming a U.S. attack.
- Word that Syria, Lebanon, Hamas rearmed to the teeth with an even greater capacity to blow the whole of Israel to bits and who may love the idea of a 'justified' pretext to start the extinction of the Jewish state once the U.S. attacks Iran.
- The so called insurgency is not stopping the daily slaughter in the unnamed 'civil' war between the various factions in Iraq.
- The majority of public opinion, reinforced by the recent congressional vote to impose a timeline for withdrawal of our troops clearly indicates that most Americans are war weary having little desire to passively watch as the Iraqi meat grinder indefinitely chew up more manpower and national treasure in this seemiongly no win political black hole.
Given the above facts - most sensible people would likely conclude that the idea let alone the action of attacking Iran in the near future is totally outlandish, illogical, counter intuitve, unaffordable, and a number of other limiting terms. I would like to concur that this idea defies conventional linear logic. However this judgement assumes that the wise people who rule our country and make the truly significant decisions are indeed exponents of linear logic.
So what supports the notion that an attack on Iran may be near at hand? First the speculation, then the facts:
- I heard a disturbing psychic on Coast to Coast Radio last night predicting that Iran would be attacked by the US as early as April, 7th of this year. He claims to be a psychic who also has the ear of a number of important people who shower him with vital inside information. According to him we - that is the present leadership of President Bush and Company - have had Iran in our sites as part of the grand scheme to impose our authority over that part of the world. He indicated that the U.S. as pin pointed over 200 locations to bomb on an initial air-strike and has a name picked out for the attack.
- The motives for imposing our power over Iran is based on the assumption of wide spread dissatisfaction with the extreme Mullah control and the bet that if we attack the dissidents will back us up.
- He also said that the chief motive for attacking Iran is oil.
So much for speculation. Now for the facts:
- Notice today's New York Times on page A9 headlined: "U.S. OPENS NAVAL EXERCISE IN PERSIAN GULF". It part it reads: "In a calculated show of force, the United States Navy began a major exercise in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday, a move that Bush administration officials said was part of a broader strategy to contain Iranian power in the region.... The exercise was clearly intended to send a signal that even with its forces stretched thin by the Iraq war, the United States still has the military means to project power in the region.
- The report adds: " Iran has been trying to send a message for some time that we are on the way out, that they are the natural great power of the region and that everybody should circle around Iran," said the senior American official [a code for a significant spokesmen for the government on the level of lets say Cheney] who declined to be identified because he does not customarily speak to the news media." [What pray tell does that explanation mean?]
- The report goes on: 'The American naval maneuvers are one element of a broader strategy to counter the Iranians and reassure nervous allies. It also involves the deployment of Patriot antimissile systems to Qatar and Kuwait and the dispatch of minesweeping equipment to the region."
- In yet another 'message to Iran' another unamed official said " ... We are here to stay."
- "Defense Secretary Robert Gates cautioned : 'We should have no illusions about the nature of this [Iranian] regime or about their designs for their nuclear program, their intentions for Iraq or their ambitions in the gulf region." [Of course their is no mention of our own intentions for the region].
- "With American carrier aircraft simulated attack missions in the Persian Gulf, some administration officials sought to emphasize that the exercise was not a cover for an impending air strike against Iran's nuclear facilities. Nor would the United States enter Iranian territorial waters, the officials said."
- The article concludes: " It is not a precursor to war," said one official [again unnamed] who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. [Why isn't President Bush up in arms over this anonymous 'unauthorized communication to the press?] "It is not a sign that we are building up capability in the region to attack. [I'm glad he set the record straight as I was getting a bit nervous]. Sending two aircraft carriers should be seen as a demonstration of our capability." [This I believe.]
- In a related story on Drudge this morning a headline reads: "Russian Intelligence sees U.S. military buildup on Iran border." The story goes on: "
MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russian military intelligence services are reporting a flurry of activity by U.S. Armed Forces near Iran's borders, a high-ranking security source said Tuesday.
"The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran," the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched.
He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran "that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost."
He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.
Col.-Gen. Leonid Ivashov, vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Sciences, said last week that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future."
Now add to this the elevated tensions due to the capture of the British sailors by the Iranians with both sides claiming the other is IN THE WRONG. Is this text, pre text, by one or both sides? Your guess is as good as mine.
I don't know about you but considering the disaster we have gotten ourselves into because of the botched calculations of our present leadership - the above denials of calculated aggression on our part may more properly be considered as coded messages of probable truths.
Perhaps it would be wise for us to go to war with Iran but if so shouldn't we as a nation make that determination in open debate and not leave it to our proven untrustworthy administration to drag us into an unknown, uncertain, potential expanding quagmire?

1.) On the subject of morale being low... Don't you think that soldiers are starting to realize that the premise for the war was completely unfounded? That they are fighting a fictionally based war? And... I don't know about them.. But... If I were in Iraq and I heard how many people are opposed to this war, my morale might sink just a little bit lower. No one wants to come to the realization that what they are doing is not being supported by others (while I maintain that I support the troops).
2.) You quoted an anonymous source saying something about the "designs for their nuclear program." Geez... That sounds vaguely familiar! Didn't Bush say that we had to go to the Middle East because of the threat of nuclear weapons?!?!
3.) Overall, I think what I've learned about the current administration is that they speak like it's Opposite Day. Everything they say, if you take it to mean the opposite, THEN you have the truth.
Thank you Gibbs Williams! Thank you!
"We don't need no water let the [EXPLETIVE] burn...burn [EXPLETIVE]"
I don't think that is going to happen. In fact, it is unthinkable.
At least, I hope it is.
The only person I've heard actually call what we're doing in Iraq an 'occupation' instead of calling it a 'war' is Barak Obama on CNN today. Wow! This guy isn't brainwashed! Those who insist that we're at 'war' in Iraq can't think properly what's going on there. Sadly, that includes our president.
Great article and analysis!
I've been saying for a while that the war with Iran is imminent! I hope I'm very wrong but, given the goals of this administration as demonstrated in Iraq, there is no other way to see the situation. Congress might recover their guts from the blind trust in which it has been placed!
Since we don't want to see the Iranians with nuclear capability I wonder how the Iranians like seeing us with nuclear weapons, intercontinental ballistic missiles, a huge navy, fantastic aerial capabilities parked on their doorstep, not to mention Israel with a terrific military and nuclear weapons? It would seem that their only defense might be . . . terrorism?
I remember when Gary Powers was shot down over Russia and President Eisenhower went on TV to assure the American people that Powers was not over Soviet space! It took several years for the truth to be told! Which one violated someone's naval space is up for grabs as neither side is going to tell the truth. England and Iran must get together and make every effort to work this out without the requisite blustering. And, backstage, they probably are.
I tend to think it's unlikely, given the difficulty of taking out the nuclear facilities and the probability that Russia would not give tacit approval to such a move.
However, I hope this is the last cowboy we put in the White House...
Let's see, this administration lied to get us into Iran, then lied to keep us there. What makes us think they're telling us the truth about their intentions regarding Iran?
Unless he moves more than just a couple of aircraft carriers in Iran would have a pretty good shot at making more trouble for us than we could possibly make for them. The Iranians have spent the last 10+ years developing a network of people inside Iraq. Those people are laying low right now because they don't want to get chewed up in a fight with the US. They figure we'll leave and they'll pick up the pieces. If we get into it with the Iranians, Iranian allies in Iraq could stir up enough trouble for us that our current problems would look small.
The key to analyzing what someone is likely to do is to figure out where they think their self-interest lies. It is in Bush's self-interest to keep the Iraq situation stabilized enough that the American public will put up with it until he leaves office. Then it is someone else's problem. He doesn't want the American pullout and the probable subsequent civil war and ethnic massacres to come on his watch. He almost certainly doesn't want an all-out confrontation with Iran on his watch either, because unless Iran does something extremely stupid the country will not rally around Bush, not after the years of the Iraq war. Even if Bush isn't smart enough to figure out the political and military calculus, the people around him (Rove for one) certainly are.
Now Iran's current leadership is pretty cocky. They might decide that Bush needs a lesson in who has the power in the area. I don't think so though unless their nuke program is further along than it appears to be. That nuke program would be the main target in any US/Iran brush up, so I suspect the Iranians would not want to provoke too major of a confrontation until they are pretty sure they can light off a nuke.
I've been known to be wrong, and if we see three or four aircraft carriers showing up, plus the kind of tank-heavy divisions the army would want in the area in case Iran decided to push into Iraq, then I might get worried.
When there is a crisis of trust between two or more people there is likely to be a paucity of reason where emotions runs the day not good sense. When that happens a minor miscalculation can set off a spark - lighting a fuse - leading to a conflagration. I don't wish to appear to be an alarmist but all you have to do is look at the escalating daily reports of the savagery going on in Iraq to realize that we have opened up Pandora's Box.
There is no need to project a hell after death. We are in the midst of one right here on earth.
Before we let this administration let pandora out of the Iranian Box we need to call an accounting and stop any new rash insanity from taking place in the Middle East.
This current President still has the idea that he has the "Right" to start a new war any time or anyplace that he thinks its "necessary" for our "National Defence".
All he has to do is take out key infrastructure in Iran and several small powerful strike forces, backed up by both air and sea power, and he could cause considerable havok and destroy those spread out pre-nuclear weapons plants. So we need to watch very very carefully or we will get fooled again.
Second, Iran has become the major power in the region because they no longer have to fear the Soviet Union, and they no longer have a serious rival in Iraq. They have been working for 20 years to build themselves into a serious military and industrial power. They will become a serious threat to other oil producing countries in the region, and having that region dominated by Iran, or any other single power is not in our best interest. The next president will have to deal with Iran in some way, but hopefully not in a military confrontation.
Third, at some point we will be dealing with nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran, and shortly thereafter a bunch of other countries in the region. That will almost certainly happen before the next president is done with their first term in office. It's almost inevitable. Nuclear weapons are old technology--over sixty years old. It still takes a national effort to get them, but Iran is certainly capable of it in the fairly short term. When that happens, what do Iran's rivals in the region do? The likes of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt will almost certainly get nukes too, and god knows who else.
How does the next president deal with a world where not just one or two, but half a dozen unstable countries have nukes? How do you live in a major US city when there are enough nuclear powers out there that a nuke going off in one of those cities may no longer have an identifiable return address? I don't know. I wish I did.
How does the next president handle the mess in Iraq? Open civil war appears inevitable. The Sunnis are almost certain to lose, which may bring in other Sunni countries, which in turn would bring more open Iranian involvement. Then there is the problem of the Kurds. They are essentially independent, which causes all kinds of heartburn in Iran and Turkey, both with big Kurdish minorities. How does the next president deal with the mess that happens when US troops get out? I don't know. I wish I did.
It is a Project being played out right now. It has been in the works for many years now, beginning back in the days of Reagan I believe. It is what our NeoCon 'leadership' is really all about.
This is a long term project with all of the marbles at stake … the outcome of top dog in the entire world for the foreseeable future is the prize. It is all about OIL !
It also about the Military Industrial Complex … which is about Multi-National Corporations and their goals in this world.
The M.I.C. has the wealth to buy the control that gives them the power to buy everything else … they, in a sense, are at the apex of a pyramid 'scheme' that we are not supposed to be aware of … our politicians for the most part dance to the tune that they call … they have many tactics that they use and everything is on a Need To Know Only basis … those leaders and supporters only know as much as is needed to perform their particular 'service' … War and Rumors of War are their staple … Fear creates threats and generates hatreds … and weapons are sold, used, and Manufactured to the supposed benefit of all participants … War is seen as the answer to the problems of all participants, especially those at the apex.
These people do not have the best interest of 'we the people' at heart … in fact, they have no heart.
Those in the know esoterically, would say that there is even a negative spiritual component to all of this. It is related to Biblical concepts of Armageddon and such.
In other words, It Is Written !!! BEWARE !!!
I found the article and comments very informative, and even entertaining. Having no solid political affiliation I strive to see all points of view so I can make the most intelligent decision possible and debate like this sure helps.
These words within the article describe very well my opinion of King George and his Court - ". . . totally outlandish, illogical, counter intuitve, unaffordable, and a number of other limiting terms."
It is a glaring fact that attacking Iran would be the move of an idiot. Hmmmm, I am afraid.

In a country of 70 million people the median age is 25. A huge majority of these young people think their current president is as crazy as we think Bush is...They just want freedom, and they wish their radical ruler would somehow just disappear.
It's been reported for well over a year now that we've been conducting covert ops in Iran, and we have recently been financing terrorist groups to go into Iran to try to instigate a conflict.
Do not be the least bit surprised if you come home some evening to see reports of US bombing raids in Iran. A) the neocons aren't through occupying the entire middle east yet, and with only a couple years of their reign on terror to go, I don't think for a second that they're going to let it go, after having waited their entire political careers for this opportunity, and B) the criminal bush administration has their backs fully against the wall at this moment. It appears quite likely that this attorneygate story may well be their political demise. The more information becomes known, the more it's found that they've not only been lying, but that there appears to be very good reasons why they've been lying. What better way to distract congress and the public than the distraction of another war?
Aside from those rationales, this misadministration is heavily influenced by Christian dominionists, who're literally hell bent to get armageddon under way, as quickly as possible. I don't think there's much argument that engaging Iran into conflict with the west at this time would be about all that it would take to kick of that event.
Besides, at the VERY least, just making the world nervous about possible conflict is driving the price of oil through the ceiling once again, and who in this diseased white house doesn't benefit, either directly or indirectly, from that?
Now, I am biased, but I think of my elderly father as an intelligent man. He isn't the only person I have met with this avoidance of the lie problem. What is going on? When President Clinton was impeached, I was absolutely astonished. I thought it unnecessary, but I still blushed at the behavior, thought badly of the behavior that started the firestorm.
What is it about this element in the Republican's arsenal that they have this faith in this man? How can one? To each lie, we can point and say, "It is proved." How does that man inspire this confidence? Maybe God is on his side, because this must be divine intervention.
Still, it seems more likely that a series of air campaigns will occur, rather than an all out war.
The best lessons are those actually experienced and God will see to it (believe it or not) that those needing certain lessons will surely get them.
Because I am for peace and I am confident that Spirit is aware, I have no great concerns. But I suggest that those of you that are so warlike in your support of this administration, you had better put on your prayer caps and hope it works. Many that claim religion in this matter are going to be completely surprised as to how it all turns out for them.
Like begets like, what goes around comes around, live by the sword and die by the sword, as ye sow so shall ye reap ... and of course the Golden Rule ... all applicable with Karma-Nemesis.
We think because we abhor violence and war that our enemies think the same wa.
Try to get out of this box and begin to reason that our enemies do not think this way. They have only one thought in mind and will not rest until this thought is put into horrific action. Guess what they intend to do.
Years ago we had a Paul Revere to wake us out of our complaisance. Who will do so now before millions of Americans are blasted into tiny bits or consumed by a full blown plague?
You think it's impossible. Dream on. Our enemies love your way of thinking and know that no one will stop them. This is scary

BUT the planned damage to the American political system and Social Programs will have been done. Moving the country even further into debt and closer to Privatizing of Social Services, the Infrastructures, and the Military. Oligarchy on steroids. The Neo-Cons are fanatical and care little for human life. Follow the money. Look for the Russians and Chinese to sign a Tri-Pack with Iran, to rebuild and protect, follow the money.
Now does that American Union of Canada, Mexico, and the United States take on more solid form. The world is dividing on holding resources. Can our Military do it all? Time to bring out and use all those big bad nukes???
Thanks Gibbs, you ring the thought bell. Woe be us.
I wrote a book about it ... but it will not help those who actually enjoy their fears and sense of self-righteous 'protecting' the homeland by getting their enemies over there first.
Spirit Calls ... for peace !
I read the New York Times, and listen to NPR and the BBC and scratch my head in disbelief . Oh no another political atrocity. How do they have the nerve to say that and get away with that? I don't have to spell out the particulars. Any one with a half an analytic brain and have seeing and half hearing knows exactly what I am referring to.
Yet, our President and many of his cronies continue to swagger and strut insisting that God - who ever and what ever that transcendent energy may or may not be - is exclusively on our side as if this gives them the absolute right to impose any dictatorial degreee on anyone or any people or any country they arbitrarily degree is in need of their wise reform.
I tend to reject the notion of sin as an absurdity but I am beginning to think that the representation of our present government in the world is as close to 'sinful' as any group of people could possibly be.
I think our present leadership diagnostically suffers from the Pogo problem: WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY and IT IS US? This is not to say we do not have real enemies who would be quite tickled pink to have us destroyed from without or within. But we had better get our moral act together or we will surely wither on the vine like all other governements appear to have done so sooner or later.
AMERICA! WAKE UP! and take a careful objective look at our own shortcomings while at the same time keep firm boundaries against our enemies.
DEBKAfile Exclusive: US financial sources in Bahrain report American investors in Bahrain advised to pack up business operations and leave
March 30, 2007, 10:53 PM (GMT+02:00)
USS Nimitz nuclear carrier
The advice came from officers with US Central Command 5th Fleet HQ at Manama, who spoke of security tension, a hint at an approaching war with Iran. Arab sources report the positioning of a Patriot anti-missile battery in Bahrain this week; they say occupancy at emirate hotels has soared past 90% due mostly to the influx of US military personnel.
The USS Nimitz and its support ships will be departing San Diego Monday, April 2, to join the John C. Stennis Strike Group in the Persian Gulf. The nuclear carrier is due to relieve the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower .
Bluff or for real?
I'm with you on the total loss of America's ethical and moral compass! We cannot stoop to the level of the "enemy" or we become him. Our nation was founded on and must retain to survive, certain rights and liberties. It is the reason for our existence and if we give them up that is no different than having them taken from us!
Too many of us tend to forget that such things as Habeas Corpus rights are not there to protect the guilty, they are there to protect the accused which can be anyone regardless of what they have done. Witness the number of persons accused and convicted of rape and murder who have been since exonerated by DNA evidence! Anyone can be accused and whiteout those "rights" your chance of proving your innocents is quite Herculean!
the only valid reason for convicting anyone of anything is not because they look bad, have the wrong political outlook, are from an undesirable group or have a second rate defense. These are not valid reasons! The only valid reason is because you are guilty and if you don't have these rights that may well not be the reason for a conviction or even just being held indefinitely without being charged!

'US ready to strike Iran on Good Friday'
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF AND AP
Talkbacks for this article: 161
The United States will be ready to launch a missile attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as soon as early this month, perhaps "from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. on April 6," according to reports in the Russian media on Saturday.
According to Russian intelligence sources, the reports said, the US has devised a plan to attack several targets in Iran, and an assault could be carried out by launching missiles from fighter jets and warships stationed in the Persian Gulf.
Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted a security official as saying, "Russian intelligence has information that the US Armed Forces stationed in the Persian Gulf have nearly completed preparations for a missile strike against Iranian territory."
Are we prepared to? Yes. Will we on April 6th attack? No way in hell! If I'm wrong I'll feel pretty stupid on April 7th but that will mean that we have people in positions of power and authority who are a lot more stupid than I!
We might just as well go ahead and attack China, Russia or both!
It's a long way from a single story in a Russian newspaper to a planned action by the United States Government! I still think it's an April Fools joke!
A missile strike on Iran should and would be the last straw ! ! !
It should be a double header because we don't dare leave that war mongering Vice President in power if we take out the idiot we call President. It's far past the time that the US Congress should legally reign in the out of control President and his Cronies.
Israeli military intelligence chief predicts Iran-Hizballah-Syria attack on Israel in summer
April 2, 2007, 12:56 PM (GMT+02:00)
In his briefing to the Israeli cabinet Sunday, April 1, Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin, AMAN chief, reported that Iran, Syria, Hizballah and Hamas expect the United States to attack Iran in the summer and they are preparing to retaliate by going to war with Israel. In Yadlin's view, a proliferation of players and the many imponderables could ignite a conflict, which none of the parties wants – as happened in the Six Day War
1967.
